건설자재 미세먼지 제거율 평가를 위한 선형 회귀 분석법 제안 (Linear Regression Analysis to Evaluate the Particulate Matter Removal Rate of Functional Construction Materials)

  • 미세먼지를 제거하기 위하여 미세먼지 제거 기능성 건설자재가 개발되고 있다. 그러나 미세먼지 제거율 평가 방법 및 기반 시설은 국내에 전무한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 입자상 미세먼지 제거 성능을 평가하기 위해 미세먼지 제거율 시험 챔버를 구축하고 입자상 미세먼지 제거율 평가 방법을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 결과적으로 건설자재는 미세먼지가 발생하는 환경에서 유효성을 가지기 때문에, 시험 입자 주입 단계 구간를 비교 대상으로 제안하였다. 미세먼지 주입 단계에서 측정한 모든 질량농도값에서 선형 회귀 분석으로 얻어진 기울기값을 상대 비교함으로써 미세먼지 제거율 평가를 제안하였다. 본 방법은 모든 측정값을 대상으로 하고 측정값 변동성에 대한 평가를 결정계수(R2)로 평가할 수 있어서 미세먼지 제거율 결과값의 신뢰성을 확보할 수 있다.

Smart geophysical characterization of particulate materials in a laboratory

  • Elastic and electromagnetic waves can be used to gather important information about particulate materials. To facilitate smart geophysical characterization of particulate materials, their fundamental properties are discussed and experimental procedures are presented for both elastic and electromagnetic waves. The first application is related to the characterization of particulate materials using shear waves, concentrating on changes in effective stress during consolidation, multi-phase phenomena with relation to capillarity, and microscale characteristics of particles. The second application involves electromagnetic waves, focusing on stratigraphy detection in layered soils, estimation of void ratio and its spatial distribution, and conduction in unsaturated soils. Experimental results suggest that shear waves allow studying particle contact phenomena and the evolution of interparticle forces, while electromagnetic waves give insight into the characteristics of the fluid phase and its spatial distribution.

Recycling of Aluminum Alloy from Al-Cu Metal Matrix Composite Reinforced with SiC Particulates

  • In this study, we investigate the recycling of aluminum-based metal matrix composites(AMCs) embedded with SiC particulates. The microstructure of the AMCs is characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The possibility of recycling the composite scrap is attempted from the melted alloy and SiC particulates by re-melting, holding and solidification in crucibles. The recovery percentage of the matrix alloy is calculated after a number of holding times, 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes and for different particulate sizes and weight fractions in the Al matrix. The results show that the recovery percentage of the matrix alloy, as well as the time required for maximum recovery of the matrix, is dependent on the size and weight fraction of SiC particulates. In addition, the percentage recovery increases with particulate size but drops with the particulate fraction in the matrix. The time to reach maximum recovery falls rapidly with an increase in particulate size and fraction.

선박 디젤엔진 배출 미세먼지 저감을 위한 정전 여과 매연 집진기 개발에 관한 연구 (An Electrostatic Diesel Particulate Filtration System for Removal of Fine Particulate Matters from Marine Diesel Engines)

  • In order to reduce particulate matters (PM) from marine diesel engines, we developed novel electrostatic diesel particulate matter filtration system. Electrostatic diesel particulate filtration (DPF) system consists of electrostatic charger and filtration part. The electrostatic charger and filtration part are composed of a metal discharge electrode and a metal fiber filter (porosity: 68.1-86.1%), respectively. In the electrostatic charger part, diesel soot particles are reduced by electrostatic force. The filtration part after electrostatic charger part reduces diesel soot particles through inertial and diffusion forces. The filtration efficiency of electrostatic DPF system was examined through the experiments using engine dynamometer system (300 kW) and ship (200 kW). The PM reduction efficiencies due to inertial and electrostatic forces showed about 70-75% and 80-90%, respectively, according to the RPM of the engine. The differential pressure of the electrostatic DPF system applied to the ship was about 1-9 mbar, which was less than the allowable differential pressure for ship engines in South Korea (100 mbar). The results show that the electrostatic DPF system is suitable for application to the PM reduction emitted from ships.

건축재료 연소생성물에 포함된 입자상 물질의 위험성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Risk of Particulate Materials Included in the Combustion Products of Building Materials)

  • 본 연구에서는 입자상 물질의 유해성을 포함하는 연소생성물 독성평가 기법의 개발을 위한 선행 연구로써, 입자상 물질의 위험성을 확인하기 위한 실험을 수행하였다. 실험은 동일 시료의 가스유해성 시험을 통하여 교반상자와 피검상자 사이 Membrane 필터 설치 유무에 따른 평균행동정지시간의 변화를 분석함으로써, 연소생성물 중 입자상 물질을 필터링하여 노출시킨 경우와 입자상 물질을 포함한 연소생성물을 노출시킨 경우의 시험 결과를 비교 분석하였다. 시험결과 필터 장착 시 실험용 쥐의 평균행동 정지시간이 목재 시료의 경우 최대 264% 증가하였으며, 우레탄 시료의 경우 최대 179% 증가함을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 입자상 물질의 유해성 및 이에 대한 정량적 독성평가의 필요성을 확인하였다.

초등학교 과학 수업에 적용한 입자 모델의 컴퓨터 애니메이션 교수자료의 학습 효과 (The Learning Effect of Teaching Materials Using Computer Animation of Particulate Model in Elementary School Science Classes)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of computer animations using particulate model in elementary science classes related to air pressure. To do those, four classes of 5th grade in an elementary school located in a city were selected. As an experiment group, two classes were applied the teaching materials of computer animations developed for this study based on particulate model. The other classes as a control group were not applied these materials in science classes. The total scores of experiment group in which computer animation using particulate model was applied in science classes are higher than those of the control group in the conception test. Only in one conception related to high and low atmospheric air pressure, the scores of the two groups are not significantly different at 0.05 significance level.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the modular multimedia instructional materials emphasizing the particulate nature on the realm of matter in elementary science classes. Features of the material are as follows: 1 To be in focus on particulate model named 'phenomenal magnifying glasses' in order to change the student's belief system of continuous matter into the belief system of particulate matter . The 'phenomenal magnifying glasses' is a new instructional strategy designed to change into the view of particulate matter through facilitating the reflective thinking resulted from the simultaneous consideration of experimental phenomena(macroscopic world) and particulate model(microscopic world). 2. To introduce modular system into the instructional materials, which was consisted of 14 subunits according to the sequential instruction unit of 'molecule and molecular motion'. Each subunit was composed of 5 types of modules(module 1: motivation, module 2: experimental result, module 3: discussion, module 4: phenomenal magnifying glasses, module 5: related experiment) 3. The multimedia program was composed of 36 kinds of experimental animation and 59 kinds of computer animation materials combined with text resources, photographic materials and sounds.

  • The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the air-side particulate fouling materials in finned-tube heat exchangers of air conditioners. Air conditioners being used in the field such as inns, restaurants, and offices are collected in chronological order in use. Typical fouling materials on the heat exchangers include fibers and dusts ranged from 6.6 to 20.9 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in mass median diameter.

Ceramic Diesel Particulate Filter Structure with Inclined Gas Paths

  • This paper presents a novel structure for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with inclined gas paths, which was designed so that the gas paths offered a fluent flow of exhaust gases, and particulate matter (PM) was collected at pores formed in the body. The alumina porous filter was prepared by a conventional sintering process at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Straight gas paths with $30^{\circ}$ of inclination from the gas flow direction were formed in the filter body. It is shown that this filter structure worked as a PM filter, in which 90.2% of soot filtration efficiency and 59.6 mbar of pressure drop were achieved.
