  • This paper deals with the regional asymmetries of MERCOSUR and regional development cooperation for its solution. Through the formation of a common market, the countries of Southern Cone expected to grow evenly. However MERCOSUR had structural asymmetry from the beginning and exposed policy asymmetry over time. It is basically due to the overwhelming influences of Brazil on MERCOSUR. With regard to asymmetries, Paraguay calls for special and differential treatment. Uruguay wants equitable application of market liberalization. Argentine emphasizes production integration based on the development of value chains. In the issue of asymmetries, while Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentine act as petitioners, Brazil is capable of selecting the initiatives. Under these circumstances MERCOSUR has established FOCEM as regional redistribution mechanism. FOCEM has achieved some results as seen in Paraguay, but there are still problems such as financial limitations and lack of enforcement. In oder to activate the redistributive mechanism for regional integration and to coordinate the policies to resolve regional disparities, transnational governance is essential but all member countries are reluctant to it. To date, regional asymmetries or development gaps have persisted and disparities in individual countries remains a problem.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the information on the antioxidant activity of Phyllanthus. We compared and analyzed three indigenous collections of Phyllanthus: species from Korea, Brazil and Paraguay. Total phenolic acid contents were $1.93{\pm}0.015$ mg/mL in KCS (Korean Collection Species), $1.65{\pm}0.003$ mg/mL in PCS (Paraguay Collection Species) and $1.49{\pm}0.003$ mg/mL in BCS(Brazil Collection Species). In both DPPH radical scavenging activities and SOD-liked activities, KCS was the highest ($67.25{\pm}0.03%,\;78.38{\pm}1.17%$). KCS were also the highest in hydroxyl radical scavenging activities ($95.80{\pm}0.17%$). It turned out that there was no meaningful difference between BCS ($81.64{\pm}0.23%$) and PCS ($81.54{\pm}0.04%$). As for hydrogen radical scavenging activities, there was no statistically meaningful difference between KCS ($36.44{\pm}0.24%$) and BCS ($36.31{\pm}0.33%$) and it was the lowest in PCS ($33.72{\pm}0.15%$). Our results showed that KCS excelled the others not only in antioxidant activity but also in other beneficial effects. This encouraging results may be potentially useful in developing Phyllanthus urinaria L. variety which contains lots of functional elements such as total phenolic acid.

  • Two new species of oribatid mites, Dicastribates tenuisetosus sp. nov, and Liacarus unjangensis sp. nov. are described from Korea. Dicastribates tenuisetosus sp. nov. is easily distinguishable from a single known species, D. heterotrichus (Mahunka, 1984) from Paraguay by the presence of 14 pairs of distallv attenuate notogastral setae, the smooth rostral and lamellar setae, the relatively short and distally attenuating interlamellar setae, the relatively short sensilli with distinctly clavated head, and presence of two and six setae on epimeral region III and genital plate. Liacarus unjangensis sp. nov. can be easily distinguished from most other known species by the very wide lamellae which cover dorsally whole prodorsum, the presence of equal sized inner and outer teeth of lamellar cusps and the minute rostral, lamellar and interlamellar setae.

  • Nearly 50 highly sweet substances have been isolated and structurally characterized from green plants, and such compounds comprise mainly various types of terpenoids, flavonoids, and proteins. Among the sweet substances that have been studied as constituents of North and South American medicinal plants are the sesquiterpene, hernandulcin, the triterpene glycosides, abrusosides A-D, the steroidal saponins, polypodosides A and B, and the dihydroflavonol, dihydroquercetin-3-acetate. In addition, safety studies have been performed on the potently sweet substance, stevioside, from the 'sweet herb of Paraguay' (Stevia rebaudiana), a compound now produced on a commercial scale.

  • This paper analyzed vegetation and land use classification, slope and permanent preservation and legal reserves on the farm Jangada and Jamaica-Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, using satellite image for assisting the planning of planting Eucalyptus spp. This part of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul represents an important geopolitcal area, since it is located on the borders of Bolivia and Paraguay. Also exportation of goods can be achieved through hydrovias extending to Buenos Aires, Argentina-through the Paraguay River. Also there are road and railroad connection which link the soutreastern part of Brazil to the Andean countries. The vegetation map from sheet SF 21-Campo Grande of the RADAMBRASIL Project was used as the basis for the preliminary interpretation of coverage, and complemented by a visit of the field. After the initial interpretation of the image, definition of classes of use and land occupation were made, and files of spectral signatures were created. On the farms Jamaica and Jangada Open Arboreal Savanna and Grass Savanna are the predominant physiognomies occupying 68% of total area. In spite of the results being satisfactory at the present moment, the development of this project should be revised and adjusted based on the evaluations already made, including a greater detailing of environmental components, principally with respect to soil and topography.

