Influence of mineral by-products on compressive strength and microstructure of concrete at high temperature

  • In the present work, Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) and Fly ash (FA) were used as partial replacement of Natural Sand (NS) and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) by weight. One control mix, one with GBFS, three with FA and three with GBFS-FA combined mixes were prepared. Replacements were 50% GBFS with NS and 20%, 30% and 40% FA with OPC. Preliminary investigation on development of compressive strength was carried out at 7, 28 and 90 days to ensure sustainability of waste materials in concrete matrix at room temperature. After 90days, thermo-mechanical study was performed on the specimen for a temperature regime of $200^{\circ}-1000^{\circ}C$ followed by furnace cooling. Weight loss, visual inspection along with colour change, residual compressive strength and microstructure analysis were performed to investigate the effect of replacement of GBFS and FA. Although adding waste mineral by-products enhanced the weight loss, their pozzolanicity and formation history at high temperature played a significant role in retaining higher residual compressive strength even up to $800^{\circ}C$. On detail microstructural study, it has been found that addition of FA and GBFS in concrete mix improved the density of concrete by development of extra calcium silicate gel before fire and restricts the development of micro-cracks at high temperature as well. In general, the authors are in favour of combined replacement mix in view of high volume mineral by-products utilization as fire protection.

  • The present work aims at investigating the effects of using various fine mineral additions as partial replacement to Portland cement on the tribological properties of concrete. To achieve this goal, concrete mixtures were prepared with different percentages (10, 20 and 30%) of limestone fillers (LF) and natural pozzolana (NP), and (20, 40 and 60%) of blast furnace slag (BFS). The interface yield stress (τ0) and viscous constants (η) that allow characterizing friction at the concrete-pipe wall interface were determined using a rotational tribometer. In addition, the compositions of the boundary layers that formed in the pumping pipes of the different concretes under study were also identified and analyzed. The experimental results obtained showed that the concretes studied have a linear tribological behavior that can be described by the Bingham model. Furthermore, the use of different mineral additions, especially limestone fillers and blast furnace slags, even at high rates, had a beneficial effect on the optimization of the volume of paste present in the boundary layer, which made it possible to significantly reduce the viscous constant of concrete. However, a maximum rate of 10% of natural pozzolana was recommended to achieve tribological properties that are favorable to the pumpability of concrete.

In Vitro Antiproliferative and Apoptosis Inducing Activity of Bibimbap on HT-29 Human Colorectal Adenocarcinoma Cells

  • The present study was designed to investigate the antiproliferative activity and molecular mechanisms of Bibimbap in HT-29 human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells. Bibimbap extract inhibited the proliferation of HT-29 cells by 50% at a concentration of 10.1±0.17 mg/mL for 48 h. The population of live cells decreased slightly, and the morphology changed with a reduction in cell volume (pyknosis) with Bibimbap. Treatment with 5 mg/mL of Bibimbap resulted in slight cell shrinkage. Furthermore, as the Bibimbap dose increased to 10 mg/mL, these characteristics were more evident, and HT-29 cells exhibited partial detachment by staining with the DNA-binding dye Hoechst 33342. Flow cytometric analysis by Annexin V and PI double staining showed that Bibimbap increased the levels of apoptosis. Analysis of the mechanism of these events showed that Bibimbap-treated cells exhibited a mitochondria-dependent apoptotic pathway through the modulation of caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9, and poly-ADP ribose polymerase, as well as Bax and Bcl-2 expression in dose- and time-dependent manners. Consequently, Bibimbap exerts a significant antiproliferative effect on HT-29 human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of restraint configuration on crack formation due to shrinkage-and-creep-induced volumetric change in unbonded post-tensioned slabs. The first part of this study focuses on the comparison of existing shrinkage and creep calculation models that are used to predict the volume-changing behavior of concrete. The second part of this study presents the finite element analysis of a series of architectural configuration prototypes subjected to shrinkage and creep, which comprise unbonded post-tensioned slabs with various restraint configurations. The shrinkage and creep effects were simulated in the analysis by imposing strains obtained from one selected calculation model. The results suggest that a slab up to 300 ft. (90 m) in length does not require a closure strip if it is unrestrained by perimeter walls, and that the most effective restraint crack mitigation strategy for a slab restrained by perimeter walls is a partial wall release.

