  • The creation of open spaces has both direct and indirect impacts on the local economy, society, culture, and environment. Since the public usually finances these spaces, it is necessary to ensure procedural rationality by promoting consensus among residents and other stakeholders. This study examines the extent of public participation in the creation of open spaces and summarizes trends. By analyzing seven cases of open space development based on participation in South Korea, the study identifies the characteristics and progression of participation during four phases of the development process in the Gwanghwamun Plaza Restructuring Project (2016-2022). During the agenda-setting phase, the Gwanghwamun Forum was convened to establish agendas for the plaza's restructuring. The design and governance phase included a design competition to select a proposal for the plaza, alongside the establishment of the Gwanghwamun Citizens' Committee for governance. Despite proactive efforts in the conflict resolution phase to halt extensive restructuring and enhance communication, civic groups opposed the project by presenting five distinct agendas. In the implementation phase, multiple public participation programs were conducted before the plaza's reopening. The study found that public participation in the Gwanghwamun Plaza project faced challenges such as inadequate participation conditions, limited information sharing, and monotonous participation opportunities. Although the institutional environment for public participation is improving, practical limitations remain. Therefore, a comprehensive examination of open space creation through public participation is necessary.

  • Considering constantly increasing number of internet users and information-oriented society with high speed internet network, the application of computer technology is considered to be valuable in urban planning. Particularly, since using Geographic Information System (GIS) is expected to be the best method to convey the information related to the urban planning. Therefore, this study aims at the development of participation system by using GIS and Internet. The system consists of Basic Module, Disposal Module and Decision Support Module. Each module is designed for expressing planning information and processing database, opinion statement and convenience of citizens, and the effectiveness of administration process and decision making. These are connected each other in a basic and simple form, i.e. Java Script and HTML, and the system was realized through data process, Map date and PostGIS for Mapping, and PHP. Last but not least, this system has been tested on the internet and the result indicated its convenience and availability in actual use concluding that participation system has enough application value on urban planning process.

  • Recent research has shown that elementary school students can experience epistemic affect -emotions and feelings experienced within epistemic practices, such as the enjoyment of having a wonderful idea or uncomfortable feeling of at a cognitive dissonance- during modeling process. This study explores how an introverted elementary student could participate in the modeling process by constructing an epistemic affect. Based on the theory of constructed emotion, we analyzed one elementary student's constructed epistemic affect using data resources such as emotion diaries, video recordings, and post interviews. We selected one introverted student (a fifth grader), showing peripheral and full participation during modeling. Specifically, we explored which emotions were constructed when she participated in modeling peripherally -and which epistemic affect was constructed when she participated fully- during the construction, evaluation, and revision processes. The research results showed, first, that the introverted elementary student came to participate in the model construction process by constructing the epistemic affect called aha. Second, the results showed that she came to participate in the model revision process by constructing the epistemic affect called feeling that the reasoning was wrong when confronting the rebuttals of the other student. Finally, she came to participate in the model evaluation process by constructing the epistemic affect called dislike of another student's idea. Through our exploration of the constructed epistemic affect of the introverted elementary student, we deduced that it is important to help each student to construct an epistemic affect that facilitates his or her participation in modeling. Also, we discussed that it is important to understand the impact of the emotional load that can occur for each student, depending on the constructed past, present, and future emotions.

  • The conservation or practical use of a lot of closed schools which occurred from 1982 all over the country by governmental policy has been becoming important concerns to local resident and community with economical and administrative interest. A lot of examples, sold or rented to public institutions or a person, which have been using by welfare facilities for inhabitants, facilities for education, youth, company, culture and art, and other use, could be found. It could be said that the process of user's participation of these examples is very high, that is, a lot of examples of our surrounding is applied with ecological concept have participated by most users and local residents directly to architectural repair and renewal process, and practical use. In this background, I choose total five examples more than one by Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam district to investigate examples of closed schools applied ecological architectural concept and I researched reconfiguration of site, change of exterior or interior material, application of ecological system, and role as local community.
