  • This work presents two different methods for quantifying and propagating the uncertainty associated with fuel composition at end of life for cask criticality calculations. The first approach, the computational approach uses parametric uncertainty including those associated with nuclear data, fuel geometry, material composition, and plant operation to perform forward depletion on Monte-Carlo sampled inputs. These uncertainties are based on experimental and prior experience in criticality safety. The second approach, the data-driven approach relies on using radiochemcial assay data to derive code bias information. The code bias data is used to perturb the isotopic inventory in the data-driven approach. For both approaches, the uncertainty in keff for the cask is propagated by performing forward criticality calculations on sampled inputs using the distributions obtained from each approach. It is found that the data driven approach yielded a higher uncertainty than the computational approach by about 500 pcm. An exploration is also done to see if considering correlation between isotopes at end of life affects keff uncertainty, and the results demonstrate an effect of about 100 pcm.

  • In this study, characteristics of reforming process of automotive liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel using plasma reactor are investigated. Because plasma reformer technology has advantages of a fast start-up and wide fuel/oxidizer ratio of operation, and reactor size is smaller and more simple compared to typical combustor and catalytic reactor, plasma reforming is suitable to the on-board vehicle reformer. To evaluate the characteristics of the reforming process, parametric effect of $O_2/C$ ratios, reactant flow rate and metal form on the process were investigated. In the test of varying $O_2/C$ ratio from partial oxidation to stoichiometry combustion, conversion of LPG was increased but selectivity of $H_2$ decreased. The optimum condition of $O_2/C$ ratio for the highest $H_2$ yield was determined to be around 1.0 for 20~50 lpm, and 1.35 for 100 lpm. Specific energy density (SED) was major factor in reforming process and higher SED leads to higher $H_2$ yield. And metal form in the reformer increased $H_2$ yield of about 34 % as compared to the case of no metal form. The result can be a guide to map optimal condition of reforming process.

  • Recently it is strongly required on lower fuel consumption. lower exhaust emission, higher engine performance. and social demands in a spark ignition gasoline engine. In this study. the experimental engine used at test. it has been modified the lean burn gasoline engine. and used the programmable engine management system, and connected the controller circuit which is designed for the engine control. At the parametric study of the engine experiment, it has been controlled with fuel injection, ignition timing. swirl mode, equivalence ratio engine dynamometer load and speed as the important factors governing the engine performance adaptively. It has been found the combustion characteristics to overcome the hysteresis phenomena between normal and lean air-fuel mixing ranges. by mean of the look-up table set up the mapping values. at the optimum conditions during the engine operation. As the result, it is found that the strength of the swirl flow with the variation of engine speed and load is effective on combustion characteristics to reduce the bandwidth of the hysteresis regions. The results show that mass fraction burned and heat release rate pattern with crank angle are reduced much rather, and brake specific fuel consumption is also reduced simultaneously.

  • One of the most important factor to be considered for the analysis of sheet metal forming processes is the tool surface description for arbitrarily- shaped sheet metal parts. In the present study , finite element approach is used to describe the arbitrarily shaped tool surface. In finite element mesh approach, tool surfaces ar, described by finite elements. The finite elements mesh description of the tool surface, which is originally described by CAD data, needs much time and time-consuming graphic operation. The method, however, has been widely used to describe a complex tool surface. In the present study, the contact searching algorithm for the finite element mesh approach is developed based on cell strategy method and sheet surface normal scheme. For the verification purpose, a clover cup drawing, Baden-Baden oilpan problem and a trunk floor drawing were investigated. The computational results based on the finite element approach were compared with the results of available parametric patch approach and experiments.

  • A reactor vibration monitoring has been performed using neutron noise obtained from excore detectors for the safety operation, Traditionally, the spectral estimator based on Fourier analysis has been widely used in the noise analysis of the reactor system. If the bias is too severe, the resolution would not be adequate for a given application. One major motivation for the current interests in the parametric approach to spectral estimation is the apparent higher resolution achievable with these modern techniques. In considering an unbias, a consistency, an efficency, and a minimum lower bound of the statictic estimation, an AR model is appropriate for noise spectral estimation with sharp peaks but not deep valley. In order to select an appropriate model order, the lag value of autocorrleaton function is applied. Burg method to trace the vibration mode of RPV internal is the most sucuessful.

