  • In examining particulate deposits in the pipes of a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system, vibration diagnostics is compared and studied against ultrasonic diagnostics, The latter method involves pulsing the outer wall of pipes with an ultrasonic sensor and analyzing the resulting echo to observe particulate deposits inside pipes. Vibration diagnostics examines the existence of particulate deposits by analyzing the difference in the frequencies generated when a vibrator is adhered to the outer wall of pipes. With ultrasonic diagnostics, good test results were obtained only when particulate deposits were attached to the inner wall of the pipes, After some time, however, particulate deposits were not detected properly, as the ultrasonic wave failed to cross the fine gaps created between the inner wall of the pipe and the deposits. The ultrasonic wave bounced back because of the dried particulate deposits on the wall. Thus, it has been proven that the ultrasonic diagnostics is not an appropriate means of examining the particulate deposits in a vacuum, On the other hand, vibration diagnostics succeeded in detecting the particulate deposits regardless of the lapsed time. In conclusion, the vibration diagnostics is being expected as the effective method in monitoring the particulate deposits inside pipes in the CVD system where the desired behavior is reduced frequency along with the particulate deposits in comparison to the case where the pipe is clean.

  • Due to the stronger exhaust emission regulations and the introduction of advanced technology in Diesel engine, the specific Diesel particulate matters have decreased by about one order of magnitude since the 1980's. In recent years, particle number emissions rather than particulate mass emissions have become the subject of controversial discussions. Recent results from health studies imply that it is possible that particulate mass does not properly correlated with the variety of health effects attributed to Diesel exhaust. Concern is instead now focusing on nano-sized particles. This study has been performed for the better understanding about the Diesel nano-particle measurement and size distribution characteristics in the exhaust system of a turbo charged Diesel engine. A scanning mobility particle sizer(SMPS) system was applied to measure the particle number and size concentration of Diesel exhaust particles. As the experimental results, the number concentrations in the particle size (Dp<200 nm) were very sensitive to dilution conditions. Specially the changes in nano-particle number concentrations(Dp<50 nm) increased along the downstream of exhaust flow. Also we found the dilution conditions were influencing the condensation of SOF and $H_2O$ during dilution and cooling of hot exhaust.

  • There are many pollutants in the residential space due to building materials, ventilation, cooking, etc. Among them, particulate matter is a primary carcinogen and very harmfull to the human body, it occurs mostly in cooking. Therefore, in order to manage the indoor air quality well, it is necessary to evaluate the relationship between the concentration of particulate matter generated during cooking and ventilation method. In this study, we propose a management method and particulate matte which occurs during the kitchen cooking by measuring and analyzing the concenteation change of particulate matter(PM2.5) according to the type of food and the ventilation method.

  • This study analyzes the need for appropriate response education in schools for national health and sustainable development education in connection with particulate matter, which has recently emerged as a serious environmental and social problem. The survey was conducted on 1,200 teenagers(middle and high school students) in North Jeolla Province. The results of the study are as follows. First, the survey results were generally low in terms of environmental attitude and response(actuality) as well as the level of knowledge of particulate matter. Second, particulate matter-related education is rarely conducted at school sites; therefore, it is also necessary to develop an environmental education programs that can be a significant educational experience along with a specific educational orientation that is required to ensure the achievement of sustainable residential environment education. Finally, we hope that this study will help raise awareness on sustainable residential environment education amid difficulties in accessibility. Issues that need further study include: the absence of education materials, environmental education related to particulate matter, and guidance on how to maintain healthy living for individuals that help increase interest in a sustainable living environment for future generations.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to review the effects of herbal medicine on respiratory diseases induced by the treatment of particulate matter in in vivo animal models. Methods: Literature searches were performed in seven databases (Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, KISS, KTKP, OASIS, and ScienceON). After the searched studies were screened based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria, the publication date, origin, used animals, induction of particulate matter models, herbal medicine used for intervention, study design, outcome measure, and results of studies were analyzed. Results: Among a total of 972 studies primarily searched, 34 studies were finally included in our study. Of this number, 29 studies induced animal models by using only particulate matter, and 5 studies induced animal models with respiratory diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, by using particulate matter and other materials. In the selected studies, the treatments of herbal medicine in particulate matter models suppressed oxidative stress and inflammation in lung tissue, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and blood as well as lung injury in histological analysis. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that herbal medicine is effective in treating respiratory diseases induced by particulate matter. These results are also expected to be useful data for designing further studies. However, more systematically designed in vivo studies related to particulate matter are needed.

  • The milling and particulate characteristics of Al alloy-$Al_2O_3$ powder mixtures for a reaction-bonded $Al_2O_3$ (RBAO) process were studied. A commercially available prealloyed Al powder with Zn, Mg, Cu and Cr alloying elements (7475 series) was mixed with a calcined sinter-active $Al_2O_3$ powder and then milled in centrifugal milling equipment for ~48 hrs. The Al alloy-$Al_2O_3$ powder mixtures after milling were characterized and evaluated in various ways to reveal their particulate characteristics during milling. The milling efficiency of the Al alloy increased with a longer milling time. Comminution of the Al alloy particles started with its elongation, showing a high aspect ratio. With a longer milling time, the elongated Al alloy particle changed in terms of its shape and size, becoming equiaxially fine particles. Regardless of the milling efficiency of the Al alloy particles, all of the Al alloy particles repeatedly experienced strong plastic deformation during milling, giving rise to higher density of surface defects, such as microcracks, and leading to higher residual microstress within the Al alloy particles. The chemical reactions, oxidation behavior and hydration behavior of the Al alloy particles and the hydrolysis characteristics of their reaction with the environment were also observed during the milling process and during the subsequent powder handling steps.

  • As air pollution continues to increase owing to increasing traffic centered in urban areas, the tire industry is researching methods to reduce particulate matter. In this study, functionalized lithium butadiene rubber (F-LiBR) was applied to a natural rubber (NR)/butadiene rubber (BR) blend compound often used in truck bus radial (TBR) tire treads. The effect of the functional group that can react with carbon black (CB) in BR was investigated in terms of the dispersion of CB and the compound performance, including the generation of particulate matter. Compounds that were substituted with F-LiBR exhibited enhanced interaction with CB, resulting in excellent filler dispersion. Although F-LiBR exhibited lower crosslinking density and inferior abrasion resistance due to its high vinyl content, the compound with 30 phr of F-LiBR was advantageous in terms of its rolling resistance due to the excellent filler dispersion, which was also effective in reducing the amount of generated particulate matter (up to 56% reduction for PM2.5, and 67% reduction for PM10). The results confirmed the benefits of the introduction of functional groups into TBR tire tread compounds, which can aid in improving the fuel efficiency and reducing particulate matter generation.

  • Fine dust has become a significant social problem. Diesel engines are used as the main propulsion power source in ships. This study introduces a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that is used as an exhaust after-treatment system for diesel engines to reduce particulate matter known as diesel fine dust. Two materials are used for the DPF: Cordierite and silicon carbide (SiC). In this study, to improve the physical properties of the binder used in the SiC DPF, cordialite was used instead of the SiC-based materials used as the conventional binder to evaluate the thermal durability against high-temperature deformation through the change of the coefficient of thermal expansion. In addition, the physical properties of the silica sol, as a main component of the base coating solution for determining the bond between the binder and the segment, were confirmed. Based on this, the change effect of the binder physical properties was confirmed through experiments by either adding a silane coupling agent or SiC to increase the reactivity of the silica sol.
