  • In this paper we study efficient parallel implementation for hybrid iterative methods BICGSTAB and BICGSTAB $(\ell)$ with ${Well}=2$ on the CRAY C90 and the efficiency of their parallel performance is evaluated. numerical experiments suggest that on the CRAY C90 a parallel inner product algorithm called PDOTB be used for the par-allelization of hybrid iterative methods containing sensitive values of inner products. Lastly it is shown that the number of iterations in which parallel hybrid iterative methods satisfy a certain convergence criterion depends on the number of processors to be used.

  • In this study the deformation of liquid-air interface of Newtonian or Boger fluids filled between two parallel-plates geometry was investigated when two surfaces were separated at a constant speed. The interface between the fluid and air showed either stable or unstable deformation depending on experimental conditions. Repeated experiments for a wide range of experimental conditions revealed that the deformation mode could be classified into three types: 'stable region', 'fingering' and 'cavitation'. The experimental condition for the mode of deformation was plotted in a capillary number vs. Deborah number phase plane. It has been found that the elasticity of Boger fluids destabilize the interface deformation. On the other hand, the elasticity suppresses the formation and growth of cavities.

  • Linear high-density polyethylene (PE) was controlled to induce strain-hardening behavior by introducing a small amount of second component with an anisotropic structure. In order to form an anisotropic structure in the PE matrix, the polymer was extruded through a twin-screw extruder, and the structure was controlled by varying the extrusion conditions. Depending on conditions, the second component formed a film, thread and droplet structure. If the second component was kept rigid, the morphology evolution could be delayed and the second component could maintain its film or thread structure without further relaxation. In particular, the second component of the thread structure made a physical network and gave rise to remarkable strain hardening behavior under high extension. This study suggests a new method that induces strain hardening behavior by introducing a physically networked second component into the linear polymer melt. This result is anticipated to improve the processibility of linear polymers especially when extensional flow is dominant, and to contribute to our understanding of strain hardening behavior.

  • A case of renal candidiasis is reported in a 4-year-old male Masked Palm civet (Paguma larvata). On necropsy, the kidneys were bilaterally swollen, pale and had numerous 1 to 3 mm diameter white foci throughout the parenchyma on cut section. The urinary bladder was filled with opaque and milky exudate. Histologically, severe infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages and necrosis were noted in the interstitial areas of both cortex and medulla and in the lumens of renal tubules and collecting duct often resulting in cystic dilation of the tubules. • In order to investigate the host range of the mosaic disease of black locust in the Chunchon area, the sap of the mosaic-diseased leaves of black locust itself and the cowpea leaves infected with the above mentioned sap, were inoculated to 53 species of plants belong to 12 families. As to the result, no difference in infection was found as related to the virus sources, and the infection was recognized in 4 species of the family Chenopodiaceae and 8 species of the family Leguminosae. The plants recognized as hosts are as follows: the plants which showed local infection are Chenopodium album, Ch. ambrosioides, Ch. quinoa; the plants which showed systemic infection are Chenopodium amaranticolor, Phaseolus vulgaris, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Vigna sinensis; and Astragalus sinicus, Melilotus indicus, Phaseolus angularis, Pisum sativum and Vicia faba were recognized as carriers. Through investigating its host ranges and symptoms, this mosaic virus of black locust seems not to be regarded as the group of the black locust mosaic virus in southeastern Europe reported by Milinko et al (1961). And, too, it is thought hardly to exist in combination with the cowpea mosaic virus. It appears, therefore, that this mosaic virus was confined to that of black locust.

  • Drug delivery systems (DDSs) incorporating bacterial minicells have been evaluated as a very powerful tool in view of biocompatibility. However, limited studies have been carried out on these systems, mainly using minicells from Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli. Thus, we generated a new minicell-producing strain from an endotoxin-free Corynebacterium glutamicum by the inactivation of genes related to cell division. The two knockout strains, ${\Delta}parA$ and ${\Delta}ncgl1366$, showed distinct abilities to produce minicells. The resulting minicells were purified via sequential antibiotic treatments and centrifugations, which resulted in reproducible yields.

  • One hundred and three random complementary DNA clones representing rainbow trout intestine were par1i811y sequenced as an approach to analyze the transcribed sequences of its genome. Of the sequences generated, 60.0% of the ESTs were represented by 40 known genes. Thirty-five clones of unknown gene products potentially represented 34 novel genes. The most Bbundantly represented messages were the 28S ribosomal protein (6.5%) and beta actin (5.8%). The genes involved in ribosome formation (18%) accounted for the major gene expression. Development of EST panels representing the genes expressed in a particular tissue will be useful in determining the role of these genes in normal function and in response to developmental, hormonal, environmental and physiological changes.

  • The main object of this study is to investigate the effect of Al powder as an additive on the sintering of calcined alumina comparing with that of calcined alumina alone. The degree of Al oxidation is calculated by measuring the weight increase during the firing Water absorption bulk density and compressive strength of the $Al_2O_3+Al$ system at each temperature are compared with those of $Al_2O_4$ alone. The $Al_2O_3+Al$ system shows better physical propeties than Al2O3 alone and it seems by the SEM observation that the fine oxidized Al particles(fine $Al_2O_3$ particles submicron unit) fill the interstices of the original $Al_2O_3$ par-ticles and thus result in the well-close-packed arrangement of the particles.

  • In order to deal with the filtering delay problem of least mean square adaptive filter noise reduction algorithm and music noise problem of spectral subtraction algorithm during the speech signal processing, we combine these two algorithms and propose one novel noise reduction method, showing a strong performance on par or even better than state of the art methods. We first use the least mean square algorithm to reduce the average intensity of noise, and then add spectral subtraction algorithm to reduce remaining noise again. Experiments prove that using the spectral subtraction again after the least mean square adaptive filter algorithm overcomes shortcomings which come from the former two algorithms. Also the novel method increases the signal-to-noise ratio of original speech data and improves the final noise reduction performance.