  • The APAM's quantitative effectiveness and comparative study in preventing and treating pressure ulcer has not been sufficiently evaluated mainly because of uncertainty of pressure load input and lack of interpretation of dynamic perfusion recovery characteristics of soft tissue. The purpose of this paper was to quantify and analyze the alternating pressure characteristics of APAM as a preventive measure for pressure ulcers. To quantify the alternating load to human body, we introduced alternating pressure profile concept and developed parametric model of the profile. Regarding pressure level and cycle time, 3 global and 7 local periodic parameters were used to define the profile such as light, standard, typical and heavy duty profile shape. Pressure impulse ratio of light duty is the lowest but pressure fluctuation is significantly high. For the same duty shape, contact conditions are changed with alternating cycle time and more dramatically in shorter alternating cycle time conditions. We can conclude that if we use shorter alternating cycle time on APAM's operation we can get more positive effects regarding to inflated contact time condition. We proposed the quantitative methods on tissue viability study of external loading by simultaneous measurement of interface pressure and tissue perfusion with proper alternating pressure profile conditions.

  • Turbocharger bearings are under the circumstance of high temperature, moreover rotated at high speed. It is necessary to be designed overcoming the high temperature. So the type of oil inlet port, the inlet oil temperature and the sort of engine oil should be designed, controlled and selected carefully in order to reduce the bearing inside temperature. In this study, the influence of aerated oil on a high-speed journal bearing is also examined by using the classical thermohydrodynamic lubrication theory coupled with analytical models for viscosity and density of air-oil mixture in fluid-film bearing. Convection to the walls and mixing with supply oil and re-circulating oil are considered. The considered parameters for the study of bubbly lubrication are oil inlet port's type, oil aeration level and shaft speed. It is found that the type of oil inlet ports and shaft speed play important roles in determining the temperature and pressure, then the friction and load of journal bearing at high speed operation. Also, the results show that, under extremely high shaft speed, the high shear effects on aerated oil and the high temperature effects are canceled out each other. So, the bearing load and friction show almost no difference between the aerated oil and pure oil.

  • Even though, tanks are used at the many industry plants, it is very difficult to control the tank level without any overflow and shortage; moreover, cause of its complication of dynamics and nonlinearity, it's impossible to realize the accurate control using the mathematical model which can be applied to the various operation modes. However, the sliding mode controller(SMC) is known as having the robust variable structures for the nonlinear control systems with the parametric perturbations and with the sudden disturbances. It's difficult to find SMC's parameters, and SMC is bring chattering which injures actuator and increases error. In this paper, Genetic Aloglism based Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller(GA-FSMC) for the precise control of the coupled tank level was proposed. Genetic Algolism and Fuzzy logic are adapted to find SMC's parameters and reduce the chattering. The simulation result is shown that the tank level could be satisfactorily controlled with less overshoot and steady-state error by the proposed GA-FSMC.

  • It is the objective of the present study to conduct correlation analysis for deriving control parameters in vertical shafts using the results obtain by the design of experiments in the preceding research. The control parameters are categorized into objective parameters, derived parameters, condition parameters, operation parameters, and sensing parameters. The maximum pressure in the shaft should be sufficiently small in order to maintain exhaust hood performance. The pressure variations between floors should also be minimized in order to maintain uniform exhaust performance between floors and to save energy for excessive pressure drop in the shaft. The standard deviation based on -4Pa is proposed as an objective parameter to control pressure in shafts. The correlation equation has been obtained between the standard deviation and the sensing parameters of outdoor temperature and the pressure at the top of the shaft.

  • This paper presents a regenerative braking control scheme for Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) drive in Electric Vehicles (EVs). The main purpose is to maximize the recovered energy during battery charging by taking into account the nonlinear physical characteristics of the Switched Reluctance Machine. The proposed regenerative braking method employs the back-EMF in the generation process as a complicated position-dependent voltage source. The proposed maximum power recovery (MPR) operation of the regenerative braking is first based on the maximization of the extracted power from the machine and then the maximization of the power transferred to the battery. The maximum power extraction (MPE) from SRM is based on maximizing the energy conversion ratio by the calculation of the optimum PWM switching duty cycle, turn-on, and turn-off angles. By using the impedance matching theorem that allows the maximum power transfer (MPT) of the MPE, the proposed MPR is achieved. The parametric averaged value modeling of the machine phase currents in the chopping control mode is used for MPR realization. By following this model, a nonlinear equivalent input resistance is derived for the battery internal resistance matching. The effectiveness of the proposed regenerative braking method is demonstrated through simulation results and experimental implementation.
