The existential phenomenology in Parse's and Watson's theory of nursing (파시(R. R. Parse)와 왓슨(J. Watson)의 간호이론에서의 실존적 현상학)

  • The purpose of this study is to contribute to a understanding the philosophical foundation of Parse's and Watson's theory of nursing. Parse's human becoming Research Methodology, Principle and main concepts are based on existential phenomenology. And Watson's theory of human care indicate that the optimal method for studying and inquiring theory of trans-personal caring is phenomenological-existential methodology. The chief theme of this study ist to illuminate how ideas and concepts of existential phenomenology are applied to Parse's and watson's theory of nursing. Content of this Study are summarized as follow; 1. Principles, concepts, theoretical structure of Man-Living-Health theory were investigated in Parse's theory of nursing as Human science. 2. Essential assumptions, chief concepts and methodology of human science and human care were investigated in Watson's theory of trans- personal caring. 3. Phenomenological analysis of "Human being" und poetic thinking of truth were described in the context of the Heidegger's fundamental ontology und existential phenomenology. 4. Meaning of existential subjectivity, freedom and choice war interpreted according to Sartre's existential philosophy 5. Phenomenological analysis of perception und function of body were investigated in the context of Merleauponty's existential phenomenology. 6. Ultimately this study provided how ideas and concepts of existential phenomenology war applied to Parse's und Watson's nursing theory und methodology.

Lived Experience of Difficult Times for Young Adult Street Homeless - Application of Parse's Human Becoming Research Method - (청년기에 시작된 거리노숙인의 힘겨운 시기에 대한 체험 - Parse의 인간되어감 연구방법을 적용하여 -)

  • This study was done to identify experience of young adults street homeless aged 20-30s by knowing meaning and structure of empirical phenomena for procedure that how young adults became street homeless according to bio-psycho-social change. Five young adults street homeless were recruited who were on the air of SBS program, 'That why we want to know: young hope on the road-Young adults homeless are increased(Saturday July 26, 2008)', and from monthly magazine published by Homeless Center in Seoul. And phenomenological and heuristic Human Becoming Research Methodology of Parse was applied in this study. Although young adults street homeless made an opportunity for job, the working poor made him street homeless who suffer from social stigma and exclusion, but he struggled for self-support with social care. The quality of life for young adult street homeless depends on the social care under human rights with the bio-psycho-social aspects.

Phenomenological Study on Aging of Women in 40's and 50's - Applying the Parse's Theory - (40~50대 여성의 "나이 들어감(Aging)"에 대한 현상학적 연구 - Parse 이론을 적용하여 -)

  • Purpose: This study was done to explore the essence and meaning of the experience of 'aging', as a process of 40's and 50's women in Korea by applying the Parse's Human Becoming theory (2002). Methods: Data was collected from February to April, 2013, using the phenomenological research method. Data was collected through in-depth informal interview and analyzed following Colaizzi method. After IRB permission and informed consent from the participants, all interviews were recorded with MP3 recorder and transcribed for analysis. Results: Data analysis revealed 112 of meanings, 33 key subject words, 8 subject phrases, and 4 categories. The main themes were elaborated as 'going down' ('Being changed of body and mind', 'Being considered on my identity'), 'going up' ('Being expanded of productive role', 'Being transcendent multi-dimensionally'), 'pausing' ('Becoming more thoughtful about family', 'Looking back'), 'going forward again' ('Age is just a number, 'Contemplating of life and death'). Experiences in aging among women in 40's and 50's enlightened with Parse's theory of Human Becoming in terms of 'going down', 'going up', 'pausing', 'going forward again' appeared simultaneously, rather than consecutively. Conclusion: Women in 40's and 50's require holistic nursing intervention with physical, psychological, socio-economical, and spiritual aspects, rather than focusing on problematic physical symptom relief and prevention of further conditions. It is recommended to develop various nursing intervention considering on different environment, type of experience, and level of human becoming, individually.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed at understanding the nature of the suffering of families with patients in mental health nursing homes and hoped to contribute to the rehabilitation process of those with a chronic mental disorder. Method: Research methodology was based upon Parse's human becoming research methodology. Results: a) Despite the despair the family feels by the violence caused by their now-institutionalized relative, they also realize anew the importance of their role as protectors b) Although they fear social stigmatization they also try to be supportive, out of guilt feelings; c) They regret their severe rearing style and wish to be more sympathetic, d) They find courage and hope through family therapy, which leads to a better understanding of the illness, e) With hopes of rehabilitation, the family members feel happy and go through an emotional release, by sharing the pain with each other. Conclusion: Families of nursing home residents share a focus on the process of human-health-universe. This is a positive,'human-becoming' process with which, based on past feelings of despair, fear, resignation, and pain, one can render meaning into his or her experiences in the present in the pursuit of love, conquest, hope, liberty and success.

