  • The characteristics of selective oxidation prior to hot-dip galvanizing with the annealing atmosphere dew point and chemical composition in dual-phase steels and their effect on the inhibition layer formation relevant to coating adhesion have been studied using a combination of electron microscopic and surface analytical techniques. The annealed and also galvanized samples of 3 kinds of Si/Mn ratios with varied amounts of Si addition were prepared by galvanizing simulator. The dew point was controlled at soaking temperature $800^{\circ}C$ in 15%$H_2$ -85%$N_2$ atmosphere. It was shown that good adhesion factors were mainly uniformity of oxide particle distribution of low number density and low Si/Mn ratio prior to hot-dip galvanizing. Their effect was the greatly reduced coating bare spots and the formation of uniform inhibition layer leading to good adhesion of Zn overlay. The mechanism of good adhesion is suggested by two processes: the formation of inhibition layer on the oxide free surface uncovered with no $SiO_2$-containing particles in particular, and the inhibition layer bridging of oxide particles. The growth of inhibition layer was enhanced markedly by the delayed reaction of Fe and Al with the increase of Si/Mn ratio.

  • Two-dimensional hydrodynamic analysis was performed to analyze the attenuating characteristics of shock waves generated by the detonation of the bulkhead initiator. Through the interlocking analysis between HNS and HMX stacking initiator and STS bulkhead, we have precisely simulated detonation growth and pressure wave attenuation phenomena. The free surface velocity at the surface of the bulkhead was measured for quantitative comparison with the test data by VISAR. As a result, it was confirmed that the pressure attenuating pattern of the shock wave exponentially decreased according to the bulkhead thickness. The observed inflection point at the particle velocity measured over time is due to the subsequent propagation of the shock wave due to the rapid spallation of the interface between the detonator and the bulkhead.

  • The effect of V2O5 addition on the low temperature sintering of Pb(Mn1/3Sb2/3)O3-PZT ceramics, which is known as a prominent material for piezoelectric transformer application was studied, and the densification behavior and piezoelectric characteristics of the samples as a function of heating rate were also examined. V2O5 led the system to liquid phase sintering by forming liquid phase during sintering, which accelerated densification through the particle rearrangement in the early stage of sintering. The liquid phase mostly existed at grain boundaries retarded the evaporation of PbO, while the densification temperature and the weight loss of V2O5-free samples were higher than those of samples with V2O5. Faster heating improved the densification of the samples regardless of V2O5 addition. The low temperature sintering at 100$0^{\circ}C$ was achieved in PMS-PZT ceramics with high density and reasonable dielectric and piezoelectric characteristics. This result revealed optimistic way to the development of multi-layered piezoelectric transformers.

  • Partial Discharge (PD) phenomena occurred by different nature of insulating defects has been regarded as a random process by which Phase Resolved Partial Discharge Analysis (PRPDA) has been proposed and then commercially accepted for the diagnosis of the power apparatus since more than three decades. Moreover, for the same purpose, a novel approach based on the Chaotic Analysis(CAPD) has been proposed since 2000, in which PD phenomena is suggested to be considered as a deterministic dynamical process. In this work for the diagnosis of GITr, four different types of specimen were fabricated as a model of the possible defects that might possibly cause its sudden failures such as turn to turn insulation, inter coil insulation, free moving particle and protrusion. For this purpose, these defects are introduced into the GITr mock-up and experimental investigations have been carried out in order to analyze the related PD patterns by means of both PRPDA and CAPD respectively and then their comparisons are made systematically.

  • In this paper, the UHF PD(Partial Discharge) sensors for $SF_6$ insulated MV $SF_6$ switchgear have been proposed and related investigations have been performed in order to detect the PD which were produced inside the MV $SF_6$ switchgear. Firstly, the internal type UHF PD sensor based on spiral antenna theory has been developed. This type sensor is highly sensitive and has lowly effect on by on-site noise. Secondly, the external type UHF PD sensor was developed based on log periodic antenna concept. This type sensor is removable and detectable for operating switchgear. These sensors were designed and simulated using RF simulation tool. In order to verify the sensitivity of these sensors, we performed the on-site test using the mock-up switchgears including the artificial defects which were the protrusion on high voltage conductor, free moving metal particle and surface defect on insulator. These mock-up switchgear were installed on the test distribution line.

