  • The purpose of this paper is to propose an automatic evaluation technique for the prosodic aspect of an English sentence uttered by Korean speakers learning English. The underlying hypothesis is that the consistency of the manual prosody scoring is reflected in an imaginary space of prosody evaluation model constructed out of the three physical properties of the prosody considered in this paper, namely: the fundamental frequency (F0) contour, the intensity contour, and the segmental durations. The evaluation proceeds first by building a prosody evaluation model for the sentence. For the creation of the model, utterances from native speakers of English and Korean learners for the target sentence are manually scored by either native teachers of English or Korean phoneticians in terms of their prosody. Multiple native utterances from the manual scoring are selected as the "model" native utterances against which all the other Korean learners' utterances as well as the model utterances themselves can be semi-automatically evaluated by comparison in terms of the three prosodic aspects [7]. Each learner utterance, when compared to the multiple model native utterances, produces multiple coordinates in a three-dimensional space of prosody evaluation, each axis of which corresponds to the three prosodic aspects. The 3D coordinates from all the comparisons form a prosody evaluation model for the particular sentence and the associated manual scores can display regions of particular scores. The model can then be used as a predictive model against which other Korean utterances of the target sentence can be evaluated. The model from a Korean phonetician appears to support the hypothesis.

  • Two rational formulae depicting the relationships between sludge ages and recycle flow rates have been developed to determine sludge wasting volumes at a particular sludge age. A sensitivity analysis shows that the recycle ratio is the most important variable to be measured as accurately as possible in determining the sludge wasting volume to maintain a particular sludge age when the system is controlled by wasting recycled sludge. On the other hand, the final clarifier solids capturing capacity is the most important variable to be measured when the system is operated by wasting mixed liquor.

  • This paper presents an advanced computational method for the prediction of the responses in the frequency domain of general linear dissipative structural-acoustic and fluid-structure systems, in the low-and medium-frequency domains and this includes uncertainty quantification. The system under consideration is constituted of a deformable dissipative structure that is coupled with an internal dissipative acoustic fluid. This includes wall acoustic impedances and it is surrounded by an infinite acoustic fluid. The system is submitted to given internal and external acoustic sources and to the prescribed mechanical forces. An efficient reduced-order computational model is constructed by using a finite element discretization for the structure and an internal acoustic fluid. The external acoustic fluid is treated by using an appropriate boundary element method in the frequency domain. All the required modeling aspects for the analysis of the medium-frequency domain have been introduced namely, a viscoelastic behavior for the structure, an appropriate dissipative model for the internal acoustic fluid that includes wall acoustic impedance and a model of uncertainty in particular for the modeling errors. This advanced computational formulation, corresponding to new extensions and complements with respect to the state-of-the-art are well adapted for the development of a new generation of software, in particular for parallel computers.

  • In general, a classification process between ground data and non-ground data, which include building objects, is required prior to producing a DEM for a certain surface reconstruction from LiDAR data in which the DEM can be produced from the ground data, and certain objects like buildings can be reconstructed using non-ground data. Thus, an exact classification between ground and non-ground data from LiDAR data is the most important factor in the ground reconstruction process using LiDAR data. In particular, building objects can be largely used as digital maps, orthophotos, and urban planning regarding the object in the ground and become an essential to providing three dimensional information for certain urban areas. In this study, an entropy theory, which has been used as a standard of disorder or uncertainty for data used in the information theory, is used to apply a more objective and generalized method in the recognition and segmentation of buildings from raw LiDAR data. In particular, a method that directly uses the raw LiDAR data, which is a type of point shape vector data, without any changes, to a type of normal lattices was proposed, and the existing algorithm that segments LiDAR data into ground and non-ground data as a binarization manner was improved. In addition, this study proposes a generalized building extraction method that excludes precedent information for buildings and topographies and subsidiary materials, which have different data sources.

  • VaR is now widely used as an important tool to evaluate and manage financial risks. In particular, it is important to select an appropriate volatility model for the rate of return of financial assets. In this study, both univariate and multivariate models are considered to evaluate VaR of the portfolio composed of KOSPI, Hang-Seng, Nikkei indexes, and their performances are compared through back testing techniques. Overall, multivariate models are shown to be more appropriate than univariate models to estimate the portfolio VaR, in particular DCC and ADCC models are shown to be more superior than others.

  • Since the introduction of a new field of skin care to Korean market which was developed in 1980, a variety of skin care therapies have appeared in mid-1990s. Therefore, in particular, it is considered that aroma therapy is one of the most preferred methods for skin care. Therefore, previous studies focused just on clinical effects of aromatherapy while this study focuses on aestheticians by identifying whether performance of aromatherapy, and their contribution to income will influence on satisfaction in aestheticians and customers' intention to reuse aromatherapy service for positive demonstration. The results of the study are presented as follows: First, it is demonstrated that side-effect of aromatherapy, contribution to income, and customer satisfaction have significant effect on professional aestheticians. In particular, in respect to the aestheticians, this study obtains the results rather different from the estimation that customers are satisfied with the professional service though they have side-effect. Second, as the satisfaction in professional aestheticians after skin care service is a significant factor that influences on intention to reuse it, this study concludes that re-management on behaviors is required according to the degrees of satisfaction.

  • Green tea is of particular source as it has been found to have strong antioxidant activities. The extracts of green tea during the commercial harvest seasons from April, 2003 to August, 2003 were compared. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between the polyphenol content of green teas and its antioxidant activities. The con-tent of total polyphenols was analyzed and several antioxidant testings were performed. The levels of total polyphenols were higher in the green teas (e.g. Woojeon, Sejak) harvested during very early spring and lower in the green teas harvested late(eg. Ipha, Yepcha). In particular, the free radical scavenging, the inhibition of LDL oxidation, the cytoprotective effect and the inhibition of DNA damage were correlated with the total polyphenol contents of green tea extracts harvested early spring such as Woojeon, Sejak and Jungjak. The results obtained here show that all extracts of green teas including purified green tea catechin, GTC, have strong antioxidant activities on oxidative stress in vifrθ. The variation in polyphenol content and antioxidant activities among various types of green tea by the harvesting time may provide critical information for investigators and consumers using tea in purposes of nutrition and chemoprevention.

  • This study mainly aims to address the housing requirements of senior citizens through meeting their basic needs for physical housing while valuing the particular human needs and demands of older people. As the number and frequency of their social ties decrease, senior citizens spend most of their time at home. As a result, they suffer a larger number of accidents in the home. Although carelessness is a cause, the main reason for seniors household accidents is that the general structure, fixtures and appliances of housing do not take into account the particular needs of older people. This study investigates the accident patterns of older people, addresses structural obstructions, and proposes guidelines for ergonomic interior design and household management which take into account universal design and the special needs of senior citizens. This study explores the following: 1) Accident causes and patterns in senior households, as the specific characteristics, requirements of older people. 2) An analysis of safety improvement plans and application. 3) Determining each rooms layout by functional requirement. 4) A final set of proposed interior design guidelines for senior housing.