The Lived Experience of Suffering of Family with Cancer Patients: Parse's Human Becoming Research Method (암환자 가족의 고통체험 - Parse의 인간되어감 연구방법 -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to discover the structure of the lived experience of suffering of families with cancer patients to develop a theoretical foundation that can be used to reinforce nursing practice for cancer patients and their families. Methods: A qualitative study was performed using Parse's research method. Participants were four families with cancer patients. From February 2009 through April 2010, data were collected via dialogical-engagement between participants and the researcher and analyzed through the extraction-synthesis and heuristic interpretation processes. Results: The structure was identified as follows. The families' lived experience of suffering was a process through which they experienced a psychological shock of cancer diagnosis and difficulties associated with reshuffled roles among family members, and made efforts to care for the patients. Conclusion: Amidst sadness, pain, anxiety, guilt, fear and agony, the families focused on the human-health-universe aspect and found meanings of their experiences as love, triumphant, responsibility and hope. As such, the study results suggest that the suffering of families with cancer patients is a human becoming process of positive transformation.

Lived Experience of Suffering For Family of Victim with Sewol-ho Ferry Accident: Applied to Parse's Human Becoming Methodology (세월호 사건 피해자 가족의 고통 체험에 관한 연구: Parse의 인간되어감 연구방법을 적용)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to understand Lived Experience of Suffering for family of victim with Sewol-ho ferry accident and to suggest the necessity of mental health occupational therapy regarding of psychological trauma of family of victim. Methods : This study was applied with Parse's Human becoming research method to recognize experience pain for 5 objects losing family with with Sewol-ho ferry accident. According to Parse's research mothod, secondary data, documentary video about experience pain of family of victim with Sewol-ho ferry accident was selected and analyzed. Results : Three core concept for lived experience of suffering of family with victim with Sewol-ho ferry accident as below statements. 1. Despair and sadness losing family, 2. Impotent feeling and guilty conscience breaking down daily life, 3. Seeking relief from suffering for remaining family. Although there were extreme impotent feeling of losing family with Sewol-ho ferry accident, structural conversion presented as process with denial reality which do not want to accept a death in the family and standing for remaining family. The conceptual integration was expressed to powering from valuing and languaging to connection-separation, revealing-concealingl. Conclusion : Family of victim with Sewol-ho ferry accident is losing meaning of life the goal of life with impotent feeling, despair and depression. It is urgently needed for mental health occupational therapy program to restore disruptive everyday activity and participation in community by developing occupational therapy program through meaningful occupation to family of victim.

