Parasitic Behaviour of Xanthopimpla pedator Fabricius (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) on Tropical Tasar Silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) Reared on Seven Forestry Host Plants in Uttarakhand, India

  • Antheraea mylitta Drury is a commercial silk producing forest insect in India and Xanthopimpla pedator Fabricius is its larval-pupal endoparasitoid, which causes pupal mortality that affects seed production. Effects of host plants, rearing season and their interactions on parasitic behaviour of X. pedator were studied here, as influence of these factors on biological success of X. pedator is not known. Seven forest tree species were tested as food plants for A. mylitta, and rate of pupal parasitization in both the rearing seasons were recorded and analysed. Results showed that rearing season and host plants significantly affected the rate of pupal parasitization in both the sexes. Pupal mortality was found significantly higher (14.52%) in second rearing season than the first (2.89%). Likewise, host plants and rearing seasons significantly affected length, diameter, and shell thickness of cocoons in both sexes. Out of all infested pupae, 85.59% were found male, which indicated that X. pedator chooses male spinning larva of A. mylitta for oviposition, but we could not answer satisfactorily the why and how aspect of this sex specific parasitic behaviour of X. pedator. Multiple regression analysis indicated that length and shell thickness of male cocoons are potential predictors for pupal parasitization rate of X. pedator. Based on highest cocoon productivity and lowest pupal mortality, Terminalia alata, T. tomentosa, and T. arjuna were found to be the most suitable host plants for forest based commercial rearing of A. mylitta in tropical forest areas of Uttarakhand state, where it has never been reared earlier. Sex and season specific interaction of X. pedator with its larval-pupal host, A. mylitta is a novel entomological study to find out explanations for some of the unresolved research questions on parasitic behaviour of X. predator that opens a new area for specialised study on male specific parasitization in Ichneumonidae.

국내 미기록 곤충기생성 응애, Pyemotes moseri Yu et Liang (Acarina: Pyemotidae)의 생식 및 기생 능력 (Reproduction and Parasitization Capacity of an Insect Parasitic Mite, Pyemotes moseri Yu et Liang (Acarina: Pyemotidae) New to Korea)

  • 국내 미기록종 Pyemotes moseri Yu et Liang (Acarina: Pyemotidae)는 곤충기생성 응애로 매실 씨앗 속 유충에서 처음 발견되었다. 발견당시 응애가 기생하고 있었던 기주의 미토콘드리아 유전자를 증폭하여 염기서열을 분석한 결과 복숭아씨살이좀벌의 유충으로 밝혀졌다. 본 연구는 실험실 조건하에서 P. moseri의 번식과 기생 능력을 조사하였다. 복숭아씨살이좀벌의 유충을 기주로 이용하여 P. moseri의 교미한 암컷 성충을 사육하면서 주기적으로 관찰하여 새로 태어나는 자손의 수와 성별을 조사한 후 제거하였다. 기생 능력 조사는 원예용 상토가 깔린 스테인레스 바트에 대량 사육한 응애가 들어 있는 튜브와 복숭아씨살이좀벌 유충이 가해한 매실 씨앗을 함께 담은 후 지퍼백에 넣어 인큐베이터에 보관하였다. 복숭아씨살이좀벌 유충 또는 번데기에 응애의 기생 여부를 확인하고자 한달 후 매실 씨앗을 조사하였으며 본 실험은 5반복씩 3회 실시하였다. 교미한 암컷이 기생하기 시작한 이후부터 생식이 끝날 때까지의 기간은 평균 24.4일(n=8)이었으며 교미한 암컷 한 마리당 평균 104.0마리(n=8)의 암컷을 낳았디. 복숭아씨살이좀벌의 유충 또는 번데기가 들어 있는 매실 씨앗은 바트당 평균 7개 이상이었고 이중 단 2개의 씨앗에서만 기생에 성공한 응애를 관찰하였다.

  • Stink bug, Canthecona furcellatta (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is an important predator of silkworm larvae. Nymphs and adult attack the early stage silkworm larvae and causes about 10-15 per cent loss to silk industry. Synthetic organic pesticides has tremendous impact on minimizing the pest population but repeated and frequent use has created problems of residual toxicity, development of resistance to insecticides, pest resurgence and out break, phyto-toxicity and hazards to non target species and beneficial organism. Silkworms are very sensitive to pesticides; therefore, attempt has made to control the bug population through introduction of its native natural enemies in the silkworm-rearing field. Biological control has tremendous scope in sericulture because it is eco-friendly in nature and non-harmful farmers. Native natural enemies have been screened. Psix striaticeps, Trissolcus spp. and Telenomus spp. have been recorded as the most potential parasitoid against pentatomid bug. Life cycle, sex ratio and other various attributes of the par-asitoids have been recorded. The parasitization potential of the parasitoid is very high and they have the ability to discriminate between parasitized and unpar-asitized host. Mass propopagation technique under laboratory condition has been standaydized.