  • Postweaning performances of steer from 11 to 18 months of age under intensive feedlot condition were examined in Brahman and Santa Gertudis cattle breeds which have been established in Paraguay. Fitting of growth data in each breed to an empirical growth model with non-linear least square analysis resulted in the following age(t; months) - weight(w; kg) function made out each breed: w=638.26($1-2.341e^{-0.010965t}$) for Brahman and w=716.38($1-2.365e^{-0.10741t}$) for Santa Gertrudis. The estimated mature size of Brahman steers(638 kg) was 11% lower than that of Santa Gertrudis steers(716 kg). However, slightly larger k value (rate of maturing) of Brahman steer in the mechanistic model suggested relatively earlier maturing tendency in the breed. No significant differences in dressing percentage (Brahman, 59.3%; Santa Gertrudis, 58.8%) of chilled carcass weight to live-weight were observed between breed.

  • MERCOSUR (Southern Cone Common Market, Latin American trade organization established in 1991, full members: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay; associate members: Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela) is the world's third largest economic union. It is a vital region that Korean corporations should enter to preoccupy the Latin American market. Since China and Japan are recently moving strongly to advance into MERCOSUR, Korea needs to work out measures to cope with the situation. In trading with MERCOSUR, it is very important to establish a strategic base in the market from a long-term perspective rather than to approach the market only as an exporting market. From this viewpoint, Korea should regard MERCOSUR as a market with which it should cooperate in terms of resources, beyond a market from which it imports raw materials. Helped by its advancement strategies varying according to regional markets and price competitiveness, China is bolstering its market share in these regions. In addition, China has built production bases focused on electric and electronics products. It is also increasing its investments in MERCOSUR as a stable raw material-providing base. To make inroads into MERCOSUR successfully, therefore, Korean enterprises should not regard it as a market where it disposes of stock goods, but should instead export technologically competitive goods to this region. Likewise, Korean companies should expand their investments in automotive parts and machinery in MERCOSUR. Furthermore, Korea should closely study international trading policies of MERCOSUR to clear away any possible obstacles of exports to this region and to prepare countermeasures so as to avoid possible damage from import regulations of MERCOSUR.

  • Hyphessobrycon eques is a famous fish for ornamental fish market and aquarium. They are inhabit in regions of Amazon and Paraguay River basin. Serpae fishs were investigated 2-3 males are chased to female, and then males attempted to simulate the females abdomen. After fertilization, eggs were kept in incubators at $28^{\circ}C$. The fertilized eggs had adhesive and demesal characteristics and had a mean diameter of $0.92{\pm}0.01mm$. Larvae hatched at 16 hrs post fertilization. The hatched larvae averaged $2.90{\pm}0.16mm$ in total length ($L_T$). Complete yolk sac resorption and mouth opening occurred on the third day post hatching. At 45 days post hatching, the larvae were $12.5{\pm}1.60mm$ $L_T$ and had reached the juvenile stage.

  • Stevia rebaudiana (SR) is an herb used traditionally as a sweetener in Paraguay and Brazil, whose use is spreading to other countries, such as Japan, Korea and China. In addition to its low calorie sweet taste, SR appears to have other beneficial properties, such as hypotensive capabilities and inflammation reduction. To identify the bioactive natural constituents exerting anti-inflammatory activities, we examined the EtOAc fraction of SR. In the inflammatory mediator inhibitory assay from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages, the EtOAc fraction significantly, and dose dependently, inhibited the enhanced production of nitric oxide (NO) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. We also found that treatment of cells with the EtOAc fraction significantly inhibited LPS-stimulated nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ (NF-${\kappa}B$) reporter gene expression. Such inhibition of NF-${\kappa}B$ was closely associated with the inhibition of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1). Therefore, we suggest that SR has the potential for development as a functional food for the treatment of immune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
