  • This paper describes the construction and test results of a 10kVA single phase HTS transformer. Double pancake windings with BSCCO-2223 HTS tape and G10-FRP cryostat with room temperature bore are used in the transformer. Two double pancake windings are connected in series to provide 188 turns and other two double pancake windings are connected in parallel to conduct the secondary current of 45.4[A]. Coefficients of the constructed transformer are obtained using the fundamental teats of the transformer. According to the test results, larger leakage reactance than expected is observed due to the bulky core which surrounds the sryostat.

  • The conventional cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) driver for LCD TV has a transformer for each lamp to step up the high sinusoidal waveform from the low input voltage. The transformer used in the conventional topology causes the driver to have bulky size and high cost. This paper proposes a new transformer-less CCFL driver for LCD backlight that is based on the parallel-loaded resonant inverter topology. This resonant topology enables the circuit to supply enough high voltage for CCFL without a transformer. Also, with current-balancing technique, this transformer-less inverter drives 16 CCFL lamps.

  • In this paper, the transformer type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with additionally coupled circuit was suggested and its peak fault current limiting characteristics due to the fault condition to affect the fault current were analyzed through the fault current limiting tests. The suggested transformer type SFCL is basically identical to the previous transformer type SFCL except for the additional coupled circuit. The additional coupled circuit, which consists of the magnetically coupled winding to the primary and the secondary windings together with another superconducting element and is connected in parallel with the secondary winding of the transformer type SFCL, is contributed to the peak fault current limiting operation for the larger transient fault current directly after the fault occurrence. To confirm the fault current limiting operation of the suggested SFCL, the fault current limiting tests of the suggested SFCL were performed and its effective peak fault current limiting characteristics were analyzed through the analysis on the electrical equivalent circuit.

  • A 1 MV A single phase high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer was manufactured and tested. The rated voltages of primary and secondary of the HTS transformer are 22.9 kV and 6.6 kV respectively. BSCCO-2223 HTS tape was used for HTS windings of 1 MV A HTS transformer. In order to reduce AC loss generated in the HTS winding, the type of concentric arrangement winding was adopted to a 1 MV A HTS transformer. Single HTS tape for primary windings and 4 parallel HTS tapes for secondary windings were used considering the each rated current of the HTS transformer. A core of HTS transformer was fabricated as a shell type core made of laminated silicon steel plate. And a GFRP cryostat with a room temperature bore was also manufactured. The characteristic tests of 1 MV A HTS transformer were performed such as no load test, short circuit test and several insulation tests at 65 K using sub-cooled liquid nitrogen. From the results of tests, the validity of design of HTS transformer was ascertained.

  • This paper presents a novel circuit topology of a DC bus line series switch and parallel snubbing capacitor-assisted soft-switching PWM full-bridge inverter type DC-DC power converter with a high frequency planar transformer link, which is newly developed for high performance arc welding machines in industry. The proposed DC-DC power converter circuit is based upon a voltage source-fed H type full-bridge soft-switching PWM inverter with a high frequency transformer. This DC-DC power converter has a single power semiconductor switching device in series with an input DC low side rail and loss less snubbing capacitor in parallel with the inverter bridge legs. All the active power switches in the full-bridge arms and DC bus line can achieve ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off transition commutation. Consequently, the total switching power losses occurred at turn-off switching transition of these power semiconductor devices; IGBTs can be reduced even in higher switching frequency bands ranging from 20 kHz to 100 kHz. The switching frequency of this DC-DC power converter using IGBT power modules can be realized at 60 kHz. It is proved experimentally by power loss analysis that the more the switching frequency increases, the more the proposed DC-DC power converter can achieve a higher control response performance and size miniaturization. The practical and inherent effectiveness of the new DC-DC converter topology proposed here is actually confirmed for low voltage and large current DC-DC power supplies (32V, 300A) for TIG arc welding applications in industry.

  • In this research, studied were performance improvements of the power conversion system for the high speed EMU. The object of this research is separated into two parts ; the one is the analysis of the designed transformer and the other is the switching improvement of a parallel PWM converter. The multi-outputs of a transformer must be balanced. However, the output of transformer is interfered and unbalanced in practical operation. To solve these problems, the electromagnetic analyzing model of a transformer is used to minimize the output interference. Also, the improvement of converter switching can reduce the unbalanced output and harmonics.

  • A novel zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) push-pull forward converter with a parallel resonant network is presented in this paper. The novel topology can provide a releasing loop for the energy storage in a leakage inductor for the duration of the power switching by the resonant capacitors paralleled with the primary windings of the transformer. Then the transformer leakage inductor is utilized to be resonant with the parallel capacitor, and the ZVS operation is achieved. This converter exhibits many advantages such as lower duty-cycle losses, limited peak voltage across the rectifier diodes and a higher efficiency. Furthermore, the operating principles and key problems of the converter design are analyzed in detail, and the ZVS conditions are derived. A 500W experimental converter prototype has been built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter, and its maximum efficiency reaches 94.8%.

  • The unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) is an effective custom power device that is used at the point of common coupling to protect loads from voltage and current-related PQ issues. Currently, most researchers have studied series unit and parallel unit models and an idealized transformer model. However, the interactions of the series and parallel converters in AC-link are difficult to analyze. This study utilizes an equivalent transformer model to accomplish an electric connection of series and parallel converters in the AC-link and to establishes a precise unified mathematical model of the UPQC. The strong coupling interactions of series and parallel units are analyzed, and they show a remarkable dependence on the excitation impedance of transformers. Afterward, a feed-forward decoupling method based on a unified model that contains the uncertainty components of the load impedance is applied. Thus, this study presents an adaptive method to estimate load impedance. Furthermore, simulation and experimental results verify the accuracy of the proposed modeling and decoupling algorithm.

  • The fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using a transformer winding were investigated. The suggested flux-lock type SFCL consists of two parallel connected coils on an iron core and the transformer winding connected in series with one of two coils. In this SFCL, the high-TC superconducting (HTSC) element was connected with the secondary side of the transformer. The short-circuit experimental devices to analyze the fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL using the transformer winding were constructed. Through the short-circuit tests, the flux-lock type SFCL using transformer winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting operation compared to the previous flux-lock type SFCL without the transformer winding from the viewpoint of the quench occurrence and the recovery time of the HTSC element.