  • This paper presents nonlinear vibration analysis of a composite cylindrical shell. The core of the shell is made of functionally graded (FG) porous materials and layers is fabricated of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced nanocomposites. To increase the accuracy of results, neutral surface position is considered. First-order shear deformation theory is used as displacement field to derive the basic relations of equation motions. In addition, von-Karman nonlinear strains are employed to account geometric nonlinearity and to enhance the results' precision, the exact position of the neutral surface is considered. To governing the partial equations of motion, the Hamilton's principle is used. To reduce the equation motions into a nonlinear motion equation, the Galerkin's approach is employed. After that the nonlinear motion equation is solved by multiple scales method. Effect of various parameters such as volume fraction and distribution of CNTs along the thickness directions, different patterns and efficiency coefficients of porous materials, geometric characteristics and initial conditions on nonlinear to linear ratio of frequency is investigated.

Role of Mesophyll Morphology in Determination of Leaf Photosynthesis in Field Grown Soybeans (포장생육대두의 엽광합성과정에서 엽육세포 형태의 역할)

  • Photosynthetic variation in field grown soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv Hodgson78] was studied in relation to leaf anatomical variation. Variations in mesophyll morphology were accentuated by manipulating source and sink size. At R3 stage, two treatments were started: one was thinning and continu-ous debranching(6. 5 plants rather than 26 plants per m of row and remaining plants were debranched weekly), and the other was continuous partial depodding (allowing only one pod to develop at each mainstem node). Gas exchange characteristics, mesophyll cell volume and surface area per unit leaf surface, and microclimatic parameters were measured on the intact terminal leaflet at the 10th node. Observations were made 5 times with 3 to 4 day intervals starting R4 stage. Two models were used to compute leaf photosynthetic rates: one considered no effect of mesophyll morphology on photosynthesis, and the other considered potential effects of variations in mesophyll cell volume and surface area on diffusion and biochemical processes. Seventy nine percent of total photosynthetic variations observed in the experiment was explained by the latter, while 69% of the same variations was explained by the former model. By incorporating the mesophyll morphology concept, the predictability was improved by 14.6% in the field condition. Additional Index Words: photosynthesis model, leaf anatomy, Glycine max (L.) The Experimental Study on Antithrombotic Effect of Heanggyonghonghwatang (행경홍화탕(行俓紅花湯)의 항혈전(抗血栓) 효과(效果)에 대(對)한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • Purpose : The Purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of antithrombotic activities of Haenggyonghonghwatang (HGHHT). Methods : Measured the effect which was given to blood flow rate through the regular volume of glass tube after the blood was diluted five times with ACD soulution. Antithrombotic effect was calculated as a percentage of the experimental animal figure protected from the paralysis of hind legs or death of the mouse that is caused from the administration of platelet aggregation regent. Each of the groups consisted in 8 mice, was divided into Normal, Control, and HGHHT. All of these 3 group were supplied a saline solution and after an hour the control group brought the dextran extravasated blood. Also the HGHHT group was dosed to the experimental mice with Oral Zonde one day before the experiment. After that, the mice were abstained from food. And then we gave a measured amount of it before an hour. Finally, it gave rise to dextran extravasated blood as well as the Control group. Results : The results were obtained as follows. HGHHT inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ADP and epinephrine significantly as compared with the control group. HGHHT showed fibrinolytic activity insignificantly as compared with the control group. HGHHT increased blood flow rate significantly as compared with the control group in vitro, but insignificantly as compared with the control group in vivo. HGHHT inhibited pulmonary embolism induced by collagen and epinephrine(inhibitive rate 50%). HGHHT increased number of platelet, fibrinogen amount and shortened prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time significantly as compared with the control group in thrombus model induced by dextran. Conclusion : HGHHT is effective antithrombotic activity from experimental result.

Simulated occlusal adjustments and their effects on zirconia and antagonist artificial enamel

