Purpose: As a result of dramatic advances in the medical and surgical management of congenital heart disease (CHD), many babies born with cardiac anomalies today can expect to reach adulthood. The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parenting stress and personal resources of mothers of children with CHD. Method: Fifty-one mothers of children with CHD were recruited at the pediatric cardiac outpatient clinic from July 14th to September 25th 2006. Abidin's parenting stress index/short form (PSI/SF) and Brandt and Weinert's personal resource questionnaire (PRQ) were used. PSI has 3 sub-concepts; parental role distress, dysfunctional parent-child interaction, and difficult child. PRQ has 4 sub-concepts; intimacy, social integration, worth, and assistance. Data were analyzed using SPSS 13.0 version. Results: Correlation analysis showed that parenting stress was significantly related to 'intimacy', 'social integration', and 'worth' of mothers. Multiple regression analysis showed that parenting stress was significantly related to personal resource of mother and information by internet. Conclusion: Mothers who felt they had supportive friends and family, high self esteem, and social integration reported lower parenting stress. Also, internet may be an effective method to provide information and share experience for mothers of children with CHD.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between parenting stress and depression in mothers of infants and verbal abuse. Methods: The data for this study was collected from 174 mothers of infants 12 to 48 months old who either used one of two pediatric clinics or one kindergarten. The instruments used for this study were a self-report questionnaire, PSI (Parenting Stress Index Short Form by Abidin), BDI (Beck Depression Instrument) and Verbal Abuse Measure. Regression analysis was the statistical method used for data analysis. Results: The mean score for depression in the mothers was 14.7 (range: 2-35), for parenting stress, 81.86 (range: 44-142), and for verbal abuse, 37.9 (range: 25-79). There were significant positive correlations for depression, parenting stress and verbal abuse in the mothers. Significant factors influencing verbal abuse were child domain, parent-child domain. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that there is a need to design interventions and develop programs for depression management and parenting stress for mothers of infants between 12 and 48 months.
This study examined the effect of parenting knowledge and mother-caregiver relationship on maternal parenting stress. The participants in this study consisted of 297 mothers of 1~3 years old children at daycare centers in Daegu, Korea. The participants completed questionnaires on their parenting knowledge, mother-caregiver relationship, and parenting stress. The results indicated that mothers' parenting knowledge and parenting stress were not-significantly related, but mother-caregiver relationship and mothers'parenting stress were significantly related. A close look at the effect of parenting knowledge and mother-caregiver relationship on maternal parenting stress, while maternal parenting knowledge did not influenced directly parenting stress, mother-caregiver relationship was a significant variable predicting mother's parenting stress. In particular, when a mother and caregiver develop a positive relationship, maternal parenting stress was lower. These results seem to indicate that the positive relationship between mother and caregiver is very important.
Purpose: This study examines parenting stress, depression, and Yangsaeng in mothers with cerebral palsy children, providing information that may be helpful in the development of a health intervention program that may improve the lives of the mothers. Methods: The subjects of this study were 124 mothers with cerebral palsy children; the subjects were selected by convenience sampling. The collected data were processed by using the SPSS program and analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation. Results: Parenting stress in mothers with cerebral palsy children was $91.84\pm20.75$, depression was $20.54\pm11.30$, and Yangsaeng was $92.77\pm15.79$ There was a positive relationship between parenting stress and depression. Parenting stress and depression were negatively related with Yangsaeng. Conclusions: The results suggest that Yangsaeng as an oriental health care regimen can lower the level of parenting stress and depression. In this regard, to promote a healthier life for mothers with cerebral palsy children, it would be beneficial to develop a nursing intervention program that incorporates the use of Yangsaeng.
