  • In CO2 laser surface machining of plastic films in modern display manufacturing, scattering of fume particles could be a major source of well-recognized film surface contamination. This computational fluid dynamics research investigates the suction air flow patterns over a film surface as well as the dispersion of micron-sized fume particles with low-Reynolds number particle drag model. The numerical results show the recirculatory flow patterns near laser machining point on film surface and also over the surface of vertical suction slot, which may hinder the efficient removal of fume particles from film surface. The dispersion characteristics of fume particles with various particle size have been tested systematically under different levels of suction flow intensity. It is found that suction removal efficiency of fume particles heavily depends on the particle size in highly nonlinear manners and a higher degree of suction does not always results in more efficient particle removal.

  • A facile and effective approach has been developed to prepare hybrid hollow microspheres, via consecutive processes of pickering mini-emulsion polymerization for core-shell formation, and calcination of the sacrificial core. The resulting hollow composite particles have mono-layered shells. The morphology and size characteristics of synthesized composite particles were investigated, using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements.

  • The force exerted on particles when the momentum of light is changed at the boundary is used in accelerating particles in the fluid. So far, particles are accelerated by the gaussian beam focused by lenses or microscopic objectives. In this paper, particles arc moved by the light diffracted from the fiber end. And we proposed the possibility of particle acceleration using the fiber end.

  • Particulate matter smaller than $10{\mu}textrm{m}$ in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) is known as thoracic particles that are capable of reaching the thoracic region of humans. PM10 is further divided into two size ranges, which are fine particles (nuclei mode plus accumulation mode) and coarse particles, based on different sources and chemical composition. Fine particles can penetrate deep into the alveolar region of the human lungs, while coarse particles be deposited in the upper respiratory system. (omitted)

  • Flying and solidification behaviors of the particles manufactured by centrifugal atomization were investigated. Both models were solved by the explicit FDM. Flying calculation supported the experimental results that the finer particles flied shorter than coarser particles and that particles flied shorter for lower rotation velocity than for higher velocity. Cooling curve and dendrite arm spacing were predicted by use of heat transfer analysis.

  • Nano particles-containing CMS membranes were prepared by pyrolysis of polyimides dispersed uniformly with precursors and their gas separation performances were examined, to elucidate the permeation mechanism and to further improve the gas separation performance. Consequently, it was suggested that the separation performance could be controlled by doping nano-particles in the CMS membranes, and that optimization of various factors, such as the size, content, and dispersion state of the nano particles would contribute for further improvement of the gas separation performance.

  • The present study was undertaken to evaluate the chemical characteristics of Asian dust (hereafter called "AD") particles with the aid of the most advanced micro-PIXE (Particle-induced X-ray emission) analytical technique. To this end, size-selected particles were sampled on a rural peninsula of Korea (Byunsan, 35.37N; 126.27E) during AD and non-AD periods in 2004. The coarse particle (> $2{\mu}m$) number density during an AD event were 170 times higher than those of the non-AD counterpart. The average net-count of silica in individual particles collected on AD event was roughly 11 times higher than that of non-AD counterpart. The X-ray net-counts of trace elements (Zn, Co, Mn, and V) were also considerably high in AD relative to the non-AD day. Particle classification based on the inter ratio analysis of elemental net-count suggests that a large portion of the coarse particles collected during AD event underwent chemical transformation to a certain degree. The visual interpretation of micro-PIXE elemental maps and elemental localization data in and/or on individual AD particles clarified the internal mixture of AD particles with sea-salt and artificial metallic particles.

  • Oxygen sensitive functional particles(OSParticle) were fabricated by three different methods for using the particles as oxygen sensors and PIV tracers. The used methods were a physical coating method, an ion-exchange method and a dispersion polymerization method. The physical coating method is dipping $SiO_2$ hollow particles into dye solution then drying. This method is very simple, but particles are not uniform in diameter and luminescence. The particles fabricated by the ion-exchange method have very uniform diameter and well doped. However, it can not be used in water since the particles are hydrophobic. In case of the dispersion polymerization method, the diameter of OSParticles is quite uniform. The diameter of OSParticles can be changed by controlling the quantity of AIBN (2,2'-azobis isobutyronitrile). For the purpose of dissolved oxygen concentration measurement in micro scale water flows, the dispersion polymerized OSParticles turn out to be the most superior functional particles. The luminescent intensity of OSParticles was tested with the variation of dissolved oxygen concentration in water samples. As a result, the luminescent intensity of OSParticles is monotonically decreased with increasing DO (Dissolved oxygen) concentration of water.

  • Sensing characteristics for porous smart particle based on DBR smart particles were reported. Optically encoded porous silicon smart particles were successfully fabricated from the free-standing porous silicon thin films using ultrasono-method. DBR PSi was prepared by an electrochemical etch of heavily doped $p^{++}$-type silicon wafer. DBR PSi was prepared by using a periodic pseudo-square wave current. The surface-modified DBR PSi was prepared by either thermal oxidation or thermal hydrosilylation. Free-standing DBR PSi films were generated by lift-off from the silicon wafer substrate using an electropolishing current. Free-standing DBR PSi films were ultrasonicated to create DBR-structured porous smart particles. Three different surface-modified DBR smart particles have been prepared and used for sensing volatile organic vapors. For different types of surface-modified DBR smart particles, the shift of reflectivity mainly depends on the vapor pressure of analyte even though the surfaces of DBR smart particles are different. However huge difference in the shift of reflectivity depending on the different types of surface-modified DBR smart particles was obtained when the vapor pressures are quite similar which demonstrate a possible sensing application to specify the volatile organic vapors.

  • Although flotation techniques are often used for the removal of algal particles, the practicality of algae-harvesting technologies is limited owing to the complex and expensive facilities and equipment required for chemical coagulation. Here, we examined the feasibility of an approach to separating algal particles from water bodies without the need for chemical coagulants, depending on the condition of the algae, and to determine the optimal conditions. Using Anabaena sp., a cyanobacterium causes algal blooms in lakes, we stimulated auto-flocculation in algal particles without coagulants and conducted solid-liquid separation experiments of algal particles under various conditions. The six cultivation columns included in our analysis comprised four factors: Water temperature, light intensity, nutrients, and carbon source; auto-flocculation was induced under all treatments, with the exception of the treatment involving no limits to all factors, and algal particles were well-settled under all conditions for which auto-flocculation occurred. Meanwhile, flotation removal of auto-flocculated algal particles was attained only when nutrients were blocked after algae were grown in an optimal medium. However, no significant differences were detected between the functional groups of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) of floated and settled algal particles in the FT-IR peak, which can cause attachment by collision with micro-bubbles.
