  • Mineral composition and chemical properties of Hwangto (reddish residual soil) that used in feeding of cattles at Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, Korea were examined according to particle size separation such as gravel, sand, silt, coarse clay and fine clay. Mineral composition analyses reveal that gravel and sand are mainly composed of quartz and feldspars and that kaolin mineral and illite are dominant in clay and silt. Iron oxides are mainly included in fine clay. According to chemical analyses of major elements, Al, Fe and $H_2O$ contents are increased with decreasing of particle size. This trend well agrees with increase of clay minerals in smaller particles, Chemical analyses of trace elements indicate that contents of Zn, Rb, Sr, Ba, Pb significantly differ with particle sizes. Ba and Sr are included in feldspars since these elements are abundant in sand containing abundant feldspars. Pb and Sm are abundant in sample before particle size separation, but the contents are significantly decreased after separation. Therefore, most of these elements appear to be existed as removable phase. Nb, La, Th, Ce are more abundant in silt. The contents of all the other trace elements tend to be increased in smaller particles containing more clay minerals. The contents of changeable cations and teachable elements in acid and alkali solutions are high in clay samples. All the above results indicate that using the portion of smaller particle of Hwangto for livestock feed rather than bulk Hwangto can improve cation exchangeable capacity, ion leaching capacity and sorption properties.

  • For the systematic scientific management of tidal flat sediment in Julpo bay of Korea, this study conducted a survey of particle composition, organic matter(l.L) and heavy metals for three lines ; including F, R and L lines in tidal flat sediment. Particle composition of tidal flat sediments consisted predominantly of clay at F line which was in right angle direction to the coast, whereas R and L lines were located horizontally along the coast and consisted predominantly of silt. Mean grain size values of tidal flat sediments were in the range of 3.7 ${\phi}{\sim}$10.4 ${\phi}$(average 7${\phi}$). The contents of heavy metals observed at R and L lines were lower than those at F line. The correlation analysis among heavy metals, organic matter and particle size was found to have a good interrelationship. For the evaluation of heavy metals pollution, two criteria of US NOAA and KEI(in Korea) were applied Heavy metals pollution level of tidal flat sediments belonged in Non polluted and Moderately polluted groups in US EPA criteria, and its pollution levels sat below ERL in NOAA criteria. The results of heavy metals pollution level obtained by KEI criteria were found to be less than the goal level.

  • Great concerns about atmospheric aerosols are attributed to their multiple roles to atmospheric processes. For example, atmospheric aerosols influence global climate, directly by scattering or absorbing solar radiations and indirectly by serving as cloud condensation nuclei. They also have a significant impact on human health and visibility. Many of these effects depend on the size and composition of atmospheric aerosols, and thus detailed information on the physicochemical properties and the distribution of airborne particles is critical to accurately predict their impact on the Earth's climate as well as human health. A single particle analysis technique, named low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis (low-Z particle EPMA) that can determine the concentration of low-Z elements such as carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in a microscopic volume has been developed. The capability of quantitative analysis of low-Z elements in individual particle allows the characterization of especially important atmospheric particles such as sulfates, nitrates, ammonium, and carbonaceous particles. Furthermore, the diversity and the complicated heterogeneity of atmospheric particles in chemical compositions can be investigated in detail. In this review, the development and methodology of low-Z particle EPMA for the analysis of atmospheric aerosols are introduced. Also, its typical applications for the characterization of various atmospheric particles, i.e., on the chemical compositions, morphologies, the size segregated distributions, and the origins of Asian dust, urban aerosols, indoor aerosols in underground subway station, and Arctic aerosols, are illustrated.

  • The hydration of cement contributes to the performance characteristics of concrete, such as strength and durability. In order to improve the utilization efficiency of cement and its early properties, the particle size distribution (PSD) of cement varies considerably, and the effects of the particle size distribution of cement on the hydration process should be considered. In order to evaluate effects of PSD separately, experiments testing the isothermal heat generated during the hydration of cements with different particle size distributions but the same chemical composition have been carried out. The measurable hydration depth for cement hydration was proposed and deduced based on the experimental results, and a PSD hydration model was developed in this paper for simulating the effects of particle size distribution on the hydration process of cement. First, a reference hydration rate was derived from the isothermal heat generated by the hydration of ordinary Portland cement. Then, the model was extended to take into account the effect of water-to-cement ratio, hereinafter which was referred to as PSD hydration model. Finally, the PSD hydration model was applied to simulate experiments measuring the isothermal heat generated by the hydration of cement with different particle size distributions at different water-to-cement ratios. This showed that the PSD hydration model had simulated the effects of particle size distribution and water-to-cement ratio on the hydration process of cement with satisfactory accuracy.

