Aluminum (Al) - based powders have attracted attention as key materials for 3D printing because of their excellent specific mechanical strength, formability, and durability. Although many studies on the fabrication of 3D-printed Al-based alloys have been reported, the influence of the size of raw powder materials on the bulk samples processed by selective laser melting (SLM) has not been fully investigated. In this study, AlSi10Mg powders of 65 ㎛ in average particle size, prepared by a gas atomizing process, are additively manufactured by using an SLM process. AlSi10Mg powders of 45 ㎛ average size are also fabricated into bulk samples in order to compare their properties. The processing parameters of laser power and scan speed are optimized to achieve densified AlSi10Mg alloys. The Vickers hardness value of the bulk sample prepared from 45 ㎛-sized powders is somewhat higher than that of the 65 ㎛m-sized powder. Such differences in hardness are analyzed because the reduction in melt pool size stems from the rapid melting and solidification of small powders, compared to those of coarse powders, during the SLM process. These results show that the size of the powder should be considered in order to achieve optimization of the SLM process.

Considering the influences of fluid penetration, casing, excavation processes of wellbore and perforation tunnels, the seepage-deformation finite element model of oil and gas well coupled with perforating technique is established using the tensile strength failure criterion, in which the user-defined subroutine is developed to investigate the dynamic evolvement of the reservoir porosity and permeability. The results show that the increases of perforation angle and decreases of perforation density lead to a higher fracture initiation pressure, while the changes of the perforation diameter and length have no evident influences on the fracture initiation pressure. As for initiation location for the fracture in wellbore, it is on the wellbore face while considering the presence of the casing. By contrast, the fractures firstly initiate on the root of the tunnels without considering casing. Besides, the initial fracture position is also related with the perforation angle. The fracture initiation position is located in the point far away from the wellbore face, when the perforation angle is around $30^{\circ}$; however, when the perforation angle is increased to $45^{\circ}$, a plane fracture is initiated from the wellbore face in the maximum horizontal stress direction; no fractures was found around perforation tunnels, when the angel is close to $90^{\circ}$. The results have been successfully applied in an oilfield, with the error of only 1.1% comparing the fracture initiation pressure simulated with the one from on-site experiment.
This study was aimed at ultrafiltration (UF) as a pretreatment before reverse osmosis (RO) within the scheme of hybrid reverse osmosis-multistage flush (RO-MSF) desalination. Seawater at elevated temperature (after MSF heat-exchangers) was used as a feed in this process. The pretreatment system was represented as a set of functionally-linked technological segments such as: UF filtration, backwashing, chemical- enhanced backwashing, cleaning, waste disposal, etc. The process represents the sequences of operating cycles. The cycle, in turn, consists of the following unit operations: filtration, backwashing and chemical-enhanced backwashing (CEB). Quantitative assessment was based on the following indicators: normalized permeability, transmembrane pressure, specific energy and water consumption, specific waste generation. UF pre-treatment is accompanied by the following waste streams: $W1=1.19{\times}10$ power of $-2m^3$ (disposed NaOCl with 0.0044% wt.)/$m^3$ (filtrate); $W2=5.95{\times}10$ power of $-3m^3$ (disposed $H_2SO_4$ with 0.052% wt.)/$m^3$(filtrate); $W3=7.26{\times}10$ power of $-2m^3$ (disposed sea water)/$m^3$ (filtrate). Specific energy consumption is $1.11{\times}10$ power of $-1kWh/m^3$ (filtrate). The indicators evaluated over the cycles with conventional (non-chemical) backwashing were compared with the cycles accompanied by CEB. A positive impact of CEB on performance indicators was demonstrated namely: normalized UF resistance remains unchanged within the regime accompanied by CEB, whereas the lack of CEB results in 30% of its growth. Those quantitative indicators can be incorporated into the target function for solving different optimization problems. They can be used in the software for optimisation of operating regimes or in the synthesis of optimal flow- diagram. The cycle characteristics, process parameters and water quality data are attached.
This paper describes structural optimization of optical fiber-wound mandrel hydrophones with Finite Element Method (FEM). The hydrophone is supposed to have operation frequency range of up to 10 kHz and show omni-directional sensitivity pattern at 5 kHz. Studied parameters are mandrel geometry, molding thickness, and material properties of constitutional parts of the hydrophone. Theoretical calculation result shows that pressure sensitivity of the hydrophone increased as either mandrel length or molding thickness gets larger. Also higher pressure sensitivity requires a mandrel or molding material with relatively low Youngs modulus or Poissons ratio. Hydrophone bandwidth increases either as the mandrel length becomes shorter or as the mandrel becomes harder. The omni-directional characteristic is improved as the mandrel length becomes shorter, at 5 kHz. With the above results, we determine the structure of an optical fiber-wound mandrel hydrophone which has the pressure sensitivity of $30 {\times} 10_{-7}$ Rad./Pa, operation frequency range of up to 10 kHz, and shows omni-directional sensitivity pattern at 5 kHz.
Cadaverine (1,5-diaminopentane) is an important industrial chemical with a wide range of applications. Although there have been many efforts to produce cadaverine through fermentation, there are not many reports of the direct cadaverine production from lysine using biotransformation. Whole-cell reactions were examined using a recombinant Escherichia coli strain overexpressing the E. coli MG1655 cadA gene, and various parameters were investigated for the whole-cell bioconversion of lysine to cadaverine. A high concentration of lysine resulted in the synthesis of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP) and it was found to be a critical control factor for the biotransformation of lysine to cadaverine. When 0.025 mM PLP and 1.75 M lysine in 500 mM sodium acetate buffer (pH6) were used, consumption of 91% lysine and conversion of about 80% lysine to cadaverine were successfully achieved.

