This study analyses the effect of gender on the support and control dimension of the relationship between adolescent children and their parents in 5 countries - Korea, Japan, U.S., Germany, and Sweden. This study predicts that mothers are more supportive and less controlling towards their children than fathers; that parents are more supportive towards their daughters than sons; and that supportive relationship is most pronounced in mother-daughter relations while controlling relationship is pronounced in father-son relations. We used the 2006 multi-national survey data collected by the National Youth Policy Institute for the analysis, selecting the cases in which the youth respondents were born between 1988 and 1993 and were living with both biological parents. All three hypotheses are supported in Korean cases. In the cases of the other nations, the hypotheses are only partially supported. In all the 5 nations, mothers are more supportive towards their children than are fathers. While parents are more supportive towards daughters than towards sons in most countries, the impact of children's gender in producing differences in parental behavior is less profound than the impact of parent's gender. Gender affects the control dimension of the relationship only in Korea and U.S.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Helicopter Parenting Scale (HPS) using a sample of Korean young adults aged 19-34. This study is to expand the previous validation studies that exclusively focused on college students. Method: The survey data came from 1,140 young adults (398 19-24 year olds, 376 25-29 year olds, and 366 30-34 year olds) who had never been married and had at least one living parent. The young adults' perceived helicopter parenting was assessed by 10 items of the HPS for the mother and the father separately. All of the analyses including exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted for three age groups (19-24, 25-29, and 30-34 years) and for the mother and the father separately. Results: We found that three items were problematic for all age groups and for both the fathers' and mothers' helicopter parenting. After removing these three items, confirmatory factor analyses showed that the one-factor model fit our data well and the estimated factor loadings were suitable. The results were consistent throughout the age groups and the parent's gender. We also confirmed criterion-related validity using correlations between paternal and maternal helicopter parenting and three dimensions of parental career expectations indicated a reliable. Conclusion: The Korean version of HPS with seven items was found to be a reliable and valid measure for Korean young adults aged 19-34 years old.
In this paper, a new embedded wavelet packet image coder algorithm is proposed for an effective image coder using correlation between partitioned coefficients. This new algorithm presents parent-child relationship for reducing image reconstruction error using relations between individual frequency sub-bands. By parent-child relationship, every coefficient is partitioned and encoded for the zerotree data structure. It is shown that the proposed wavelet packet image coder algorithm achieves low bit rates and rate-distortion. It also demonstrates higher PSNR under the same bit rate and an improvement in image compression time. The perfect rate control is compared with the conventional method. These results show that the encoding and decoding processes of the proposed coder are simpler and more accurate than the conventional ones for texture images that include many mid and high-frequency elements such as aerial and satellite photograph images. The experimental results imply the possibility that the proposed method can be applied to real-time vision system, on-line image processing and image fusion which require smaller file size and better resolution.
The purpose of this study was to examine the experience of child rearing in the life of school counselors and what this experience signified to them based on the narrative, a qualitative research method. For this study, two women who have at least eight year long experience, who work as school counselors and who have the experience of rearing their children during adolescence were selected as research subjects. They were subjected to interview and the following research results were drawn out. School counselors' child rearing experience was composed by focusing on the time, society and place, which are referred to as the Three-dimensional narrative investigation space. School counselors "discerned" that the experience of getting reared by original family exerts effect on children. After counseling study, they wished to "become a sufficiently good rearer" who strives to cultivate ideal parent-child relations by understanding their children after undergoing the phase of "self-reflection and apology" for discipline and forced attitude. Moreover, they were transforming into "genuine counselor" through experience based insight, and this in turn includes the meaning of "I, who function intactly."
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of home environments, personal factors on prosocial behaviors through analysis on children's sex and age. The data were collected by questionnaire method from 190 elementary school and 102 middle school children in Pusan. The instruments used are the child's prosocial behavior test on the basis of the self report scale by Yang, Jean Sook(1991). Frequency and regression analysis were applied for data analyses. The main results of the study were as follows; (1) Prosocial behaviors were directly influenced by home environments and personal factors on children's prosocial behaviors. Personal factors were stronger than home environments in influencing on children's prosocial behaviors. (2) Girl's prosocial behaviors were influenced by home economic level, parent's educational level, leaderships, the sphere of peer relations, popularity, prosocial behavior experience and maturity of prosocial motive. Boy's prosocial behaviors were influenced by leaderships, the sphere of peer relations, popularity, prosocial behavior experience and maturity of prosocial motive. (3) The effects of home environments and personal factors for prosocial behavior differed accoring to children's age. The more children aged, the less home environment & effective factors influenced.
