  • In order to investigate the nozzle - rotor interactions and the effect of partial admission, the flows in supersonic turbine rotor cascades with a nozzle have been computed. Extensive computations of partial admission supersonic turbines provide the shock structures and flow patterns in the nozzle and rotor. The governing equations were discretized with Euler implicit method in time and 2nd-order upwind scheme of FVM in space. The $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model was utilized to describe the turbulent flow field. It is clearly shown that the nozzle flow is highly affected by the shocks or expansion waves propagated from the rotor leading edge. And the rotor flow is also affected by the shocks or wakes originated from the nozzle.

  • Aerodynamic shape design of a partial admission turbine using CFD has been performed. Two step approaches are adopted in this study. Firstly, two-dimensional blade shape is optimized using CFD and genetic algorithm. Initially, the turbine cascade shape is represented by four design parameters. By controlling the design parameters as variables, the non-gradient search is analyzed for obtaining the maximum efficiency. The final two-dimensional blade proved to have a more blade power than the initial blade. Secondly, the three-dimensional CFD analysis including the nozzle, rotor and stator has been conducted. To avoid a heavy computational load due to an unsteady calculation, the frozen rotor method is implemented in steady calculation. The frozen rotor method can detect a variation of the flow-field dependent upon the blade's circumferential position relative to the nozzle. It gives a better idea of wake loss mechanism starting from the lip of the nozzle than the mixing plane concept. Finally, the combination of two and three dimensional design method of the partial admission turbine in this study has proven to be a robust tool in development phase.

  • A numerical flow analysis has been performed on the partial admission turbine of KARI turbopump to support the aerodynamic and structural dynamic assessments. The flow-field in a partial admission turbine is essentially three dimensional and unsteady because of a tip clearance and a finite number of nozzles. Therefore the mixing plane method is generally not appropriate. To avoid heavy computational load due to an unsteady three dimensional calculation, a frozen rotor method was implemented in steady calculation. It adopted a rotating frame in the grid block of a rotor blade by adding some source terms in governing equations. Its results were compared with a mixing plane method. The frozen rotor method can detect the variation of flow-field dependent upon the blade's circumferential position relative to the nozzle. It gives a idea of wake loss mechanism starting from the lip of a nozzle. This wake loss was assumed to be one of the most difficult issues in turbine designers. Thus, the frozen rotor approach has proven to be an efficient and robust tool in design of a partial admission turbine.

  • A supersonic nozzle specially is one of the important part in a supersonic turbine usually adapted the impulse type, because the flow acceleration in the turbine theoretically is done only in the nozzle. The present study deals with numerical flow analysis to investigate the effect of nozzle shapes on the performance characteristics of a partial admission supersonic turbine. The flow analysis was performed for four different nozzle shapes. The shapes of the nozzles are circular, square, straight rectangular and bent rectangular nozzles. The results of the flow analysis showed that the aerodynamic loss of turbine is highly affected by the nozzle shapes, and the partial admission loss is also highly depended on nozzle shapes. Specially, bent rectangular nozzle had the best performance among the nozzle shapes

  • Performance characteristics on a partially admitted small axial-type turbine are experimentally studied with changing design parameters, such as exit flow angles at the nozzle and solidities at the rotor. The tested turbine consists of a single-stage and its mean radius is 35 mm. In this experiment, three different solidities and four different nozzle flow angles are applied to find the optimal design parameter. For a comparison of the turbine performance, the net specific output powers are evaluated. For a 3.4% partial admission rate, the best performance is obtained when the rotor solidity is at 2.18, which is increased to 74% compared to the solidity at full admission.

