The dry deposition fluxes of particulate polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured along with their mass size distributions at Seoul and Incheon in fall in 1999. The dry deposition fluxes of PCBs were in the range of $16.7{\sim}62.2ng/m^2/day$. The ambient concentrations of particulate PCBs were in the range of 0.07 to $0.20ng/m^3$. Generally, the mass size distribution of particulate PCBs shows bi-modal distribution. The mass fraction of PCBs in the fine particle fraction ($D_p<2.1 {\mu}m$) was over than 55% of the total PCBs concentrations. It was found that Seoul and Incheon were not the major source of PCBs emissions in Korea. Based on the comparison with the measurement data in summer, 1999, it is likely that both the dry deposition fluxes and ambient particulate PCBs concentrations were not site-specific.
The aerosol number concentration have measured with an aerodynamic particle sizer spectrometer(APS) at Gosan site, which is known as background area in Korea, from January to September 2011. The temporal variation and the size distribution of aerosol number concentration have been investigated. The entire averaged aerosol number concentration in the size range 0.25~32.0 ${\mu}m$ is about 252 particles/$cm^3$. The number concentration in small size ranges(${\leq}0.5{\mu}m$) are very higher than those in large size ranges, such as, the number concentration in range of larger than 6.5 ${\mu}m$ are almost zero particles/$cm^3$. The contributions of the number concentration to PM10 and/or PM2.5 are about 34%, 20.1% and 20.4% in the size range 0.25~0.28 ${\mu}m$, 0.28~0.30 ${\mu}m$ and 0.30~0.35 ${\mu}m$, respectively, however, the contributions are below 1% in range of larger than 0.58 ${\mu}m$. The monthly variations in the number concentration in smaller size range(<1.0 ${\mu}m$) are evidently different from the variations in range of larger than 1.0 ${\mu}m$, but the variations are appeared similar patterns in smaller size range(<1.0 ${\mu}m$), also the variations in range of larger than 1.0 ${\mu}m$ are similar too. The diurnal variations in the number concentration for smaller particle(<1.0 ${\mu}m$) are not much, but the variations for larger particle are very evident. Size-fractioned aerosol number concentrations are dramatically decreased with increased particle size. The monthly differences in the size-fractioned number concentrations for smaller size range(<0.7 ${\mu}m$) are not observed, however, the remarkable monthly differences are observed for larger size than 0.7 ${\mu}m$.
Size distributions of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and its water-soluble organic and inorganic components were measured between January and February 2021 at an urban site in Gwangju in order to identify the major factors that determine their size distributions. Their size distributions during the study period were mainly divided into two groups. In the first group, PM, NO3-, SO42-, NH4+ and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) exhibited bi-modal size distributions with a dominant condensation mode at a particle size of 0.32 ㎛. This group was dominated by local production of secondary water-soluble components under atmospheric stagnation and low relative humidity (RH) conditions, rather than long-range transportation of aerosol particles from China. On the other hand, in the second group, they showed tri-modal size distributions with a very pronounced droplet mode at a diameter of 1.0 ㎛. These size distributions were attributable to the local generation and accumulation of secondary aerosol particles under atmospheric conditions such as atmospheric stagnation and high RH, and an increase in the influx of atmospheric aerosol particles by long-distance transportation abroad. Contributions of droplet mode NO3-, SO42-, NH4+ and WSOC to fine particles in the second group were significantly higher than those in the first group period. However, their condensation mode contributions were about two-fold higher in the first group than in the second group. The significant difference in the size distribution of the accumulation mode of the WSOC and secondary ionic components between the two groups was due to the influx of aerosol particles with a long residence time by long-distance transport from China and local weather conditions (e.g., RH).
We consider a particle walking on the nonnegative integers and each unit of time it makes, given it is at site k, either a jump of size m distance units to the right with probability $p_{k}$ or it goes back (falls down) to its starting point 0, a retaining barrier, with probability $v_{k}\;=\;1\;-\;p_{k}$. This is a Markov chain on the integers $mZ^{+}$. We show that if $v_{k}$ has a nonzero limit, then the Markov chain is positive recurrent. However, if $v_{k}$ speeds to 0, then we may get transient Markov chain. A critical speeding rate to zero is identified to get transience, null recurrence, and positive recurrence. Another type of random walk on $Z^{+}$ is considered in which a particle moves m distance units to the right or 1 distance unit to left with probabilities $p_{k}\;and\;q_{k}\;=\;1\;-\;p_{k}$, respectively. A necessary condition to having a stationary distribution and positive recurrence is obtained.

Maize, in Hungary, is the fodder-plant grown in the biggest quantity. It is not only used as a fodder but other products such as iso-sugar are made from it, too. The quality of the fodder and the produce is largely dependent on the composition of the supplied maize to the processing site. The examination of quality parameters besides conventional methods are investigated and measured by NIR spectroscopy on a routine basis. The investigated parameters are the following: water, total protein, starch and oil content. The accuracy and precision of determining these parameters we, apart from the wet chemical methods, influenced by sample preparation to a great extent. One of the main features of this is the sample particle size and its distribution across the sample. The uneven distribution of particle size negatively influences the measurement accuracy, decreases model robustness and prediction ability. With these in mind the aim of our experiment was to investigate the effect of particle size on the accuracy of maize composition determination using reflection measurement setup. In addition, we tested different spectrum transformations, which are suitable for canceling this effect. In our experiment 47 samples were analyzed with three different mesh sizes (1.5mm, 1.8mm and 2mm). The results of our findings are presented here.