Emotional expressiveness is a pathway by which parents affect the emotional competence of their children. This study examined how the emotional expressiveness of parents is influenced by the emotional reactions of their children and demographic characteristics within a family context. Data for the present study were from 200 parents in 100 two-parent families who completed self-report questionnaires for emotional expressiveness, children's emotional reactions to stressful situations, and demographics. In preliminary analyses, mothers expressed emotions more frequently than fathers did, and mothers with high expressiveness of positive emotions were more educated and had higher family income. Although fathers' emotional expressiveness was closely related to mothers' expressiveness, none of the demographic factors were related to fathers' expressiveness. When all predictors were considered in hierarchical multiple regressions, family income was the significant predictor for mothers' positive expressiveness, whereas mothers' negative expressiveness were explained by children's emotional reactions, mother education, child sex, the number of siblings, fathers' education, and mothers' time spent with children. When controlled for mothers' expressiveness, fathers' time spent with children was the only significant predictor for fathers' negative expressiveness. The results of this study suggested that parents' emotional expressiveness varied with socioeconomic status. The discussion also examines the gender differences between mothers and fathers in emotional expressiveness, and their relations to children's sex.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the components and content of nursing intervention studies on mother-infant interactions and to present strategies for future studies. Methods: Four electronic databases in the Korean language were searched to identify studies done between January 1998 and December 2011. The search yielded 145 articles. From these articles, 19 studies met the inclusion criteria. Results: Mother-infant interactions in these studies were found to include verbal and non-verbal communication basic for optimal growth and development of the child. Six kinds of interventions for mother-infant interactions were identified as follows: sensory stimulation, education program, whole body massage, kangaroo care, visiting support, and music therapy. Conclusion: Further studies with well designed clinical trials need to be done in the area of child nursing to provide evidence based data for the development of strategies to promote positive mother-infant interactions.

Social services are divided into care services and other support services for the elderly, children and the disabled. These social services are the subject of great policy interest in that they can create two effects at the same time: increase in labor demand for service providers and increase the possibility of long-term accumulation of human capital for service recipients. Therefore, this study aims to confirm the hypothesis according to whether the use of social services affects family relationships and the effects of social service users' psychological adaptation on marital and parent-child relationships even when other related variables are controlled. The final result of this thesis is a regression analysis to find out the effect of psychological adaptation on the family relationship, spouse relationship, and relationship with children of subjects who have experience using social services. -.661, p=0.001), the higher the psychological adaptation, the higher the spouse satisfaction (β=.465, p=0.001) and relationship satisfaction with children (β=.360, p=0.001). In other words, it was found that the more depressed the psychologically, the more negative the relationship with spouse and children.

This study aims to explore the effects of the parenting education program for high-school maladjusted students. To this purpose, a parenting education program for adolescents developed by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family(MOGEF) was applied to ten high-school maladjusted students in an alternative(Dae-an) class in Jeju. Findings from class observations and interviews with participants are as follows. First, students with school maladjustment recognized importance and necessity of positive self-concepts and had an opportunity for self-growth through parenting education program. Second, students with school maladjustment obtained understanding about their family of origin and confidence for forming their future families. Third, advance learning about meanings and roles of being a parent provided students with opportunities to know importance of responsible sexual behavior. Fourth, practices of basic care with a replica of a new-born baby enhanced participation and concentration level of students with school maladjustment which became extremely effective in obtaining necessary knowledge for the basic care. Fifth, information provision for parent roles according to children's different developmental levels let students recognize that parent's roles change as their children grow and opened a way to grasp the need of parent education. Sixth, education and repetitive practices on reflective listening helped students enhance communication skills which entailed expanding their human relations. Seventh, passing-down of emotion and understanding on child abuse allowed students recognize risks of child abuse as well as the importance and need of skills for controlling emotion. This study sheds lights on the feasibility and effectiveness of a parenting education program for maladjusted or vulnerable students as an effective program for school drop-out prevention.
Objective: In this study, we examined the psychometric properties of the Korean Intergenerational Psychological Ambivalence Scale (KIPAS) for young adult children. Method: Data came from 1,140 Korean young adults aged 19-34, who were never married and had at least one living parent. We translated the individual-subjective dimension of Zygowicz's (2006) Intergenerational Ambivalence Scale from English to Korean. The individual-subjective dimension had eight items that directly measured intergenerational psychological ambivalence (D-KIPAS) and 10 items that indirectly measured intergenerational psychological ambivalence (I-KIPAS). Results: The D-KIPAS and I-KIPAS items showed good internal consistency both for the mother and the father. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that D-KIPAS items loaded on one factor after controlling for method effects, which allowed error variances among the four non-reversed items to covary. Both the positive and negative items of I-KIPAS had good reliability and loaded on the same factor. The mean score of D-KIPAS and the calculated score of I-KIPAS were significantly but moderately correlated, which indicates that the D-KIPAS and I-KIPAS assess correlated but distinct aspects of intergenerational ambivalence. Correlations among D-KIPAS, I-KIPAS, and the proxy variables of intergenerational solidarity and conflict supported the discriminant validity of the KIPAS. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that both D-KIPAS and I-KIPAS are reliable and valid tools to measure intergenerational psychological ambivalence among Korean young adults.
