Pipe Stiffness Prediction of Buried Flexible Pipes (지중매설 연성관의 관강성 추정)

  • In this paper, we present the result of an investigation pertaining to the pipe stiffness of buried flexible pipes. Pipe stiffness (PS) formula for the parallel plate loading condition is derived based on the elasticity theory. Vertical and horizontal displacements are also derived. Vertical deflection is always larger than the horizontal deflection because some of energy due to overburden load is stored in the pipe but the difference is negligibly small. In the study, mechanical properties of the flexible pipes produced in the domestic manufacturer are tested and the results are reported in this paper. In addition, pipe stiffness is determined by the parallel plate loading tests and the finite element analysis. The difference between test and analysis is less than 14% although there are significant variations in the mechanical properties of the pipe material. Therefore, it was found that the finite element analysis can be used to predict the pipe stiffness instead of conducting parallel plate loading test.

Experimental Structural Performance Evaluation of Hybrid Damper Combining with High Damping Rubber and Steel Slit (고감쇠고무와 강재슬릿이 결합된 하이브리드 댐퍼의 실험적 구조성능평가)

  • It is effective to apply hybrid damping device that combine separate damping device to cope with various seismic load. In this study, HRS hybrid damper(hybrid rubber slit damper) in which high damping rubber and steel slit plate are combined in parallel was proposed and structural performance tests were performed to review the suitability for seismic performance. Cyclic Loading tests were performed in accordance with criteria presented in KDS 41 17 00 and MOE 2019. As a result of the test, the criteria of KDS 41 17 00 and MOE2019 was satisfied, and the amount of energy dissipation increased due to the shear deformation of the high-damping rubber at low displacement. Result of performing the RC frame test, the allowable story drift ratio was satisfied, and the amount of energy dissipation increased in the reinforced specimen compared to the non-reinforced specimen.

  • The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the block shear fracture behavior and curling effect on a single shear-bolted connection in thin-walled carbon steel fabricated with four bolts. The specimens that fail by block shear were planned to have a constant dimension of the edge distance perpendicular to the loading direction, bolt diameter, pitch, and gage. The main variables of the specimens were plate thickness and end distance parallel to the loading direction. A monotonic tensile test was carried out for the bolted connections, and the ultimate behaviors, such as the fracture shape, ultimate strength, and curling, were compared with those that had been predicted using the current design specifications. The conditions of curling occurrence in terms of plate thickness and end distance were also investigated, and the strength reduction due to curling was considered.

Characteristics of Structural Behavior of Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC-U) Pipe Buried Underground (지중매설 경질폴리염화비닐관의 구조적 거동)

  • The industrialization and urbanization forced to increase the density of pipelines such as water supply, sewers, and gas pipelines. The materials used for the existing pipe lines are mostly composed of concretes and steels, but it is true that the development for more durable and efficient materials has been continued performed to produce long lasting pipe lines. Recently, underground pipes serve in diverse applications such as sewer lines, drain lines, water mains, gas lines, telephone and electrical conduits, culverts, oil lines, etc. In this paper, we present the result of investigation pertaining to the structural behavior of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) flexible pipes buried underground. In the investigation of structural behavior such as a ring deflection, pipe stiffness, 4-point bending test, experimental and analytical studies are conducted. In addition, pipe stiffness is determined by the parallel plate loading tests and the finite element analysis. The difference between test and analysis is about 8% although there are significant variations in the mechanical properties of the pipe material. In addition, it was found by the 4-point bending test there is no problem in the connection between the pipes by coupler.

Effects of Plate Thickness and Weld Size on the Strength of Fillet Welded Lap Joints (모재의 두께와 용접치수에 따른 필릿용접부의 강도)

  • Specimens with fillet-welded lap joints were fabricated from 20 mm, 60 mm, and 82 mm thick steel plates produced by Thermo Mechanical Control Process. The designed sizes of filet welds were betwen 6 mm and 16 m. The welds' axes were parallel with or perpendicular to the direction of loading or a combination of them. Specimens were axialy loaded in tension and the strength of fillet-welded joints were measured. Test results showed that the strengths of filet-welded joints are higher than the nominal strengths calculated for all the cases tested, and also approximately on the same level regardless of plate thickness and fillet weld size. Especially, the specimens with weld size les than that required by Korean design rules showed no visible defects on welds and also no str ength reduction.

Monitoring of a Steel Plate Girder Railroad Bridge with Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors (광섬유 격자센서를 이용한 철도 판형교의 증속 실험)

  • This study investigates an existing steel plate girder railroad bridge after superstructure rehabilitation to monitor static and dynamic responses using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. This paper also presents an experimental technique to estimate the vertical deflection of the bridge using FBG sensors. Seven FBG sensors are multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed in parallel pairs along the length of the bridge, with one set at the top flange and the other at the bottom flange. In addition to FBG sensors, a conventional electric strain gauge and anLVDT are installed at the mid-span of the bridge for comparison. A test train consisting of one locomotive is placed at the center of the bridge to produce the maximum static effect. The train is also made to pass over the bridge at different speeds ranging from 10 km/h to 90 km/h to monitor the dynamic response of the bridge. This study demonstrates that the measured strains using the FBG sensor compared well with the readings from the electric strain gauge. The results show that the proposed instrumentation technique is capable of estimating the vertical deflection of the bridge for various loading conditions, which is crucial in structural health monitoring. Several dynamic characteristics of the bridge were also identified.

Strength Property of Double Shear Bolted-Connections of Larch (낙엽송 부재의 이중 전단 볼트 접합부 강도 성능)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the structural property of double shear bolted connections in Korean Larch. For the main member, sawn lumber and Glulam were used in which thickness of lumber is 39 mm, 89 mm, 139 mm, 189 mm and Glulam 80 mm, 140 mm, 170 mm. For the side member, sawn lumber and steel plate were used in which thickness of lumber is the same of the main member and steel plate is 6mm. And connections were jointed by M12, M16, M20 bolts which were usually used for wood constructions in Korea. Directions of loading to connections were perpendicular and parallel to grain of main and side member. First, through the dowel bearing test, the dowel bearing strength was evaluated and through the bolt bending tests, the bolt bending strength was evaluated. And then experiments for the connection were performed. Obtained results from experiments were compared with calculated values by EYM and analyzed. Strength of double shear bolted connections in Korean Larch was similar or higher than calculated value by EYM. Especially when the side member was made by the sawn lumber, it was similar to the calculated value. In failure mode, the mode was effected by the knot and the dry defect. In the thin main member, it was shown mode I and as the thickness of the main member was thicker, it was changed into mode III.