  • It is reported that semi-solid forming process takes many advantages over the conventional forming process, such as long die lift, good mechanical properties and energy saves. Rheology material has a thixotropic, pseudo-plastic and shear-thinning characteristic. Therefore, general plastic or fluid dynamic analysis is not suitable for the behavior of rheology material. So it is difficult for a numerical simulation of the rheology process to be performed because complicated processes such as the filling to include the state of the free surface and solidification in the phase transformation must be considered. Moreover, it is important to predict the deformation behavior for optimization of net shape forging process with semi-solid materials and to control liquid segregation for mechanical properties of materials. In this study, so, molecular dynamics simulation was performed for the control of liquid segregation in compression experiment as a part of study on analysis of rheology forming process.

  • The spray cross-section characteristics of two-phase spray that using external-mixing nozzle injected into a subsonic cross flow were experimentally studied with various ALR ratio that is $0{\sim}59.4%$. Suction type wind tunnel was used and experiments were conducted to ambient environment. Several plain orifice nozzles with L/d of 30 and orifice diameter of 0.5 mm and orifice length 1.5 mm were tested. Free stream velocity profiles at the injection location were measured using hot wire. Spray images were captured to study collision point and column trajectory. Phase Doppler particle analyzer(PDPA) was utilized to quantitatively measuring droplet SMD, volume flux. Measuring probe of PDPA positions was moved 3-way transverse machine. SMD distributions were layered structure and peaked at the top of the spray plume and low value at bottom of the spray. Volume flux of spray was distributed to the two side region and volume flux quantity decreased when ALR ratio increased. It was found that the perpendicularly injected two-phase spray jet of external mixing into a cross flow showing that mistlike spray moved away from the test section bottom region.

  • The flow characteristics of a circular cylinder surrounded by an outer permeable cylinder were experimentally investigated using Particle Image Velocimetry Technique in deep water flow. In order to consider the effects of diameter and porosity of the outer cylinder on flow structures of the inner cylinder, five different outer cylinder diameters (D=37.5, 52.5, 60, 75 and 90 mm) and eight different porosities (${\beta}$=0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.65, 0.7, 0.75, 0.8 and 0.85) were selected. During the experiments, the diameter of inner cylinder was kept constant as d=30 mm. The depth-averaged free-stream velocity was adjusted as U=0.156 m/s, which corresponds to the Reynolds number of Re=5000 based on the inner cylinder diameter. It has been concluded that both the outer permeable cylinder diameter and the porosity have important influences on the attenuation of vortex shedding in the wake region. The presence of outer permeable cylinder decreases the magnitude of Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy compared to the bare cylinder case. Moreover, the spectral analysis of vortex shedding frequency has revealed that the dominant frequency of vortex shedding downstream of the cylinder arrangement also reduces substantially due to the weakened Karman shear layer instability.

  • The present study aims to investigate characteristics of the flow structures around the Ahmed body by using both experimental and numerical methods. Therefore, 1/4 scale Ahmed body having $25^{\circ}$ slant angle was employed. The Reynolds number based on the body height, H and the free stream velocity, U was $Re_H=1.48{\times}10^4$. Investigations were conducted in two parts. In the first part of the study, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method was used to resolve the flow structures around the Ahmed body, numerically. In the second part of the study the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to measure instantaneous velocity fields around the Ahmed body. Time-averaged and instantaneous velocity vectors maps, streamline topology and vorticity contours of the flow fields were presented and discussed in details. Comparison of the mean and turbulent quantities of the LES results and the PIV results with the results of Lienhart et al. (2000) at different locations over the slanted surface and in the wake region of the Ahmed body were also given. Flow features such as critical points and recirculation zones in the wake region downstream of the Ahmed body were well captured. The spectra of numerically and experimentally obtained stream-wise and vertical velocity fluctuations were presented and they show good consistency with the numerical result of Minguez et al. (2008).

  • The preparation and properties of emulsions stabilized by the adsorption of solid particles at the oil-water interface are reviewed. Comparison is made with the behaviour of surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Many of the properties of Pickering emulsions are attributed to the large free energy of adsorption for particles. The main differences is due to the irreversible adsorption of particles to the interface. Phase inversion from w/o (water-in-oil) to o/w (oil-in-water) can be brought by increasing the volume fraction of water. Hydrophilic particles tend to form o/w emulsion whereas hydrophobic particles form w/o emulsion. The contact angle at the oil-water interface is main parameter to decide the emulsion type. The aspects of stability of Pickering emulsions are in contrast to general emulsions in some points. The possibility using Pickering emulsions for cosmetics is also proposed.
