In centrifugal oil filters particles are forced to move toward the filter casing wall by centrifugal force in the rotating oil flow and the particles are trapped and removed on the filter paper installed at the wall. In the present study, flow field of oil and particle motion in a centrifugal oil filter has been numerically calculated in order to estimate the filtering efficiency for various operating conditions. Fluent code was used for the numerical calculations. Uncoupling the oil flow and the particle motion and the use of particle tracking trajectory enabled the estimation of filtering efficiency for various particle sizes, particle density and the filter rotational speed. Higher filtering efficiency was observed for heavier and larger particles as well as higher filter rotational speed. For the typical case of the particle density of $6000kg/m^3$ and the particle size of $10{\mu}m$ at 3500 RPM, the calculated filtering efficiency per passage was 0.31.
The present study investigates numerically particle laden flow through compressor cascades and a rocket nozzle. Engines are affected by various particles which are suspending in the atmosphere. Especially in the case of aircraft aviating in volcanic, industrial and desert region including many particles, each components of engine system are damaged severely. That damage modes are erosion of compressor blading and rotor path components, partial or total blockage of cooling passage and engine control system degradation. Numerical prediction and experimental data, erosion rates are predicted for two materials - ceramic, soft metal - on compressor blade surface. Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) Particles included in solid rocket propelant make ablative the rocket motor nozzle and imped the expansion processes of propulsion. By the definition of particle deposition efficiency, characteristics of particles impaction are considered quantitatively Stoke number is defined over the various particle sizes and particle trajectories are treated by Lagrangian approach. Particle stability is considered by definition of Weber number in rocket nozzle and particle breakup and evaporation is simulated in a rocket nozzle.
A Superconducting High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS) system is proposed for treatment of feed-water in thermal power plant [1]. This is a method to remove the iron scale from feed-water utilizing magnetic force. One of the issues for practical use of HGMS system is to extend continuous operation period. In this study, we designed the magnetic filters by particle trajectory simulation and HGMS experiments in order to solve this problem. As a result, the quantity of magnetite captured by each filter was equalized and filter blockage was prevented. A design method of the magnetic filter was proposed which is suitable for the long-term continuous scale removal in the feed-water system of the thermal power plant.
Recently, according to increase in the requirement of electric power, a thermoelectric power plant equipped with pulverized coal combustion system is highly valued, because coal has abundant deposits and a low price compared with others. For efficient use of coal fuel, most of plant makers are studying to improve combustion performance and flame stability, and reduce pollutants emission. One of these studies is how to control the profile of particle injection and velocity dependant on coal nozzle configuration. Basically, nozzle which has mixed flow of gas and particle is required to have the balanced coal concentration at exit, but it is very difficult to obtain that by itself without help of other device. In this study, coal distribution and pressure drop in gas-solid flow are calculated by numerical method in nozzle with various shapes of venturi diffuser as a means to get even coal particle distribution. The tentative correlations of pressure drop and exit coal distribution are deduced as function of the height, length and reducing angle of venturi from the calculated results. When coal hurner nozzle is designed, these equations are very useful to optimize the shape of venturi which minimize uneven particle distribution and pressure drop within coal nozzle.
In the present study, deposition of discrete and small particles on a filter fiber was simulated by stochastic method. Trajectory of each particle was numerically solved by Langevin equation. And Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) was used to solve flow field around the filter collector for considering complex shape of deposit layer. Interaction between the flow field and the deposit layer was obtained from a converged solution from an inner-loop calculation. Simulation method is properly validated with filtration theory and collection efficiency due to different filtration parameters are examined and discussed. Morphology of deposit layer and its evolution was visualized in terms of the particle size. The particle loaded effect on collection efficiency was also discussed.
In this work, a dielectrophoresis-based particle-separation device is developed which is to be used to continuously separate particles in microchannels. We fabricated the particle-separation device with combining the benefits of electrode-based DEP and insulator-based DEP. The DEP forces are generated by an array of electrodes located in both sidewalls of a main channel. According to the magnitude and frequency of electrical signals, particles with different dielectric properties experience different DEP forces, and therefore, continuously move along different streamlines in the main flow channel without need of pre-focusing process. Based on this mechanism, we examined the performance of the device by controlling the trajectory of polystyrene particles. This device is applicable to the investigation of dielectric properties of biological cells as well as the continuous separation of biological cells.
The effect of block arrangement has been investigated on the particle deposition in the specified collecting cell of two-stage electrostatic precipitator by numerical analysis. Recirculation zone existed at the downstream of the block in the collecting cell, and the particles entering the recirculation zone were deposited on the collecting plate. Particle trajectory and deposition had considerably different phenomenon according to electrostatic and inertial effect, which depended on inlet mean velocity, electrostatic number, and particle diameter in the collecting cell. The total collection efficiency reached a minimum value through an interaction of electrostatic and inertial effect. In the computational domain, total collection efficiency for the case of two blocks in the computational domain was more than that of one block at the relative small electrostatic number. However as the block distance and inertial effect increased, the difference between the collection efficiency of two cases decreased. In the range of relatively small particle size total collection efficiency was always superior to particle collection efficiency that was predicted by Deutsch equation.
One of purposes in this study was to confirm the behavior of coughed particles under different ventilation conditions. Three types of ventilation systems were applied for this experiment and the properties of coughed particles were measured using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in an intensive care unit. The changes of total airborne particles for each case showed different trends according to the ventilation type and time, but the deposited particles were similar in all conditions. Although the time taken for 50% of the particles to be deposited was the fastest in case 2, the portion of deposited particles after 300 seconds was only 5% in all conditions. In case 1, a relatively small number of particles were deposited on the wall, but the particle exhaust and deposition on the occupants were the highest. In case 3, the downward ventilation was applied as that recommended by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and showed different exhaust efficiencies according to the particle size.
Variations in ambient atmospheric carbon monoxide(CO) observed at an inland mining site in the Indo-Gangetic plains, Jaduguda ($22^{\circ}38'N$, $86^{\circ}21'E$, 122m MSL, ~75 km away from the coast of the Bay of Bengal) during the Tsunami of 26 December 2004 were monitored. CO mixing ratio over this site was measured using a non-dispersive infrared analyzer (Monitor Europe Model 9830 B). Back trajectory analysis data obtained using NOAA Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) Model was also used for this study. Variations in CO mixing ratio at a coastal site, Thiruvananthapuram ($8^{\circ}29'N$, $76^{\circ}57'E$, located ~2 km from the Arabian Sea coast) have also been investigated using CO data retrieved from the Measurement Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument. Ground-based measurements indicated abnormal variations in CO mixing ratio at Jaduguda from 25 December 2004 evening (previous day of the Tsunami). MOPITT CO data showed an enhancement in CO mixing ratio over Thiruvananthapuram on the Tsunami day. Back trajectory analyses over Thiruvananthapuram and Jaduguda for a period of 10 days from $21^{st}$ to $30^{th}$ December 2004 depicted that there were unusual vertical movements of air from high altitudes from 25 December 2004 evening. CO as well as the back trajectory analyses data showed that the variations in the wind regimes and consequently wind driven transport are the most probable reasons for the enhancement in CO observed at Jaduguda and Thiruvananthapuram during the Tsunami.
