  • Carcinogenesis is extremely complex. Therefore, it is paradoxical but nonetheless important in cancer research if, in an animal whose parental strains are normally sensitive to cancer induction, we could find mutant strains which are resistant to various carcinogens as a result of mutations in one or two genes. No such mutants have been reported so far as I am aware but we do know that at early stages in their development, fish, mice, and humans are highly resistant to cancer induction by chemicals and radiation. I will give a brief overview of the stage-dependent resistance of fish, mice and humans to cancer induction and discuss the stem-cell mutation theory to explain the cancer-resistant stages. Finally, the latent period of induced neoplasms will be discussed in relation to the stem-cell mutation theory.

  • Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is a common venous anomaly of the thorax and usually drains into the right atrium. Less often it drains into the left atrium and has previously been related to ischemic stroke. We report a case of PLSCV that founded during ischemic stroke evaluation in a 77-year-old woman which was detected on transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) with saline agitated test and computed tomography.

  • Decompressive craniectomy is usually performed to relieve raised intracranial pressure[ICP] caused by various intracranial lesions. A 67-year-old man presented with acute subdural hematoma and traumatic intracerebral hematoma. The patient underwent a decompressive craniectomy. Four weeks later, the patient presented with acute neurological deterioration. Brain computed tomographic[CT] scans revealed the marked concavity of the brain at the site of the craniectomy and associated with midline shift which was reversed by cranioplasty. We report an unusual case of cerebral herniation from intracranial hypotension after decompressive craniectomy for a traumatic subdural hematoma. The cranioplasty may be helpful to prevent paradoxial cerebral herniation.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the Korean red carpet fashion of Daejong, Bluedragon, Korean Film Awards from 2002 to 2004, focusing on nominates of female movie stars and presidents. Leading colors were black and white but pale and vivid colors were also chosen. Dresses were made of satin, chiffon, lace and velvet mainly, and patterned fabrics made strong statements among them. Based on the long and slim silhouette, there were lots of details using beads, sequins and crystal stones for manipulating lighting effects. Fur shawls along with diamond jewelry were favorite items of many stars. They preferred dresses of international brands to that of domestic brands. Esthetic qualities of red carpet fashion were categorized as decorative gorgeousness, sophisticated elegance, glamourous sensuality, paradoxical presentation, pure innocence, and Korean refinement.

  • There has been several proposals to resolve the gentle murder paradox; Forrester claims that the paradox shows that the deontic closure principle should be abandoned, while Sinnott-Armstrong claims that the paradoxical result arises from the scope ambiguity. However, I shall argue, the gentle murder paradox hinges on the logical structure of adverbial expressions. Although Davidson shows an insightful way of understanding logical structure of adverbs, there has been misunderstandings concerning the nature of his account. Especially what is called neo-Davidsonian event semantics is based upon combination of two fundamentally conflicting ideas. I shall propose a new way of understanding Davidson's account, on the basis of which I continue to give a new diagnosis of the gentle murder paradox.

STUDIES ON THE CLINICAL EFFICACY OF VALIUM AND PENTOBARBITAL AS PREMEDICATING AGENT (준비투약(準備投藥)으로서 Valium, Pentobarbital의 임상적(臨床的) 효과(效果)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • To evaluate clinically effect of Valium and Sodium pentobarbital as premedicating agent, both drugs and a placebo were compared in 45 patients (2 to 11 yrs). The results were as follows. 1. Both Sodium pentobarbital and Valium were superior to placebo for control of crying, cooperation and apprehension, but the statistically differences were not significant. 2. Both Valium and Sodium pentobarbital were superior to placebo for control of behavior in tense cooperative child; the differences were significant statistically. 3. The difference between Pentobarbital and Valium were-more pronounced at the initial level than at the subsequent readings, and Sodium pentobarbital was for superior at the initial level to the other drugs. 4. Paradoxical excitement occured in 2 cases on the Sodium pentobarbital group, and other apparent side effect did not occur, excluding mild drowsiness. 5. Neither Valium nor Sodium pentobarbital, as used in this study, resulted in consistantly better behavior in all patients.

  • This paper centers on the erstwhile novelist Kim Seung-ok with a focus not only on his watershed works of the 1960s, but also on his lesser-known works of the 1970s as well as on the circumstances and possible reasons for his decision to quit writing in the 1980s. His works from the 60s address certain basic human contradictions and are in this respect timeless, and these same works are also firmly grounded in their larger socio-cultural contexts of 1960s Korea. This article attempts to place the word firmly here sous rature. In new critical terms, the Kim's settings can not be understood as anything but Korea, in the then and now. This characteristic is shared, however, with highly ideological literature that at times seems to want to beat the reader over the head with the problems and author-sponsored solutions of then and now. In order to understand Kim's paradoxical position in Korean literary history, one must view his works from within the context of the debate between pure and engagement literature.

  • Primary tumors of the chest wall are rare than those of other portions of the body. Soft tissue tumors of the chest wall, though these are benign or malignant, should not be paid special attentions about their management than other soft tissue tumors of the body. Thoracic skeletal tumors, however, have some problems in the treatment because of defect in chest wall leading to herniation of lung and paradoxical movement of thoracic cage. The authors experienced 10 case of primary chest wall tumors at the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, the national medical center, during last 15 years. Five of 10 cases were soft tissue tumors, and they were 2 case of lipoma and each one case of myxosarcoma and leiomyosarcoma. Among 5 bone tumors there no cases of sternal tumor, and their histopathological diagnosis were each one of fibrous dysplasia, giant cell tumor, osteochondroma, Ewing`s sarcoma and osteogenic sarcoma. Wide excision, though it was palliative one in certain case, was performed in 9 cases and only diagnostic incisional biopsy in one case, There were no postoperative deaths during admission to the hospital and all cases were missed during short term follow up after discharge from the hospital.

  • Pulmonary arteriovenous fistula is relatively rare disease, and the most common types are congenital in origin. The clinical presentation of pulmonary arteriovenous fistula ranges from incidental finding on a chest roentgenogram to polycythemia, cyanosis, congestive heart failure, and major neurologic deficits caused by paradoxical embolism. Recently we have experienced a case of asymptomatic, well-localized pulmonary arteriovenous fistula In a 13 years-old female patient, which was successfully treated by thoracoscopic lobectomy.

  • In his recent paper, Hanseung Kim (2014) discusses the Cable Guy paradox and argues that given the nature of regret, it is rational to bet on the cable guy's afternoon arrival, though it is equally probable for him to arrive in the morning or afternoon interval. In this paper, I argue that regret is not essential to the paradox in that the paradox still arises even if we ignore regret. I then briefly discuss a possible way to proceed to resolve the paradox.