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of occlusal adjustments on the surface roughness of yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) and wear of opposing artificial enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-five Y-TZP slabs from each brand (Lava, 3M and Bruxzir, Glidewell Laboratories) with different surface conditions (Control polished - CPZ; Polished/ground - GRZ; Polished/ground/repolished - RPZ; Glazed - GZ; Porcelain-veneered - PVZ; n=5) were abraded (500,000 cycles, 80 N) against artificial enamel (6 mm diameter steatite). Y-TZP roughness (in ${\mu}m$) before and after chewing simulation (CS) and antagonist steatite volume loss (in $mm^3$) were evaluated using a contact surface profilometer. Y-TZP roughness was analyzed by three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and steatite wear by two-way ANOVA and Tukey Honest Difference (HSD) (P=.05). RESULTS. There was no effect of Y-TZP brand on surface roughness (P=.216) and steatite loss (P=.064). A significant interaction effect (P<.001) between surface condition and CS on Y-TZP roughness was observed. GZ specimens showed higher roughness after CS (before CS - $3.7{\pm}1.8{\mu}m$; after CS - $13.54{\pm}3.11{\mu}m$), with partial removal of the glaze layer. Indenters abraded against CPZ ($0.09{\pm}0.03mm^3$) were worn more than those abraded against PVZ ($0.02{\pm}0.01mm^3$) and GZ ($0.02{\pm}0.01mm^3$). Higher wear caused by direct abrasion against zirconia was confirmed by SEM. CONCLUSION. Polishing with an intraoral polishing system did not reduce the roughness of zirconia. Wear of the opposing artificial enamel was affected by the material on the surface rather than the finishing technique applied, indicating that polished zirconia is more deleterious to artificial enamel than are glazed and porcelain-veneered restorations.

Treatment of BG-1 Ovarian Cancer Cells Expressing Estrogen Receptors with Lambda-cyhalothrin and Cypermethrin Caused a Partial Estrogenicity Via an Estrogen Receptor-dependent Pathway

  • Synthetic pyrethroids (SPs) are the most common pesticides which are recently used for indoor pest control. The widespread use of SPs has resulted in the increased exposure to wild animals and humans. Recently, some SPs are suspected as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and have been assessed for their potential estrogenicity by adopting various analyzing assays. In this study, we examined the estrogenic effects of lambda-cyhalothrin (LC) and cypermethrin (CP), the most commonly used pesticides in Korea, using BG-1 ovarian cancer cells expressing estrogen receptors (ERs). To evaluate the estrogenic activities of two SPs, LC and CP, we employed MTT assay and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in LC or CP treated BG-1 ovarian cancer cells. In MTT assay, LC ($10^{-6}M$) and CP ($10^{-5}M$) significantly induced the growth of BG-1 cancer cells. LC or CP-induced cell growth was antagonized by addition of ICI 182,720 ($10^{-8}M$), an ER antagonist, suggesting that this effect appears to be mediated by an ER-dependent manner. Moreover, RT-PCR results showed that transcriptional level of cyclin D1, a cell cycle-regulating gene, was significantly up-regulated by LC and CP, while these effects were reversed by co-treatment of ICI 182,780. However, p21, a cyclin D-ckd-4 inhibitor gene, was not altered by LC or CP. Moreover, $ER{\alpha}$ expression was not significantly changed by LC and CP, while down-regulated by E2. Finally, in xenografted mouse model transplanted with human BG-1 ovarian cancer cells, E2 significantly increased the tumor volume compare to a negative control, but LC did not. Taken together, these results suggest that LC and CP may possess estrogenic potentials by stimulating the growth of BG-1 ovarian cancer cells via partially ER signaling pathway associated with cell cycle as did E2, but this estrogenic effect was not found in in vivo mouse model.

The effect of Picibanil sclerotherapy for benign neck cysts (양성 경부 낭종에서의 Picibanil(OK-432)을 이용한 경화치료 효과)

  • Background and Objectives: In most cases of benign neck cysts, surgical excision has been considered as treatment of choice. However, sometimes complete excision is very difficult, and recurrences has been occured due to insufficient surgery frequently. In this point of view, non-surgical treatment has been attempted with sclerosing agents such as picibanil(OK-432). In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of picibanil sclerotherapy for benign neck cysts. Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed 53 patients(27 males, 26 females) who had undergone sclerotherapy with picibanil for benign neck cysts such as ranula, lymphangioma, thyroglossal duct cyst and branchial cyst. Information was gathered with respected to age, sex, number of injections, side effect and outcome of treatment. All patients were treated with intralesional aspiration of cystic contents and injection of picibanil, and followed on neck ultrasonography or neck CT. Results: 53 patients received sonoguided sclerotherapy using picibanil(OK-432). 31 patients(41.3%) showed total shrinkage, near total shrinkage(more than 90% of volume) in 7 patients(9.3%), marked shrinkage(more than 70%) in 5 patients(6.6%) and partial shrinkage(less than 70%) in 17 patients. 15 patients(20%) reaveled no response and 8 patients showed recurrences with repeated sclerotherapy. The side effects of therapy were observed by symptoms such as fever, localized pain and odynophagia. However, these complications disappeared after several days in all cases. Conclusions: We recognized that picibanil(OK-432) sclerotherapy for benign neck cyst is a safe and effective procedures as a primary treatment before considering surgery.
