  • Bar fractions depend on the properties of host galaxies. However, the observational studies did not provide consistent tendency. We investigated the bar fractions and their dependence on properties of host galaxies using three bar classifications: visual inspection, ellipse fitting method and Fourier analysis from a volume-limited sample of 1,698 disk galaxies brighter than Mr=-15.2 within z = 0.01 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7). We found two causes to make the discrepancy in previous studies. One is caused by the difficulty in automatically identifying bars for bulge-dominated galaxies. In particular, ellipse fitting methods could miss early-type barred galaxies when a large bulge weakens the transition between a bar and disk. The other is caused by the difference in the correlation between the bar types and host morphology for strong bars and weak bars. Strong bars are preponderant in early-type spirals which are red, bulge-dominated and highly concentrated, whereas weak bars are frequent in late-type spirals which are blue, disk-dominate and less-concentrated. Therefore, how much weak bars they contain affects the trend of bar fraction on host galaxy properties. We also discuss the effect of host properties on the formation, evolution, and destruction of bars.

  • We obtain the mathematical model of the hard disk drive actuator system the system response data of the finite element analysis or experimental results. The model is base on the Rayleigh-Ritz method to approximate the dynamic response of the actuator system. The basic idea is to use the curve-fit technique to obtain the approximation coefficients. It allows the dynamic analysis of the actuator system without resort to the repetitive finite element modeling work. Even though the dynamic characteristics of the system of the system are affected somewhat by the structural modification and the change of the material properties, we can use the modified size and dynamic properties of the actuator system in the mathematical model to some extent. In this study, we express the mathematical model of the simplified rectangular plate first and then proceed to the actual hard disk drive actuator system.

  • In generally, under the influence of over-pressure drop, serious problems such as cavitation, choked flow, flashing and vibration has been coming around the tilting disk check valve. A PIV experiment to examine the cause of energy loss has been performed and the improvement configuration of valve seat based on this visualization results is proposed. In the visualization results, flows in the piping system became instability under the influence of the shape of boss. This unstable flows induces sudden pressure drop in the piping system. So, we change the configuration of boss as a streamlined design to be stabilized the flows. A pressure measurement has been performed to know that the influence of the configuration change. In result, the rate of pressure loss reduction is about 22% at the position of No. 2 and 24.2% at the position of No. 6 in comparison with pre-improved shape.

  • CP steel was developed to reduce the weight and increase the strength of car body. When it was welded using state-of-the-art disk laser welding, the effected of boron on the microstructure and hardness were investigated. Welding power was fixed at 3.5kW and welding speeds were 4,8 and 12m/min. Full penetration occurred in welding speed of 12m/min and weld bead was almost unchanged with boron contents. But the welding speed increased, the upper and lower bead were narrowed. In a welding speed of more than 8m/min, underfill defects were formed on the bead bottom. The hardness of weld zone was somewhat fluctuation in fusion zone and HAZ showed the highest hardness values. The hardness of each region showed little change with the boron contents, and softening phenomenon occurred in the HAZ near the base metal regardless of the boron contents.

  • Brake-induced vibrations of a vehicle such as brake judder are determined by the excitation of brake torque variations and by their transfer to the driver's contact points via suspension, body and steering system. The formation of brake torque variation is mainly determined by static and dynamic disk thickness variations. The vibration transfer from the excitation by brake torque variation to the perception by the driver depends on the kinematic and dynamic behaviour of the components in the transfer path. Optimization of the judder performance can be achieved either by minimizing the excitation or by reduction of the judder sensitivity of the vehicle. In this paper, the optimization process of a front rotor is suggested to reduce brake judder considering the cooling performance of the rotor, the judder sensitivity of the vehicle and durability of the rotor.

  • This paper represents a ultra precision rotational device where the smooth impact drive mechanism(SIDM) is utilized as a driving mechanism. Linear motions of piezoelectric elements are converted to the rotational motion of disk by frictional forces generated between the rotational disk and the friction bars which are attached to the piezoelectric elements. This device was designed to drive a rotational disk using slip-slip motion mechanism based on stick-slip motion mechanism. Experimental results show that the angular velocity was increased in proportion to the magnitude of supplied voltage to piezoelectric element. In our device, the smooth rotational motion was obtained when the driving frequency has been reached to 500Hz under the driving voltage of 100V. The amount of step movement has been revealed to be $3.44{\times}10^{-4}$ radian.

  • This research investigates the electromechanical characteristics of a spindle motor in a free-falling mobile hard disk drive before unexpected shock. Electromechanical simulation includes a time-stepping finite element analysis of the magnetic field in a speed controlled brushless DC motor and dynamic analysis of the stationary and rotating part linked by the fluid dynamic bearing under the free-falling condition. Analysis results show that the dynamic characteristics of the rotating spindle system during free-falling state have an effect on the relative motion between the stationary and rotating part of HDD. It results from the variation of reaction force in the bearing area due to the gravity force exerted on the rotating part of HDD, and the free-falling condition can be detected by observing the signal of the spindle motor and disk-head interface without using an accelerometer.

  • The brake judder is a phenomenon that the steering wheel is abnormally vibrating when the car is braked at a high speed. It is classified by the cold and the hot judder. The former is generated due to the initial uneven disk surface and the latter is resulted from the uneven heat spots on disc surface by repeatedly braking. There are two ways to reduce the judder. One is to control vibration by modification of the disk shapes and pad ingredients. The other is to improve modal characteristics of the suspension system. The latter approach is used in this research. In this paper, the real vehicle test and computer simulation are considered to systematically understand the judder phenomenon of the vehicle. The Macpherson strut suspension is employed. Especially, the judder sensitivity is calculated based on design sensitivity analysis. A bush stiffness was reworked and braking test was done to verify the sensitivity result. The judder reduction by the mode control was verified.
