  • We used video-rate Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) to observe the motion of blood cells in a micro-channel. Video-rate CLSM allowed us to acquire images at the rate of 30 frames per second. The acquired images were used to perform Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), thus providing the velocity profile of the blood in a micro-channel. While previous confocal microscopy-assisted PIV required exogenous micro/nano particles as the tracing particles, we employed blood cells as tracing particles for the CLSM in the reflection mode, which uses light back-scattered from the sample. The blood flow at various depths of the micro-channel was observed by adjusting the image plane of the microscope. The velocity profile at different depths of the channel was measured. The confocal micro-PIV technique used in the study was able to measure blood velocity up to a few hundreds ${\mu}m/sec$, equivalent to the blood velocity in the capillaries of a live animal. It is expected that the technique presented can be applied for in vivo blood flow measurement in the capillaries of live animals.

  • Flaw visualization and velocity field measurement methods have practical applications in the various fluid engineering fields, such as mechanics, ships, and heat fluids. In this study, the basic principles and theoretical methods are used to establish an application technique of Particle Imae Velocimetry(abbreviated to PIV below). Accordingly, the measured results of velocity field distribution of a section inside the Circulating Water Channel (abbreviated to CWC below) are computed using the PIV is presented. The uniformity of velocity distribution of the section in CWC is confirmed, by comparing this PIV data with the existing current meter data. Also, in order to measure the flaw fields of surroundings of 2-dimensional cylinder in the CWC, the flaw visualization technique using the PIV is applied.

  • A high resolution digital cinematic Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) has been developed. The system consists of a high speed CCD camera, a continuous Ar-ion laser and a computer with camera controller. To improve the spatial resolution, we adopt a Recursive Technique for velocity interrogation. At first, we obtain a velocity vector for a larger interrogation window size based on the conventional two-frame cross-correlation PIV analysis using the FFT algorithm. Based on the knowing velocity information, more spatially resolved velocity vectors are obtained in the next iteration step with smaller interrogation windows. The correct velocity vector at the first step is found to be critical, so we apply a Multiple Correlation Validation(MCV) technique in order to decrease the spurious vectors. The MCV technique turns out to improve SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) of the correlation table. The developed cinematic PIV method has been applied to the measurement of the unsteady flow characteristics of a Rushton turbine mixer. A total of 3,245 instantaneous velocity vectors were successfully obtained with 4 ms time resolution. The acquired spatial resolution corresponds the performance of the conventional high resolution digital PIV system using a $1K{\times}1K$ CCD camera.

  • The fundamental mechanism of a dispersed two-phase flow was investigated. Experiments were carried out to understand how the particles behaves under the influence of the particle size, shape, metamorphoses (bubble) and buoyancy of a single particle which is ascending from the standstill water. Two CCD cameras were employed for image processing of the behavior of the particles and the surrounding flow, which was interpreted with the technique of correlation PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and PTV (Particle Tracking Veloci- metry), respectively The experimental results showed that the large density difference bet- ween a particle and water caused high relative velocity and induced zigzag motion of the particle. Furthermore, the turbulence intensity of a bubble was about twice the case of the spherical solid particle of similar diameter.

  • The most serious problems related to the cardiovascular prothesis are thrombosis and hemolysis. It is known that the flow pattern of cardiovascular prostheses is highly correlated with thrombosis and hemolysis. Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) is a usual method to get flow pattern, which is difficult to operate and has narrow measure region. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) can solve these problems. Because the flow speed of valve is too high to catch particles by CCD camera, high-speed camera (Hyspeed : Holland-Photonics) was used. The estimated maximum flow speed was 5m/sec and maximum trackable length is 0.5 cm, so the shutter speed was determined as 1000 frames per sec. Several image processing techniques (blurring, segmentation, morphology, etc) were used for the preprocessing. Particle tracking algorithm and 2-D interpolation technique which were necessary in making gridrized velocity pronto, were applied to this PIV program. By using Single-Pulse Multi-Frame particle tracking algorithm, some problems of PIV can be solved. To eliminate particles which penetrate the sheeted plane and to determine the direction of particle paths are these solving methods. 1-D relaxation fomula is modified to interpolate 2-D field. Parachute artificial heart valve which was developed by Seoul National University and Bjork-Shiely valve was testified. For each valve, different flow pattern, velocity profile, wall shear stress and mean velocity were obtained.

  • The practical use of the particle image velocimetry(PIV), a whole-field velocity measurement method, requires the use of fast, reliable, computer-based methods for tracking velocity vectors. The full search block matching, the most widely studied and applied technique both in area of PIV and Image Coding and Compression, is computationally costly. Many less expensive alternatives have been proposed mostly in the area of Image Coding and Compression. Among others, TSS, NTSS, HPM are introduced for the past PIV analysis, and found to be successful. But, these algorithms are based on small dynamic range, 7 pixels/frame in maximum displacement. To analyze the images with large displacement, Even and Odd field image separation and a simple version of multi-resolution hierarchical procedures are introduced in this paper. Comparison with other algorithms are summarized. A Results of application to the turbulent backward step flow shows the improvement of new algorithm.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of ER(Electro-Rheological) fluid flow in a horizontal rectangular tube with or without D.C voltage. To determine some characteristics of the ER flow, 2D PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique is employed for velocity measurement. This research found the mean velocity distribution with 0kV/mm, 1.0kV/mm and 1.5kV/mm for Re = 0, 0.62, 1.29 and 2.26. When the strength of the electric field increased, the cluster of ERF are clearly strong along the test tube and the flow rate decreased. In this study, the rheology of ER fluid stagnating or flowing through a dispersion meter will be investigated by PIV method. And then the ER effect, which appears at the ER valves and their appliance will be visualized.

  • Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow characteristics and found the effect of intake port geometries on engine performance. The flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady flow rig for different intake ports. Tumble intensity of intake configurations with different entry angles were quantified with a tumble meter. The velocity and angular momentum distributions in the tumble adaptor were measured under steady conditions with PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). We have obtained the results that flow structure becomes complicated by valve interference at low valve lift. As the valve interferences were reducing and the flow pattern changed to large vortex structure with tumble direction, intake ports with different entry angles have different tumble centers. Tumble eccentricity of intake port with low entry angle was large, so that the port had relatively much angular momentum compared to others which was expected to improve combustion performance.

  • A commercial DOHC four valve engine was modified to make a single-cylinder optical model engine with replaceable head. Three kinds of head were used to generate swirl, tumble, and combined swirl/tumble motion. Schlieren visualization technique was applied to characterize the in-cylinder flow qualitatively. Particle Image velocimetry has been developed and applied for the quantitative flow measurements. Axial and tangential flow motion inside the cylinder has been characterized. The swirl/tumble port shows beneficial results in terms of turbulence generation for the initial flame propagation and mean swirl motion for the overall flame propagation.