  • Asian Dust samples were collected in the ambient air of Seosan, Western Korea, in spring of 2000∼2002. PM (Particulate Matter) concentrations were 199,8$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ in the first Asian Dust period (March, 23∼24) and 249.4$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ in the second period (April, 7∼9) of 2000. Compared with the concentrations in 2000, relatively low PM concentrations, 157.3$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ were measured in the periods of 2001 (April, 24∼26). Especially high PM concentration 953.1$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ were measured in the periods of 2002 (March, 21∼22). The variation in the PM concentration was observed according to the time for the formation of Asian dust. Considering the particle size distributions of Asian dust, a high concentration was also observed in coarse particle region. The results of backward trajectory model showed the route of the dust storms from northern area of Mongol and Gobi desert. Various mycelia grown from fungal spores were observed on the PM samples and identified at the genus level. All the genera from the three years (2000∼2002), Fusarium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Basipetospora, Epicoccum and Monotospora are hyphomycetes in the division Fungi imperfecti (Deuteromycota). Fungal composition on the dust sample in March, 2000 was similar to the result of March, 2002. However, the result of April, 2001 was obviously different from the other dust periods. The variations of fungal compositions between the dust periods could be caused by the trajectories of the dust storms.

  • To prove pseudo-homopolymerization(PHP) method indirectly for general system which includes more than one growing radicals per particle, Mayo-Lewis equation of bulk copolymer system was derived form probability equation about instantaneous copolymer composition of emulsion copolymer system during interval II. From Extended Smith-Ewart equation proposed by Ballard et al. in emulsion copolymerization, exact solution was obtained for 0-1 system (i.e., the system containing no more than one growing radical per particle). From the exact solution, average number of radicals per particle and instantaneous copolymer composition were predicted to reach the steady state which a few minutes. So the reliability of this approximation method could by proved directly for 0-1 system. Styrene-butadiene(St-Bu) and Styrene-methyl methacrylate (St-MMA) system were used for model calculations.

  • The present study was focused on the synthesis of a zirconium-based alloyed nanopowder by the plasma arc discharge process. The chemical composition, phase structure, particle size and hydrogen sorption property of the synthesized powders under various synthesis conditions were analyzed using XRF, XRD, SEM, XPS and the ASTM-F798 method. The chemical composition of the synthesized Zr-V-Fe-based powders approached that of the raw material with an increasing hydrogen fraction in the powder synthesis atmosphere. The synthesized $Zr_{55}V_{29}Fe_{16}$ powder consist of a mixed phase structure of the $Zr,\;ZrH_2,\;FeV\;and\;Zr(V_{1-x}Fe_{x})_2$ phases. This powder has an average particle size of about 20 nm. The synthesized $Zr_{55}V_{29}Fe_{16}$ nanopowder showed getter characteristics, even though it had a lower hydrogen sorption speed than the $Zr_{57}\;V{36}\;Fe_7$ getter powder. However, the synthesized Zr nanopowder with an average particle size of 20 nm showed higher hydrogen sorption speed than the $Zr_{57}\;V{36}\;Fe_7$ getter powder.

  • The effects of reactant composition on the particle size distribution, synthetic yield, and density of Phenol-formaldehyde bead were examined in the synthesis of resol-type phenolic resin. Decrease of the content of DI water as dispersion media can increase the viscosity of suspension, which may cause the difference of particle size distribution and aggregation. The average particle size of synthesized beads was also decreased with the increasing content of stabilizer which can affect the interfacial area. The amount of crosslinking agent showed no effect on the size distribution and synthetic yield, but it made a decrease in the density of synthesized bead due to the macropore in the bead.

  • Poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(butyl acrylate) PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles were prepared by the emulsion polymerization of MMA and BA in the presence of different concentration of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The following conclusions are drawn from the measured conversion and particle size distribution, morphology, average molecular weight distribution, observation of film formation and particle formation, glass transition temperature and physical properties of polymerized core-shell composition particles for using adhesive binder. When the concentration of 0.03 wt% surfactant, the conversions of PMMA and PBA core polymerization are excellent as 95.8% for PMMA core and 92.3% for PBA core. Core-shell composite particles are obtained 90.0% for PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles and 89.0% for PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles. It is considered that the core and shell particles are polymerized to be confirmed FT-IR spectra and average molecular weight measured with a GPC, formation of the composite particles is confirmed by the film formation from normal temperature, and composition of inside and outside of the composite particle is confirmed by TEM photograph. The synthesized polymer has two glass transition temperatures, suggesting that the polymer is composed of core polymer and shell polymer unlike general copolymers. It is considered that each core-shell composite particle can be used as a high functionality adhesion binder by the measurement of tensile strength and elongation.

  • Alumina-glass composites which are considered as the material of the choice for all dental crown was prepared by aqeous-based tape casting and sintering for 2h at 1120$^{\circ}C$ followed by glass infiltration for 2h at 1100$^{\circ}C$ Biaxial strength and fracture toughness of the composites were evaluated to determine the optimum composition of the tape as a function of the amount of constituent such as alumina binder and plasticizer. The strength and the fracture toughness of the alumina tape increased with increasing the contents of alumina and binder. These observations are consistent with in fluence of the constituents on mean alumuna particle distance in tapes suggesting that high strength of the glass infiltrated alumina composites is related to toughening by crack bowing. The biaxial strength and the fracture toughness of the composite containing the optimum constituent composition were 523 MPa and 3.3 MPa$.$1/2 respectively.
