Under-fired charbroiling cooking processes are known as important contributors of particulate matter (PM). In this study, we characterized the emission of particulate matters from under-fired charbroiling cooking processes using the hood method. Accumulated mass concentration of $PM_{10}$ was 92.2~99.5% and particle size of 2.0~2.5 ${\mu}m$ was highest. The concentration of PM increased very sharply at the beginning of charbroiling meats and then gradually decreased as the charbroiling continued. PM concentration also increased very sharply when gravy from meat spilled onto the frame of fire. However, mass concentration during charbroiling using only charcoals was very low compared to that of meats. We estimated the emission factors of charcoal, pork belly and pork shoulder respectively; 0.01~0.02 g/kg, 5.02~6.26 g/kg, 2.86~4.15 g/kg of $PM_{2.5}$, 0.01~0.03 g/kg, 7.44~7.91 g/kg, 4.54~5.56 g/kg of $PM_{10}$, and 0.02~0.05 g/kg, 7.59~7.95 g/kg, 4.93~5.68 g/kg of TSP. The emission factors of charcoal were negligible and the emission factors of pork belly were higher than that of pork shoulder. Emission rates of particulate matters from under-fired charbroiling cooking process were estimated as 578,009~1,265,152 kg/yr of $PM_{2.5}$, 917,539~1,598,619 kg/yr of $PM_{10}$ and 996.358~1,606,703 kg/yr of TSP. But emission factors should be verified with an in-stack cascade impactor because the reported method involves some assumptions.
In this study, the characteristics of particulate matters (PM) from diesel and biodiesel fuel combustion was experimentally investigated. The experiment was performed in a single cylinder common-rail compression ignition engine. The fuels were injected at -5 CAD (Crank angle degree) ATDC (After top dead center) with 80 MPa injection pressure. Size distribution of PM was measured by scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and morphology of PM was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). PM from biodiesel shows lower emission level and smaller primary particles.

A total of 318 particulate sample sets consisting of both fine PM(FPM : dp$\leq$2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and coarse PM(CPM : 2.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) was collected by a dichotomous sampler in Suwon area from December 1996 to November 1997. The concentration of seven inorganic elements such as pb. Cr, Cd, Cu, Zn Fe and Na were determined from each sample using an AAS. The purpose of the study was to extensively investigate environmental behaviors of particulate matters and to provide air quality management schemes applying various statistical approaches. The mean concentrations of PM10 Results of correlation analyses indicated the existence of strong correlations among inorganic elements PM10 FPM CPM and various meterological variables. Our study also examined the degree of uncertainties whether the particular elements can be assorted into the accumulation mode or the coarse mode in their size distribution. Furthermore the analysis of the pollution rose showed graphically the direction of potential sources of particulate matters. According to statistical analyses of our data quantitative differences appeared in the pollution patterns between weekdays and weekends.
Water vapor has received worldwide large attention due to its broad technological implications ranged from resource production and environmental remediation. Especially, one of the typical areas where the water vapor is important is the removal of PM (particulate matter) which causes a critical hazard to human health. However, most vapor-based PM removal methods are limited in removing PM2.5 by using relatively large water droplets and consume large energy. Here, we propose a superhydrophilic thermally-insulated macroporous membrane to generate steam flow. The water vapor directly captures PM with steam flow and hygroscopic characteristic of PM. The steam, the cluster of water vapor, from the membrane gives rise to high removal efficiencies compared to those of the control case without light illumination. To reveal PM removal mechanism, the steam flow and PM were quantitatively analyzed using PIV measurement. The proposed steam generator could be utilized as an economical and ecofriendly platform for effective PM removal at a fairly low cost in a sustainable, energy-free, and harmless-to-human manner.
Over recent years, high-concentration of particulate matters (e.g., a.k.a. fine dust) in South Korea has increasingly evoked considerable concerns about public health. It is intractable to track and report $PM_{10}$ measurements to the public on a real-time basis. Even worse, such records merely amount to averaged particulate concentration at particular regions. Under this circumstance, people are prone to being at risk at rapidly dispersing air pollution. To address this challenge, we attempt to build a predictive model via deep learning to the concentration of particulates ($PM_{10}$). The proposed method learns a binary decision rule on the basis of video sequences to predict whether the level of particulates ($PM_{10}$) in real time is harmful (>$80{\mu}g/m^3$) or not. To our best knowledge, no vision-based $PM_{10}$ measurement method has been proposed in atmosphere research. In experimental studies, the proposed model is found to outperform other existing algorithms in virtue of convolutional deep learning networks. In this regard, we suppose this vision based-predictive model has lucrative potentials to handle with upcoming challenges related to particulate measurement.

