The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, manufacturing process and new materials development for solving the fatigue fracture problem attendant upon high strength of suspension of automobile are actively advanced. In this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in high temperatures($100^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C,\;180^{\circ}C$) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings. (1) Compressive residual stress is decreased in high temperature, that is, with increasing temperature. (2) The effect of compressive residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior in high temperature is increased below ${\Delta}K=17{\sim}19MPa\sqrt{m}$. The fatigue crack growth rate is increased with increasing temperature. The fatigue life is decreased with increasing temperature. (3) The dependence of temperature and compressive residual stress on the parameters C and m in Paris' law formed the formulas such as equations (3),(4),(5),(6),(7),(8),(9),(10). (4) It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compress residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.
In this paper, the effect of the compressive residual stresses which were obtained under the various shot velocities of shot balls on the fatigue behaviors of a spring steel, were investigated. The examination of CT specimen test were executed with the materials(JISG SUP9) which are being commonly used for the springs of automotive vehicles. As a result, the optimal shot velocity of shot balls were acquired considering the peak values of the compressive residual stresses on the surface of specimen and effect on the speed of the fatigue crack propagation da/dN in stage II and the threshold stress intensity factor range Δ$K_{th}$ in stage I. Also the material constant C and the crack propagation index m in the formula of paris law da/dN= C $({\Delta}K^m)$ were suggested in this work to estimate the dependency on the shot velocity.

The loss of strength in a structure as a result of cyclic loads over a period of life time is an important phenomenon for the life-cycle analysis. Service loads are accentuated at the areas of stress concentration, mainly at the connection of components. Structural components unavoidably are affected by defects such as surface scratches, surface roughness and weld defects of random sizes, which usually occur during the manufacturing and handling process. These defects are shown to have an important effect on the fatigue life of the structural components by promoting crack initiation sites. The value of equivalent initial flaw size (EIFS) is calculated by using the back extrapolation technique and the Paris law of fatigue crack growth from results of fatigue tests. We try to analyze the effect of EIFS distribution in a multiple site damage (MSD) specimen by using the extended finite element method (XFEM). For the analysis, fatigue tests were conducted on the centrally-cracked specimens and MSD specimens.
The fatigue cracks initiate and propagate in the Armored Vehicle Launch Bridge (AVLB) components, especially like the splice doubler angle, splice plate, and bottom chord, due to the cyclic loading by repeated AVLB-launchings and tank-crossings. In this study, laboratory fatigue tests were conducted on six aluminum 2014-T6, four aluminum 7050-T76511, and four ASTM A36 steel compact-tension specimens to evaluate the crack growth behavior of the materials used for the components. The experimental results provide the relationship (Paris Law) between crack growth rate, da/dn, and stress intensity range, ${\Delta}K$, whose material dependent constants C and m can later be used in the life estimation of the components. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor, K, of the components with cracks. Because of the complexity of loading conditions and component geometry, several assumptions and simplifications are made in the FEM modeling. The FEM results, along with the results obtained from laboratory fatigue tests, are then utilized to estimate critical crack length and remaining life of the components.
The crack which is discovered in various structures and machine elements is multi-cracks. Multi-cracks may cause serious problems because they grow individually, and coalesce into one and it leads to fracture. Fatigue tests have been carried out to study the growth and coalescence behavior of multi-surface-cracks initiated at the semicircular surface notch in type 304 stainless steel at elevated temperature. The results are as follows; When multi-surface-cracks are lying on the surface of material, the major surface crack has greater influence on the fatigue life than the subcracks. The aspect ratio of multi-surface-cracks is lower than that of single crack because of the interaction and coalescence of surface cracks. Crack growth shape turns to semiellipse from the semicircle notch. After coalescence, the surface crack length increases rapidly, and it leads to fracture. Further, the slope transition of Paris law was found in the da/dN-$\Delta$K$_1$ plots.
The effects of aging of PSF/AS4 laminates on fatigue was studied using the new energy release rate analysis. The analysis by the variational mechanics has been useful in providing fracture mechanics interpretation of matrix microcracking in cross-ply laminates. This paper describes the changes of the critical energy release rate (microcracking toughness) according to the aging period under fatigue loading. The master plot by modified Paris-law gives a characterization of a material system's resistance to microcrack formation. PSF $[0/90_{s}]_{s}$ laminates were aged at four different temperature based on the glass transition temperature for 0 to 60 days. At all temperatures, the toughness decreased with aging time. The decrease of the toughness at higher temperature was faster than at lower temperature. To assess the effects of aging on fatigue, the unaged laminates were compared with the laminates which had been aged for 60 days at 170$^{\circ}C$ near 180 $^{\circ}C$ t$_g$. The slope of dD/dN versus ${\Delta}G_m$. of the aged laminates was lower than that of the unaged laminates. There was a significant shift of the aged data to formation of microcracks at the lower values of ${\Delta}G_m$.

In this paper, an analysis of fatigue crack growth behavior from a statistical point of view has been carried out. Fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on sixteen pre-cracked compact tension (CT) specimens of the pressure vessel (SPV50) steel in controlled identical load and environmental conditions. The assessment of the statistical distribution of fatigue crack growth experimental data obtained from SPV50 steel was studied and also the correlation of the parameter C and m in the Paris-Erdogan law was discussed. The probability distribution function of fatigue crack growth life seems to follow the 3-parameter Weibull. The fatigue crack growth rate seems to follow the 3-parameter Weibull and the log-normal distribution. The coefficient of variation (COV) of fatigue crack growth life was observed to decrease as the crack grows. Fatigue crack growth rate data shows a normal distribution for both m and logC. A strong negative linear correlation exists between the coefficient C and the exponent m.

In the present study, a numerical model for probability analysis of optimal design of fatigue non-uniform crack growth behaviour of a cracked aluminium 2024 T3 plate repaired with a bonded composite patch is investigated. The proposed 3D numerical model has advanced in literatures, which gathers in a unique study: problems of reliability, optimization, fatigue, cracks and repair of plates subjected to tensile loadings. To achieve this aim, a finite element modelling is carried out to determine the evolution of the stress intensity factor at the crack tip Paris law is used to predict the fatigue life for a give n crack. To have an optimal volume of our patch satisfied the practical fatigue life, a procedure of optimization is proposed. Finally, the probabilistic analysis is performed in order to a show that optimized patch design is influenced by uncertainties related to mechanical and geometrical properties during the manufacturing process.
In characteristics of fatigue crack propagation, it is important that fatigue life is affected by crack closure phenomenon in thin sheet Al alloy. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation in constant loading condition for sheet Al 2024-T3 alloy of two sort of thickness and identify the difference of fatigue life in thin sheet specimen comparing experimental results of thin sheet specimen and relatively thick sheet specimen under same fatigue loading condition. In applying fatigue related material constants from fatigue crack propagation analysis, we attempt to operate the fatigue life estimating process of thin sheet specimen by modified Paris‘ law considering crack closure phenomenon and analyze the experimental and prediction results of fatigue life in thin sheet Al alloy.