The objective of this study is to estimate the chemical compositions and to identify qualitative sources of fall-out particles in study area. Also, this study used a spatial analysis to estimate spatial distributions and average deposition flux. In this study, the chemical compositions of fall-out particle samples collected at Muncheon lake from May 2010 to January 2011 were analyzed by ICP and IC. The monthly trend of deposition fluxes for fall-out particles showed highest in June ($107.61kg/km^2/day$) and lowest in October ($22.22kg/km^2/day$). The average fluxes of Fe, Si, Al, Zn and Ba are 0.44, 0.24, 0.20, 0.17, $0.09kg/km^2/day$, respectively. Also, the average fluxes of $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, $NH_4^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Na^+$ are 6.48, 5.01, 4.96, 1.75, $1.37kg/km^2/day$, respectively. A Factor analysis identified four sources such as 1) nonferrous metal, motor vehicle, and agriculture, 2) soil, 3) field burning, incineration, and 4) road dust and oil burning. The IDW (inverse distance weighting) spatial analysis method was used to estimate spatial distribution and average deposition flux for fall-out particles. A total average deposition fluxes estimated in Muncheon lake were 936.15 kg/month. The spatial distribution trend of deposition flux showed higher at site 1 and 2 than at site 3, 4 because local road is adjacent to the site 1 and 2.
The aerosol number concentration have measured with an aerodynamic particle sizer spectrometer(APS) at Gosan site in Jeju, Korea, from March 2010 to March 2011. And then the atmospheric aerosol number concentration, the temporal variation and the size distribution of aerosol number concentration have been investigated. The aerosol number concentration varies significantly from 748 particles/$cm^3$ to zero particles/$cm^3$. The average number concentration in small size ranges are very higher than those in large size ranges. The number concentrations in the size range 0.25~0.28 ${\mu}m$, 0.40~0.45 ${\mu}m$ and 2.0~2.5 ${\mu}m$ are about 84 particles/$cm^3$, 2 particles/$cm^3$ and 0.4 particles/$cm^3$, respectively. The number concentrations in range of larger than 7.5 ${\mu}m$ are below 0.001 particles/$cm^3$. The seasonal variations in the number concentration for smaller particle(<1.0 ${\mu}m$) are not much, but the variations for larger particle are very evident. And strong amplitudes of diurnal variations of entire averaged aerosol number concentration are not observed. Size-fractioned aerosol number concentrations are dramatically decreased with increased particle size. The size-fractioned aerosol number concentrations in size range 0.8~4.0 ${\mu}m$ during nighttime are evidently higher than during daytime, but similar levels are appeared in other size range. The seasonal differences in the size-fractioned number concentrations for smaller size range(<0.7 ${\mu}m$) are not observed, however, the remarkable seasonal differences are observed for larger size than 0.7 ${\mu}m$.

This study was conducted to identify the magnitude of first flush in small city urban area and to provide the basic information on the criteria of stormwater runoff management. Monitoring site was surrounded by residential area in Gumi city near to national industrial complex and the monitoring period was three months. Total watershed area was 24.9 ha, where 80% of the area is impervious (asphalt of pavement type). Periodic monitoring of conventional water quality parameters were conducted with six times of rainfall period. Event mean and site mean concentrations for all the parameters were calculated based on the analytical results. Particle size distribution was 9.82 ${\mu}m$ for $D_{0.1}$, 38.99 ${\mu}m$ for $D_{0.5}$ and 159.61 ${\mu}m$ for $D_{0.9}$ respectively. First flush phenomenon was detected highly in particulate solids than dissolved ones. The first flush criteria results by mass first flush contained between 44.4% to 58.5% pollutant mass during the first 30% of runoff volume. Mass first flush ratio and particle size distribution obtained in this study are expected to provide the basic information for the design and operation of non-point source treatment facility.
Cause of contamination in the study area nearby Jang Hang Refinery is dust scattering in refinery stack, and soil washing treatment is one of the proper technologies for soil remediation in this area. Site conditions frequently limit the selection of a treatment process. A treatment technology may be eliminated based on the soil classification or physicochemical characteristics of soil. This study was assessed the soil washing efficiency by conducting of soil characteristic analysis in the vicinity of Jang Hang Refinery Stack within a 2 km radius. Also, it was decided about remedial range with comparative analysis of As in soil by Korean Standard Test Method before/after revision, whereupon As concentration in soil showed a increasing tendency after revision. As a result, the soil washing using the size separation of soil was determined through identifying of As species in the soil. In this site, only particle size distribution and water content of soil can provide the initial means of screening for the potential use of soil washing.
Rates of the sedimentation and particle mixing have been estimated by applying uranium-series disequilibrium techniques to three sediment cores collected from the korea Deep Ocean Study (KODOS) site between the clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones (CCFZ) of the Equatorial Pacific. Sedimentation rates based on the profiles of excess /SUP 230/Th activity and /SUP 230/ Th/SUB xs//SUP 232/ Th activity ratios at the southeastern part of the study area were estimated to be in the order of a few millimeters per thousand year, while at the northwestern part a factor of ten lower. Excess activities of /SUP 230/Th and /SUP 230/Th ratios showed intervals of constant values in the upper part of the sediment cores, probably generated by biological particle mixing. A "two-box" advection-diffusion steady state mixing model was employed in order to estimate particle mixing rates in the upper and the lower layers, based on the distribution profiles of excess /SUP 210/Pb activities. Particle mixing coefficients were estimated to be in the order of 10$^1$ cm$^2$/y in the upper layer and 10/SUP -1/-10/SUP 0/ cm$^2$/y in the lower layer.