Recently, the nano-PM's number concentration emitted by diesel internal combustion engine has focused on attention because this particulate matters are suspected being hazardous of human health. In this study, The nano-PM mass and size of diesel passenger vehicles were measured on chassis dynamometer test bench. The particulate matters(PM) emissions of these vehicles were investigated by number concentration too. A condensation particle counter(CPC) system was applied to measure the particle number and size concentration of diesel exhaust particles at the end of dilution tunnel along the NEDC(ECE15+EUDC) and CVS-75 vehicle test mode. As the research result, the characteristic of vehicle test mode on the diesel nano-particle number and size distribution was investigated in this study.
The characteristics of particulate matters (PM) from an exhaust gas for conventional and low temperature diesel combustion (LTC) in a compression ignition engine was experimentally investigated by the elemental, thermogravimetric analysis. Morphology of PM was also studied by the transmission electron microscopy. PM for LTC shows that it contains more volatile hydrocarbons, which can be easily evaporated than conventional regime. PM for LTC is comprised of smaller primary particles.
This paper is to investigate the characteristics of exhaust emissions and nano-particle emission from diesel passenger vehicle according to using biodiesel fuel as an alternative fuel. In this work, the particulate matters (PM) of exhaust emissions in diesel engine were investigated by number of particles and mass measurement. The mass of the total PM was measured using the standard gravimetric measurement method, the total number concentrations were measured on a ECE15+EUDC driving cycle using Condensation Particle Counter (CPC). Total PM emission was reduced $2{\sim}38%$ and number concentration was reduced $1{\sim}27%$ according to increasing blended ratio of biodiesel with diesel fuel. Total PM emission was reduced more than particle number emission because volatile particles were measured in total PM but were not measured in particle number emissions.

The annular denuder system(ADS) was used to determine characteristics of acidic air pollutants and $PM_{2.5}$ species in Seoul-metropolitan areas. All measurements were done simultaneously in downtown(Kwanghwamun, Mullae, Chamshil, Ssangmun dongs) and outskirts(Puch n, Kuri cities) during four seasons. The samples were analyzed using ion chromatography for gas-phase matters(HCl, $HNO_2$, $HNO_3$ and $SO^2$) and particulate phase matters($Cl^-$, $NO^{2-}$, $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, $Na^+$, $NH_4^-$ and $Ca^{2+}$) and was measured fine particles($PM_{2.5}$). The seasonal mean concentrations of HCl, HNO2, HNO3 and SO2 in downtown and outskirt areas were very similar. All chemical species monitored from this study showed seasonal variations. Nitric acid(HNO3) and Nitrous acid(HNO2) were showed higher concentrations during the summer. $PM_{2.5}$, $SO_4^{2-}$, $NH_4^-$, $NO_3^-$ and $Cl^-$ in the particulate phase matters were higher levels during the winter months. The concentrations of these components were 54.8, 3.82, 2.49, 1.80 and 1.02$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively.
Background and objective: Illegal open-air incineration, which is criticized as a leading source of air pollutants among agricultural activities, currently requires constant effort and attention. Countries around the world have been undertaking studies on the emission of heavy metal substances in fine dust discharged during the incineration process. A precise analytical method is required to examine the harmful effects of particulate pollutants on the human body. Methods: In order to simulate open-air incineration, the infrastructure needed for incineration tests complying with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 5G was built, and a large-area analysis was conducted on particulate pollutants through automated scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). For the test specimen, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waste collected by the DangJin Office located in Choongcheongnam-do was used. To increase the identifiability of the analyzed particles, the incineration experiment was conducted in an incinerator three times after dividing the film waste into 200 g specimens. Results: Among the metal particulate matters detected in the HDPE waste incineration test, transition metals included C (20.8-37.1 wt%) and O (33.7-37.9 wt%). As for other chemical matters, the analysis showed that metal particulate matters such as metalloids, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and transition metals reacted to C and C-O. Si, a representative metalloid, was detected at 14.8-20.8 wt%, showing the highest weight ratio except for C and O. Conclusion: In this study, the detection of metal chemicals in incinerated particulate matters was effectively confirmed through SEM-EDS. The results of this study verified that HDPE waste adsorbs metal chemicals originating from soil due to its own properties and deterioration, and that when incinerated, it emits particulate matters containing transition metals and other metals that contribute to the excessive production and reduction of reactive oxygen species.
