  • A parallel processing algorithm for discrete Kalman filter, which is one of the most commonly used filtering technique in modern control, signal processing, and communication. is proposed. Previously proposed parallel algorithms to decrease the number of computations needed in the Kalman filter are the hierachical structures by distributed processing of measurements, or the systolic structures to disperse the computational burden. In this paper, a new parallel Kalman filter employing a structure similar to recursive doubling is proposed. Estimated values of state variables by the new algorithm converge with two times faster data processing speed than that of the conventional Kalman filter. Moreover it maintains the optimality of the conventional Kalman filter.

  • A new ripple analog-to-digital converter(ADC) has been developed. It consists of two parallel ADCs and a switching network. The circuit operates on the input signal in two serial steps. First a coarse conversion is made to determine the most significant bits by the first parallel ADC. The results control a switching network to connect the series resistor segment, the analog signal is contained within, to the second parallel ADC. At second step, a fine conversion is made to determine the least signification bits by the second parallel ADC. The circuit requires 2(2$\frac{N}{2}$) comparators, 2(2$\frac{N}{2}$) resistors, and 2(2$\frac{N}{2}$) switches for N-bit resolution.

  • In this paper, suggested is a hybrid-type visual alignment system to align mask and panel in 3-D space, where mask and panel are to be controlled independently by two individual positioning mechanisms in order to compensate for spatial misalignments. In the hybrid visual alignment system, the below 4-PPR parallel mechanism provides in-plain motions to pattern mask like the other conventional alignment systems while the above 4-RPS parallel mechanism is to move glass panel to achieve a complete spatial alignment. For the control of the hybrid alignment system, first, inverse kinematic solutions for the parallel mechanisms are given to determine the driving distance of each active joint, and also an efficient way to determine the spatial alignment error is developed by exploiting three in-plane cameras.

  • In this research, three degree-of-freedom parallel spherical robot is developed for an artificial eyeball. The proposed system is comprised of a moving and a base plate, three prismatic actuators, and a ball joint for an angular movement of the moving plate. The vector analysis is employed to investigate the relationship between positions of the actuators and a pose of the moving plate. The required ranges for every actuators are calculated using the derived inverse kinematics in regard to the combination of two different levels for the size of the system component. Then the size of every components is determined from the analyzed trend. PI controller is employed for the position control of the moving plate. Finally the proposed system is verified using an arbitrary path of the angular movement.

  • This paper presents an improved droop method which minimizes the voltage droop of a parallel-connected power supply Conventionally, the droop method has been used to achieve a simple structure and no-interconnections among power sources. However, it has a trade-off between output voltage regulation and load sharing accuracy In this paper, the droop is minimized with a current and droop gain control using steady-stage estimation. The proposed method can achieve both good voltage regulation and good load sharing. A design example of two 10㎸, 100㎃ parallel modules is made and tested to verify the proposed current-sharing method.

  • This paper presents a parallel processing searcher structure for the initial synchronization of a direct sequence ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) system, which is suitable for the digital implementation of baseband functionalities with a 1.32 Gsample/s chip rate analog-to-digital converter. An initial timing acquisition algorithm and a data demodulation method are also studied. The proposed searcher effectively acquires initial symbol and frame timing during the preamble transmission period. A hardware efficient receiver structure using 24 parallel digital correlators for binary phase-shift keying DS-UWB transmission is presented. The proposed correlator structure operating at 55 MHz is shared for correlation operations in a searcher, a channel estimator, and the demodulator of a RAKE receiver. We also present a pseudo-random noise sequence generated with a primitive polynomial, $1+x^2+x^5$, for packet detection, automatic gain control, and initial timing acquisition. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed parallel processing searcher employing the presented pseudo-random noise sequence outperforms that employing a preamble sequence in the IEEE 802.15.3a DS-UWB proposal.

  • This paper presents an improved parallel particle swarm optimization approach (IPPSO) based decomposed network for economic power dispatch with discontinuous fuel cost functions. The range of partial power demand corresponding to the partial output powers near the global optimal solution is determined by a flexible decomposed network strategy and then the final optimal solution is obtained by parallel Particle Swarm Optimization. The proposed approach tested on 6 generating units with smooth cost function, and to 26-bus (6 generating units) with consideration of prohibited zone effect, the simulation results compared with recent global optimization methods (Bee-OPF, GA, MTS, SA, PSO). From the different case studies, it is observed that the proposed approach provides qualitative solution with less computational time compared to various methods available in the literature survey.

  • Epipolar images have to be generated to stereo display aerial images or satellite images. Pushbroom sensor is used to acquire high resolution satellite images. These satellite images have curvilinear epipolar lines unlike the epipolar lines of frame images, which are straight lines. The aforementioned fact makes it difficult to generate epipolar images for pushbroom satellite images. If we assume a linear transition of the sensor having constant speed and attitude during image acquisition, we can generate epipolar images based on parallel projection model (20 Affine model). Recent high resolution images are provided with RPC values so that we can exploit these values to generate epipolar images without using ground control points and tie point. This paper provides a procedure based on the parallel projection model for generating epipolar images directly from a stereo IKONOS images, and experimental results.

  • A key issue in spoken language processing has become the integration of speech understanding and natural language processing(NLP). This paper presents a parallel computational model for the integration of speech and NLP. The model adopts a hierarchically-structured knowledge base and memory-based parsing techniques. Processing is carried out by passing multiple markers in parallel through the knowledge base. Speech-specific problems such as insertion, deletion, and substitution have been analyzed and their parallel solutions are provided. The complete system has been implemented on the Semantic Network Array Processor(SNAP) and is operational. Results show an 80% sentence recognition rate for the Air Traffic Control domain. Moreover, a 15-fold speed-up can be obtained over an identical sequential implementation with an increasing speed advantage as the size of the knowledge base grows.

  • In this paper, with loosely coupled transformer Relies-parallel resonant type DC/DC converter is analyzed and adopted to the power source of a TFLM(Transverse Flux Linear Motor). To get more efficient operating mode of the series-parallel resonant type DC/DC converter, theoretical analysis using normalized parameters are accepted. The analysis includes a specially made ferrite transformer with two separately wound half cores in order to evaluate analytically and experimentally the changes in magnetizing the leakage fluxes and inductances caused by the distance between the halves. The proposed converter must be operated in switching Pattern III among the three switching patterns for the Zero Voltage Switching operation. According to Pulse Frequency Modulation(PFM) control method, the output voltage of the proposed circuit can be controlled. The results of the theoretical development are compared with practical measurements from a prototype system.