  • 꿀벌부채명나방이 무늬수종다리좀벌에 의해 기생 되었을때 이 기주의 혈림프에서 대사물질의 변화가 생겼다. 이 기새벌에 의해 기생된 기주와 기생되지않은 기주의 혈림프에서 총단백질과 총탄수화물의 농도를 비교하여보면, 기생된 기주에서 전체적으로 뚜렷이 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다.그러나, 총유리아미노산은 기생된 후 첫날을 제외하고 기생된 기주에서 전체적으로 뚜렷이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 그리고 유리아미노산 중에서 glycine, proline, arginine, isoleucine, phenylalanie, leucine,valine, glutamk acid,histidine, serine, tyrosine은 뚜렷이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었고,threonine, aspartic acid, methionine, cysteine, alanine,lysine는 약간의 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다.

프루텔고치벌 브라코바이러스(Cotesia plutellae Bracovirus) 유래 $I_{k}B$ 유전자 구조와 피기생 배추좀나방(Plutella xylostella) 체내 발현 패턴 (Gene Structure of Cotesia plutellae Bracovirus (CpBV)-$I_{k}B$ and Its Expression Pattern in the Parasitized Diamondback Moth, Plutella xylostella)

  • 프루텔고치벌(Cotesia plutellae)은 내부기생봉이고 kB억제자 (IkB)와 유사한 유전자가 이 기생봉의 절대 공생바이러스(C. plutellae bracovirus: CpBV) 게놈에서 발견되었다. 이 유전자의 발현 부위는 417 br의 크기이며 138개 아미노산 서열 정보를 포함하였다. 이 단백질은 4개의 ankyrin 반복영역을 지니고 있었으며, 알려진 다른 폴리드나바이러스 유래 IkB 유전자와 높은 상동성을 보였다. 초파리 Cactus 단백질을 통해 대상 기주 IkB와 비교하여 보면, IkB 신호수신영역이 부재하는 구조를 보여, CpBV-IkB는 NFkB 신호전달체계의 비가역적 억제 인자로 작용할 것으로 추정되었다. CpBV-IkB는 프루텔고치 벌에 기생된 배추좀나방에서만 발현되었다. 정량적 RT-PCR 방법으로 CpBV-IkB의 발현량을 조사하여 보면, 기생 첫날부터 발현을 보이기 시작하여 뚜렷한 발현량을 기생 전체 기간동안 유지하는 양상을 보였다. 이 CpBV-IkB의 기능 분석이 간접적으로 이뤄졌으며, 이 유전자 발현물이 대상 기주 항바이러스 억제 인자로 작용할 것이라는 가설을 제시하였다.

  • Lepidoscelio viatrix is a potential biocontrol agent of the eggs of wingless grasshopper, Neorthacris acuticeps nilgerensis, in mulberry plantation in natural conditions. The present investigation was undertaken to understand the attachment of the parasite to the hopper under scanning electron microscope and the oviposition behavior of the parasite. The results reveal that the parasite grips firmly to the lateral and dorsal surfaces of the female grasshopper with its mandibles implanted in the intersegmental membranes of the abdominal segments. During oviposition, L. viatrix initially turn around the egg pod and protrude its ovipositor and insert into the eggs. It lays eggs inside the eggs of grasshopper by an up and down movement of the ovipositor, Further, field observations indicated a drastic fall in the incidence of the grasshopper population on mulberry, with the increased parasitization of L. viatrix.

Studies on the Biological Attributes of Scelionid Egg Parasitoid Psix striaticeps (Dodd) for the Control of Stink Bug Canthecona furcellata (Wolff) in Sericulture

  • Scelionid eggParasitoids Play an important role in biological control of some economically important pentatomids. Stink bug (Canthecona furcellatta Wolff,) is an important predator of Tasar silkworm larvae (Antheraea mylitta D.) and causes 30-40 percent loss in tasar silk industry. Psix striaticeps (Scelionid: Hymenoptera) has been found to be an important egg parasitoid. The parasitization potential of f striaticeps is mere than 60 percent and the sex ratio is female oriented. Studies indicate that the maintenance of existing scelionid population by avoiding harmful practices and the augmentation of scelionids either directly releasing them in the field or by indirectly making the field environment more favorable for them is an important aspect to control the pentatomid population in sericulture. Female bias sex ratio is advantageous to increase the parasitoid population in the field. 24-hour-old egg of stink bug and one-day old parasitoid is suitable for producing maximum progeny. 1 : 30 of parasitoid: host ratio is needed to regulate the estimated population in silkworm rearing field.