  • The turbine system composed of a nozzle and a rotor is used to drive turbopumps while gas passes through the nozzle, potential energy is converted to kinematic energy, which forces the rotor blades to spin. In this study, an aerodynamic design of a turbine system is investigated using compressible fluid dynamic theories with some pre-determined design requirements (i.e.,pressure ratio, rotational speed, required power etc.) obtained from a liquid rocket engine (L.R.E.) system design. For simplicity of a turbine system, impulse-type rotor blades for open type L.R.E. have been chosen. Usually, the open-type turbine system requires low mass flow rate compared to the close-type system. In this study, a partial admission nozzle is adopted to maximize the efficiency of the close-type turbine system. A design methodology of the a turbine system has been introduced. Especially, a partial admission nozzle has been designed by means of simple empirical correlations between efficiency and configuration of the nozzle. Finally, a turbine system design for a 10 ton thrust level of L.R.E is presented.

  • Power plant industry has been developed at high-capacity, high-technology, and innovation. Steam turbine became the most useful equipment that dominate more than 50% of all the world electricity production. And developed new materials of the turbine blade and extended length of the turbine last blade brought reform in steam turbine performance upgrade. In this paper, when do partial load driving in high-capacity steam turbine, optimum driving method found whether there is something. In operating steam turbine, there is a lot of loss from secondary wake and throttle of the 1st stage nozzle by the biggest leading factor that load fluctuation affects in high-pressure steam turbine performance. Effect of internal efficiency by 1 stage nozzle is the biggest here, but here fluid flow and flow analysis were not yet examined closely definitely. So, Analyzed design data and acceptance performance test result to applying subcritical pressure drum type 560 MW, supercritical-pressure once through type 500 MW, and 800 MW steam turbines actually. In conclusion, at partial load driving, partial arc admission(PAA) is more efficient than full arc admission(FAA) efficiency. This is judged by because increase being proportional with gross energy of stream that is pressure - available energy if pressure of stream that is flowed in to the turbine increases, available energy becomes maximum and turbine efficiency improves. Therefore, turbine performance is that preview that first stage performance fell if decline is serious in partial load because first stage performance changes according to load.

  • In this paper, numerical analyses of the flow within turbine for geometric conditions such as nozzle shape, length of axial clearance, and chamfer angle of leading edge of blade have been performed to investigate the partial admission supersonic turbine losses. Firstly, flow's bending occurred at axial clearance is depended on nozzle shape. Next, the chamfer angle of leading edge affects the strength of shock generated at the leading edge. Finally the expansion and mixsing of the flow within axial clearance are largely depended upon the length of axial clearance. Therefore it is found that aerodynamic losses of turbine is affected by nozzle shape and chamfer angel and that partial admission losses is depended on nozzle shape and the length of axial clearance.

  • A Sub-kWe small-scale experimental test loop was manufactured to investigate characteristics of the supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle. A high-speed turbo-generator was also designed and manufactured. The designed rotational speed of this turbo-generator was 200,000 rpm. Because of the low expansion ratio through the turbine and low mass flowrate, the rotational speed of the turbo-generator was high. Therefore, it was difficult to select the rotating parts and design the turbine wheel, axial force balance and rotor dynamics in the lab-scale experimental test loop. Using only one channel of the nozzle, the partial admission method was adapted to reduce the rotational speed of the rotor. This was the world's first approach to the supercritical carbon dioxide turbo-generator. A cold-run test using nitrogen gas under an atmospheric condition was conducted to observe the effect of the partial admission nozzle on the rotor dynamics. The vibration level of the rotor was obtained using a gap sensor, and the results showed that the effect of the partial admission nozzle on the rotor dynamics was allowable.

  • In this paper, experimental investigation results of the effect of partial admission ratio on the performance of axial turbine was presented. A supersonic impulse turbine of gas generator cycle liquid rocket engine turbopump was used for the test. for experimental purpose, a nozzle block, in which total 14 number of axi-symmetric convergent-divergent nozzles are arranged circumferentially, was designed and manufactured. Partial admission ratio was controlled by changing the number of active nozzles. High pressure air was used as working medium for the test. The experimental result revealed that the performance of the supersonic impulse turbine does not much affected by the partial admission ratio for supersonic impulse turbine.