The purpose of the study was to investigate parenting stress of mothers with handicapped children. The study employed an ecological model. Data were collected from 142 mothers of handicapped children enrolled in early childhood education classes at welfare facilities in Seoul, Korea. The main results of the study were as follows: 1. The parenting stress of subject mothers was at a severe level. 2. The hierarchical regression analysis yielded the results that mother's depression(β=.383, p<.001), the degree of child's handicap(β=.307, p<.001), child's age(β=.274, p<.01), and mother's participation at parent education program(β=.176, p<.05) were significant factors in explaining mothers' parenting stress. The research model explained 45% of variance.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between mother's and child's temper and parenting stress. Methods : One hundred twenty healthy mothers (above 20 yrs old) who has a school-aged child (7-11 yrs old) participated after informed consent. The temperament of the children was analyzed by the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory 7-11 (JTCI 7-11) by their mothers. The temperament of the mothers was analyzed by the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised Short (TCI-RS) and the mother's parenting stress was analyzed by the Korean Parenting Stress Index (K-PSI). The relationships between mothers' and child's temperament and parenting stress were assessed using the Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression test. Results : There were significant correlations between maternal temperaments and child's temperaments and maternal parenting stress. There was a positive correlation between mother's harm avoidance characteristic, child's novelty seeking degree and parenting stress. On the other hand, there was a negative correlation between child's persistence and parenting stress. In addition, interactions between child and mother temperament dimensions predicted higher levels of parenting stress. Parenting stress was higher in the group of high mother's harm avoidance with child's high novelty seeking and high mother's harm avoidance with low child's persistence. Conclusions : These results are showing that there are significant relationships between mother and child temperament and parenting stress in mothers with school-aged children.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify degrees of parenting stress, parenting efficacy, parenting behavior and parental satisfaction, and to identify factors influencing parenting satisfaction of mothers who had preschool children. Methods: The research participants were 176 mothers. All of mothers had preschool children, aged 2 to 6 years old, and attended one of 3 day care centers or 2 Kindergartens located in J city. Data were collected by convenience sampling using self-report questionnaires which contained items on general characteristics, parenting stress, parenting efficacy, parenting behavior, and parenting satisfaction. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression. Results: The average level of parenting satisfaction of mothers with preschool children was $5.38{\pm}0.79$. Positive parenting behavior and affective parenting efficacy were verified factors influencing parental satisfaction. These factors accounted for 41.4% of parental satisfaction. Conclusion: The results indicate that positive parenting behavior and affective parenting efficacy have the biggest impact on parental satisfaction. The results of this study provide the basic data for the development of parental education program aimed at improving parental satisfaction of mothers who have preschool children.
Purpose: This study was done to build and test a theoretical model that could be used to explain and predict parenting behavior of mothers with preschool children. Methods: The participants were 298 mothers with preschool children. Data were analyzed using the SAS (Statistical Analysis System) and AMOS (Analysis of Moment Structures) programs. Results: Parenting stress showed a direct effect on parenting satisfaction. Parenting efficacy showed a direct effect on parenting behavior. Parenting stress showed an indirect effect on parenting behavior. Parenting efficacy was found to mediate the relationship between parenting stress and parenting behavior. Income and mother's perfectionism had an impact on parenting behavior. Conclusion: The outcomes of this study indicate the necessity of designing intervention programs that emphasize increasing parenting efficacy in order to increase positive parenting behavior.

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of family related factors (mothers' self-esteem, mothers' parenting stress, mothers' marital satisfaction, fathers' parenting involvement, and social support) on mothers' postpartum depression. The subjects were 797 households that were extracted from the $1^{st}$ wave of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC). The study variables were measured using the survey questionnaires, and analyses of Pearson's correlation and multiple regression were conducted. Results showed that family related factors significantly predicted mothers' postpartum depression. Moreover, the most significant predictor was mothers' parenting stress, followed by marital satisfaction, self-esteem, fathers' parenting involvement, and social support. Study findings indicate that mothers' postpartum depression is attributed to not only personal but also family related factors. Our results suggest importance of parent education and family support along with social support.