Lived Experience of Considering Tomorrow among North Korean Refugees (새터민의 내일을 향한 삶의 체험 - Parse의 인간되어감 연구방법론 적용 -)

  • Purpose: The present study was done to discover the structure of universal actual experiences 'Considering tomorrow' of health and quality of life among North Korean refugees in terms of the socio-cultural context of South Korea. Method: The research question was 'what is the structure of the actual experience of 'Considering tomorrow?', which was examined based on the Parse's human becoming research method. Five North Korean adult refugees were recruited from a National Reconciliation Committee in Seoul/Incheon. The data was gathered from dialogues and collected from February, 2006 to November, 2006. Results: The structures found in this study were: 'hope for future life by taking responsibility and having harmony with South Koreans, by forming an integrated identification; having a chance for positive engagement, by attaining human freedom and hope; feeling respected, by assimilating self to the new world; getting freedom back, by facing a new challenge and preparing self for a new social role; overcoming cultural differences with fortified hardiness for survival, by making a decision for a life course with individual growth. In addition, conceptual integration was that 'Considering tomorrow is transforming the enabling-limiting values'. Conclusion: Health professionals need to know North Korean refugees' psychological difficulties, expectations of treatment, help seeking behavior, and expectations from mainstream culture. Additionally, understanding North Korean refugees' needs for reality, health education and a multi-disciplinary team approach are necessary to improve their health.

Job-related Difficulties of Charge Nurses - Applied Parse's Human Becoming Research Method - (주임간호사가 경험하는 직무와 관련된 어려움 - Parse의 인간되어감 연구방법 적용 -)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the core concepts and structure of difficult experiences of charge nurses in general hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from August 1 to September 5, 2014. Participants were 10 nurses from general hospitals in D and S cities. Parse research method was applied to examine lived experiences of the participants. The procedure of study was based on dialogical engagement and data were analyzed by extraction-synthesis and interpreted heuristically. The research question was "Would you tell me about your difficult experiences as a charge nurse?" Results: Job-related difficulties of the charge nurses were conflicts due to ineffective communication, heavy workload, not feeling respected, role conflict, and struggling to overcome difficulties with sense of responsibility to the work. The conceptual integration was: to be in the process of being originated and transformed through connecting-separating and enabling-limiting with valuing. Conclusion: Structural conversion of these concepts reveals that charge nurses suffer from the job-related difficulties identified in this study, but they endure to proceed with a sense of mission. It is suggested that supportive interventions should be made to let charge nurses express their feelings, identify their needs, and develop self-care or coping skills for themselves.

Conflict Experience as an Occupational Therapist: Parse's Theory of Human Becoming (작업치료사로서의 갈등 경험에 관한 연구: Parse의 인간되어감 연구방법 적용)

  • Objective : Commonly experienced as an occupational therapist to reveal the meaning of conflict, development by providing information on the quality of official development plan for therapists were willing to contribute. Method : In this study using Parse's human becoming method to collect and analyze data. Participants to understand purpose of the study's researchers and that can be spoken honestly their experience through dialogue were selected eight people as a clinical occupational therapist. Conversation period January-February 2012 was, at the time of about 30-40 minutes, Every conversation is more than three times for each participant were conducted. Result : Experience of occupational therapists, occupational therapy as a conflict of identity confusion and lack of awareness, feeling that comes from a poor working environment and social life, mental conflict, payroll issues to worry about, but concerns about the treatment of the future with hope and effort in the process was an experience. However, external, internal conflicts despite the uneasy reality academic experience for self-development and growth, and the development towards a positive future was out over it. Conclusion : Away from the internal and external conflicts therapists, occupational therapy and establish the identity of satisfaction and quality of care for the treatment to improve their physical and social environment, continuous improvement is necessary.

Lived Experience of Suffering for Victims of Torture : among the suspected espionage agents under the military government (고문폭력 생존자가 반추한 고문의 고통 체험 : 군사정권시대 간첩혐의 희생자를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand suffering of torture for victims with suspicion of espionage under the military government in Korea by knowing meaning and structure of empirical phenomena. Methods is to applied to Phenomenological and heuristic Human Becoming Methodology, and the subjects of this study are text for three tortured victims. Results is the structure that the victims accepted their act of espionage under the torture and horror, living with retribution from heaven, surviving pressured times, and fighting for human rights upon release from prison. The conceptual integration of relationship issues were: valuing, imaging, languaging with powering and transforming under the process of revealing-concealing and enabling-limiting. Finally, discussion and practical meaning was reviewed.
