Parallel Machine Scheduling Considering the Moving Time of Multiple Servers

  • In this paper, we study the problem of parallel machine scheduling considering the moving time of multiple servers. The parallel machine scheduling is to assign jobs to parallel machines so that the total completion time(makespan) is minimized. Each job has a setup phase, a processing phase and a removal phase. A processing phase is performed by a parallel machine alone while a setup phase and a removal phase are performed by both a server and a parallel machine simultaneously. A server is needed to move to a parallel machine for a setup phase and a removal phase. But previous researches have been done under the assumption that the server moving time is zero. In this study we have proposed an efficient algorithm for the problem of parallel machine scheduling considering multiple server moving time. We also have investigated experimentally how the number of servers and the server moving time affect the total completion time.

  • Machine tool chatter is the self-excited vibration generated by chip thickness variation and severely degrades the quality of machined surface. The incidence of chatter is greatly affected by the dynamic characteristics of machine tool structure. Therefore, the cutting dynamics in the parallel machine tool is to be carefully studied considering the dynamic characteristics of parallel mechanism. In this paper, the vibration model of parallel machine tool is derived, in which the legs of the parallel mechanism are considered as spring-damper systems. The chatter stability charts for various machining parameters are examined with the example of the cubic parallel mechanism that is specially designed for machine tool use.

  • This research deals with evaluation of machining accuracy for Parallel Kinematic Machine Tool(PKMT) applied parallel type robot system with high precision and stiffness. For this purpose, machine simulation is carried out to foreknow collision and interference between workpiece and tool. Furthermore, on the basis of machine simulation data, PKMT is manufactured. Machining accuracy such as cylindricity straightness, squareness, parallelism circularity, concentricity pitch error and yaw error, is measured by using coordinate measuring machine. Test piece for evaluation of machining accuracy is designed and manufactured under the standard of ISO 10791-7.

  • In machining free-form curves with a machine tool equipped with parallel device, improving contouring accuracy is very important. In this paper, we present contouring control algorithm far parallel machine tool. The relation between the error in Joint space and the error in catesian space is evaluated, and we estimate contouring error vector which efficiently determines the variable gains for the cross coupled control. To show the validity of the algorithm, the contouring control is simulated for free form contour trajectory in cubic parallel machine tool model.

  • This paper describes the mechanism of parallel micro machine platform and its feedback control system for acquiring high accuracy. The parallel micro machine platform that has developed has 5x5x5 work-space and sub-micron accuracy. For the high accuracy, the feedback control system is important but errors in machining and assembling are inevitable. Kinematic calibration is important for this reason. In this paper, various error components are introduced and the effects of error component are analyzed.

  • The parallel machine scheduling is to schedule each job to exactly one parallel machine so that the total completion time is minimized. It is used in various manufacturing system areas such as steel industries, semiconductor manufacturing and plastic industries. Each job has a setup phase and a processing phase. A removal phase is needed in some application areas. A processing phase is performed by a parallel machine alone while a setup phase and a removal phase are performed by both a server and a parallel machine simultaneously. Most of previous researches used a single server and considered only a setup phase and a processing phase. If a single server is used for scheduling, the bottleneck in the server increases the total completion time. Even though the number of parallel machines is increased, the total completion time is not reduced significantly. In this paper, we have proposed an efficient algorithm for the parallel machine scheduling using multiple servers and considering setup, processing and removal phases. We also have investigated experimentally how the number of servers and the number of parallel machines affect the total completion time.

  • We introduce a way to construct a supercomputing capable system with some networked PCs, running the Linux operating system and computing power comparable with expensive commercial workstations, and with the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) software which enables one to control the total CPUs and memories of the networked PCs. By benchmarking the system using a PVM parallel program, we find that the system's parallel efficiency is close to 90 %.

A Study on the Performance Improvement of Machine Translation Using Public Korean-English Parallel Corpus (공공 한영 병렬 말뭉치를 이용한 기계번역 성능 향상 연구)

  • Machine translation refers to software that translates a source language into a target language, and has been actively researching Neural Machine Translation through rule-based and statistical-based machine translation. One of the important factors in the Neural Machine Translation is to extract high quality parallel corpus, which has not been easy to find high quality parallel corpus of Korean language pairs. Recently, the AI HUB of the National Information Society Agency(NIA) unveiled a high-quality 1.6 million sentences Korean-English parallel corpus. This paper attempts to verify the quality of each data through performance comparison with the data published by AI Hub and OpenSubtitles, the most popular Korean-English parallel corpus. As test data, objectivity was secured by using test set published by IWSLT, official test set for Korean-English machine translation. Experimental results show better performance than the existing papers tested with the same test set, and this shows the importance of high quality data.

Non-Identical Parallel Machine Scheduling with Sequence and Machine Dependent Setup Times Using Meta-Heuristic Algorithms

  • This paper considers a non-identical parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence and machine dependent setup times. The objective of this problem is to determine the allocation of jobs and the scheduling of each machine to minimize makespan. A mathematical model for optimal solution is derived. An in-depth analysis of the model shows that it is very complicated and difficult to obtain optimal solutions as the problem size becomes large. Therefore, two meta-heuristics, genetic algorithm (GA) and a new population-based evolutionary meta-heuristic called self-evolution algorithm (SEA), are proposed. The performances of the meta-heuristic algorithms are evaluated through compare with optimal solutions using randomly generated several examples.

Accuracy Improvement of a 5-axis Hybrid Machine Tool (5축 혼합형 공작기계의 정밀도 향상 연구)

  • In this paper, a novel 5-axis hybrid-kinematic machine tool is introduced and the research results on accuracy improvement of the prototype machine tool are presented. The 5-axis hybrid machine tool is made up of a 3-DOF parallel manipulator and a 2-DOF serial one connected in series. The machine tool maintains high ratio of stiffness to mass due to the parallel structure and high orientation capability due to the serial-type wrist. In order to acquire high accuracy, the methodology of measuring the output shafts by additional sensors instead of using encoder outputs at the motor shafts is proposed. In the kinematic view point, the hybrid manipulator reduces to a serial one, if the passive joints in the U-P serial chain at the center of the parallel manipulator are directly measured by additional sensors. Using the method of successive screw displacements, the kinematic error model is derived. Since a ball-bar is less expensive than a full position measurement device and sufficiently accurate for calibration, the kinematic calibration method of using a ball-bar is presented. The effectiveness of the calibration method has been verified through the simulations. Finally, the calibration experiment shows that the position accuracy of the prototype machine tool has been improved from 153 to $86{\mu}m$.