Over the last decade, physiologically based pharmacokinetics (PBPK) application has been extended significantly not only to predicting preclinical/human PK but also to evaluating the drug-drug interaction (DDI) liability at the drug discovery or development stage. Herein, we describe a case study to illustrate the use of PBPK approach in predicting human PK as well as DDI using in silico, in vivo and in vitro derived parameters. This case was composed of five steps such as: simulation, verification, understanding of parameter sensitivity, optimization of the parameter and final evaluation. Caffeine and ciprofloxacin were used as tool compounds to demonstrate the "fit for purpose" application of PBPK modeling and simulation for this study. Compared to caffeine, the PBPK modeling for ciprofloxacin was challenging due to several factors including solubility, permeability, clearance and tissue distribution etc. Therefore, intensive parameter sensitivity analysis (PSA) was conducted to optimize the PBPK model for ciprofloxacin. Overall, the increase in $C_{max}$ of caffeine by ciprofloxacin was not significant. However, the increase in AUC was observed and was proportional to the administered dose of ciprofloxacin. The predicted DDI and PK results were comparable to observed clinical data published in the literatures. This approach would be helpful in identifying potential key factors that could lead to significant impact on PBPK modeling and simulation for challenging compounds.

Heat pumps have attracted considerable attention as a green energy system because they use renewable energy, such as geothermal, solar energy and waste heat, and can have a low electricity consumption rate compared to other conventional electric heating system. Many studies of high efficient heat pump system design was performed previously, but it is not easy to find any an analytical model that consists of components (e.g. compressor, heat exchangers, and expansion valve), not only having an interrelation and interconnection each other but also being flexible to any change in geometry and operating parameters. In this study, a computational model was developed for a heat pump with warm air as a heat source using the one-dimensional modeling software, AMESim. In combination with an independently-developed analytical model for a scroll compressor, the heat pump model can simulate the physical characteristics and actual behavior of the heat pump precisely. In addition, the reliability of the model was improved by verifying the simulation results using experimental data. The simulation data fell into the 10% error range compared with the experimental data. The heat pump model can be used for system optimization studies of product development and applied to other applications in a range of industrial field.

This study investigates the properties of a high-performance cementitious composite with partial substitution of stone dust for fine aggregate. The relationship between the properties and particle size distribution was analyzed using several analytical models. Experiments were carried out to examine the flowability, rheology, and strength of cement mortars with different stone-dust replacement ratios of 0-30 wt.%. The results showed improved flowability, lower rheological parameters (yield stress and plastic viscosity), and improved strength as the amount of stone dust increased. These results are closely related to the packing density of the solid particles in the mortar. The effect was therefore estimated by introducing an optimum particle size distribution (PSD) model for maximum packing density. The PSD with a higher amount of stone dust was closer to the optimum PSD, and the optimization was quantified using RMSE. The improvement in the PSD by the stone dust was proven to affect the flowability, strength, and plastic viscosity based on several relevant analytical models. The reduction in yield stress is related to the increase of the average particle diameter when using stone dust.
Call centers have become the prevalent contact points between companies and their customers. By virtue of recent advances in communication technology, the number and size of call centers have grown dramatically. As a large portion of the operating costs are related to the labor costs, efficient design and workforce staffing are crucial for the economic success of call centers. Therefore it is very important to determine the adequate number of agents. In this context, the workforce staffing level can be modeled as mathematical optimization problem using queueing theory. In this paper, we deal with an approximate analysis of an N-design call center with two finite queues and two types of reneging customers by using the state decomposition method. We also represent some numerical examples and show the impact of the system parameters on the performance measures of the call center.
On modern operating systems such as Linux, virtual memory is a general way to provide a large address space to applications by using main memory and storage devices. Recently, storage devices have been improved in terms of latency and bandwidth, and it is expected that applications with large memory show high-performance if next-generation storage devices are considered. However, due to the overhead of virtual memory subsystem, the paging system can not exploit the performance of next-generation storage devices. In this study, we propose several optimization techniques to extend memory with next-generation storage devices. The techniques are to allocate block addresses of storage devices for write-back operations as well as to configure the system parameters, and we implement the techniques on Linux 3.14.3. Our evaluation through using multiple benchmarks shows that our system has 3 times (/24%) better performance on average than the baseline system in the micro(/macro)-benchmark.
