  • A numerical model using Hybrid Element Method(HEM) is presented for the prediction of wave agitations in a harbor which are induced by the intrusion and transformation of incident short-period waves. A linear mild-slope equation including bottom friction is used as the governing equation and a partial absorbing boundary condition is used on solid boundaries. Functional derived in the present paper is based on the Chen and Mei(1974)'s concept which uses finite element net in the inner region and analytical solution of Helmholtz equation in the outer region. Final simultaneous equations are solved using the Gaussian Elimination Method. The model appears to be reasonably good from the comparison of numerical calculation with hydraulic experimental results of short-wave diffraction through a breakwater gap(Pos and Kilner, 1987). The problem of requring large computational memory could be overcome using 8-noded isoparametric elements.

  • The wetlands have functions those were retention of diverse biota, purification of water quality, control of climate and flood, eco-tourism and supply of agricultural water, and that was the ecosystem of high biodiversity as the zone of transition between inland and water. Therefore, this study showed the conservation and management plan by analyzing in the abiotic and biotic environment of forest swamp, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The results were as follows. Examining the management plan of the abiotic environment, there will need to establish the hydrological plan in continuous expediting the supply of water to maintain a humid soil of swamp, and to try to find the organic farming, use of low toxic agrichemicals and so on to prevent occurring a non-point source pollutants. To prevent changing the flowing of ground water and inflow of earth and sand in modifying the land character, there will be needed to restrict the construction of farmland and slope around swamp. To manage the biotic environment, there needed to offer the habitat by removing the regular interval and individual of a dead tree, and to improve the growth environment of vegetation. Because the naturalized plants disturb the natural vegetation, they will be removed. The afforested trees like Robinia pseudoacacia and Amorpha truticosa will be renewed to prevent the heterogeneity of landscape ecology, and the active conservation plan on wetland species will be established. As this study was carried out to study on the partial swamp, Gyeongsanbuk-do, the ecological environments distributing a swamp in Korea show a some problem. In the future, the study will accomplish to study the accurately and objectively ecological environment and management of a swamp by analyzing the extensive sites.

  • This study was conducted to find out the physical properties and soil shearing strength reinforcement effect of herbaceous plants for the slope revegetation works. Two native plants(Pennisetum alopecuroides and Miscanthus sinensis) were used for this experiment, because they have excellent seed germination rates without preconditioning, and grow naturally around rivers. To identify the physical properties, the partial dry weight of plants were investigated. To identify the soil shearing strength reinforcement effect, the respective soil shearing strengths of the control soils, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Miscanthus sinensis samples were measured. Also, we did a correlation analysis to examine the relation of shearing strength to plant features. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The average dry weight of Pennisetum alopecuroides samples consists of 52.36% above ground and 47.64% at root. And in dry weight, 78.24% of it's root distributes within 10 cm in soil depth. Meanwhile the average dry weight of Miscanthus sinensis samples consists of 52.91% above ground and 47.09% at root. And in dry weight, 82.95% of it's root distributes within 10 cm in soil depth. 2. The results of correlation analysis showed that for both Pennisetum alopecuroides and Miscanthus sinensis, it could not be said that there was any correlation between shearing strength and plant characteristics, and statistically they were not meaningful. 3. In the shearing strength test with control soils, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Miscanthus sinensis as subjects, the differences in shearing strength measurement results were modest, and the order was shown as control soils < Pennisetum alopecuroides < Miscanthus sinensis, so the soil shearing strength reinforcement effect by the Pennisetum alopecuroides and the Miscanthus sinensis on loamy sand at river banks surface was confirmed.

  • The main goal of this study is to develop a multi-metric fishway assessment model (Mm-FA) and evaluate the efficiency of fishway. The Mm-FA model has three major fishway components with nine metrics: structural characteristics, hydraulic/hydrologic features, and biological attributes. The model was developed for diagnosing and assessing fishway efficiency and tested to Juksan Weir at the Yeongsan River Watershed. Structural characteristics of fishway included slope of the fishway (M1), ratios of fishway width to stream width (M2), and the proportion of orifice clogging and orifice size (M3). Hydraulic/hydrologic characteristics included depth of fishway entrance head (M4), depth of exit tail (M5), and current velocity of inner fishway (M6). Biological characteristics included fish species ratio of inner fishway to upper-lower weir (M7), fish length distribution (M8), and the proportion of migratory fish species to the total number of species (M9). Overall, the assessment of fishway efficiency showed the total score of the Mm-FA model was 25 in the Juksan Weir, indicating "good condition" by the criteria of the five-level classification system. The Mm-FA model may be used as a key tool for the assessment of fishway efficiency, especially on the 16 weirs constructed for the "Four Rivers Restoration Project" after a partial calibration of Mm-FA model.

  • This paper presents a dual-algorithm search method (GWO-GSO) combining grey wolf optimization (GWO) and golden-section optimization (GSO) to realize maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic (PV) systems. First, a modified grey wolf optimization (MGWO) is activated for the global search. In conventional GWO, wolf leaders possess the same impact on decision-making. In this paper, the decision weights of wolf leaders are automatically adjusted with hunting progression, which is conducive to accelerating hunting. At the later stage, the algorithm is switched to GSO for the local search, which play a critical role in avoiding unnecessary search and reducing the tracking time. Additionally, a novel restart judgment based on the quasi-slope of the power-voltage curve is introduced to enhance the reliability of MPPT systems. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can track the global maximum power point (MPP) swiftly and reliably with higher accuracy under various conditions.

  • A numerical model has been used for the prediction of wave agitations in a harbor which are induced by the intrusion and transformation of incident waves. Based on linear wave theory a mild-slope equation has been used. A partial absorbing boundary condition has been used on solid boundary. Functional has been derived following Chen and Mei(l974)'s technique based on Hybrid Element Method which uses finite discretisation in the inner region and analytical solution of Helmholtz equation in the outer region. Final simultaneous equation has been solved using the Gaussian Elimination Method. Helmholtz natural period and second peak period of seiche in Donghae Harbor coincide very well with the results from numerical calculation. Computed amplification factors show good agreement, especially when the reflection coefficient on solid boundary is 0.99, with those of measurements.

  • In this study. respiratory efforts were monitored by the change of pulse transit time (PTT) which is related with the arterial pressure PTT is the time interval between the peak of R wave in ECG and the maximal slope point of photoplethysmogram(PPG). Biosignals, ECG and finger photoplethysmogram(PPG), were converted to digital data, and PTT was evaluated in personal computer with every heart beat. Results were presented as a graph using spline interpolation. The software was implemented in C$\^$++/ as a window-based application program. PTT was periodically changed according to airflow in resting respiration. In the resting respiration, PTT was changed according to the respiratory cycle. The amplitude of PTT fluctuation was increased by deep respiration, and increased by partial airway obstruction. These results suggest that PTT is responsible to respiratory effort which could be evaluated by the pattern of PTT change. And it is expected that PTT could be applied in the monitoring of respiratory effort by noninvasive methods, and is very useful method for the evaluation of respiratory distress.

  • The parents and F$_1$ seeds from the all possible combinations of the diallel crosses among five upland varieties and a low-land variety were grown in green house in winter and also on paddy field in summer. The durations to heading of all F$_1$'s grown in green house at winter were shorter than those of their parents mean. The shorter duration to heading was due to dominace was partial. And the non-allelic gene interaction was not significant. But in case that the F$_1$'s and the parents were grown on paddy-field in summer. the durations to heading of F$_1$'s were various according to the cross combinations and the non-allelic gene interactions were significant.

  • In this paper, a finite element technique is applied to the prediction of the wave resonance phenomena in harbors. The mild-slope equation is used with a partial reflection boundary condition introduced to model the energy dissipating effects on the solid boundary. For an efficient modeling of the radiation condition at infinity, a new infinite element is developed. The shape function of the infinite element is derived from the asymptotic behavior of the first kind of the Hankel's function in the analytical boundary series solutions. For the computational efficiency, the system matrices of the element are constructed by performing the relevant integrations in the infinite direction analytically. Comparisons with the results from experiments and other solution methods show that the present model gives fairly good results. Numerical experiments are also carried out to determine the proper distance to the infinite elements from the mouth of the halter, which directly affect the accuracy and efficiency of the solution.

  • Unidirectional single-mode operation of a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser with a planar semimonolithic ring cavity has been demostrated at 1064 nm. The semimonolithic cavity consists of a laser active medium placed in a magnetic field, a crystal quartz plate, and an output coupling mirror. They form an optical diode by acting each part as a Faraday rotator, a reciprocal polarization rotator and a partial polarizer, respectively. An eigenpolarization theory for the cavity configuration was presented and losses for the eigenmodes were calculated. A pump-limited single-mode output power of 155 mW and a slope efficiency of 17% were obtained when the laser was pumped by a 1.2 W, 809 nm diode-laser. A laser linewidth of less than 100 kHz is inferred from a beat note frequency spectrum between two identical laser systems and continous single-mode tuning range was more than 2 GHz.
