  • There are many possibilities that recycled papers adulterate contaminants during the process. The objective of this research was to evaluate safety of paper-based packaging materials for food, especially commercial pizza boxes in Korea. Ultimately, we compared recycled and non-recycled commercial paper packaging materials. This study was based on Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) regulation. PCBs were measured by GC-ECD. Arsenic and lead were analyzed using an ICP-MS. Formaldehyde was determined by LC-MS. Fluorescent materials were detected by UV lamp. The result of this study shows that non-recycled paper packaging materials meets all the tested hygienic specifications for food packaging materials, whereas recycled paper-based paperboard box may be contaminated by fluorescent whitening agent. Though these results need to be further studied, it is recommended to avoid using recycled paper in direct contact with food when used in food packaging.

  • This paper is discussed on the prospects of packaging industry and technologies of Japan for comming 21th century. It is clear that packaging industry depends on living style and social mechanizms. A trends of numerical consumption, amounts of money and composisition of packaging materials are one of a measure of development of packaging industry. Total consumption of packaging materials in Japan of 1965, 1980 and 1993 were $6,344.5{\times}10^3,\;15,898.7{\times}10^3\;and\;21,603.3{\times}10^3$ tons respectively and also, shipping money of packaging materials were $7,073{\times}10^{11},\;45,421{\times}10^{11}\;and\;63,902{\times}10^{11}$ yen, respectively. It is estimated from these data that the packaging industry is also increasing in future according of GNP of country. Compositions of packaging materials from 1965 to 1993, however, are somewhat changing according to development of new materials or social conditions such as platics packaging or wooden packaging materials. Technical forcasts of packaging industry are shown from view point of national living style, energy and resorces as well as environment of world based on forcasting committee of pulp & paper in Japan, report of research committee for the 21th packaging in JPI and materials of symposium in Kanagawa University in this paper. As a my conclusion, many functional packaging materials shall be developed in the future and accordingly Life Cycle Assesment plays a important role of packaging fields. Furthermore, I am estimating in future the new cellulosic materials such as nonwood fiber resources instead of paper, board, wooden containers and a part of plastic packaging materials shall be developed. • The packaging with environment-friendly materials become more important issue since the concern for the environment and the disposal of waste such as the packaging materials has increased. Although the paper based packaging such as corrugated box are widely used as a typical environment-friendly packaging stuff, the heat insulation properties of paper packaging did not get many attention. In this study, the heat insulation properties of paper were deeply evaluated to improve the functional properties as packaging material of the cold storage goods. The simple device for evaluating the heat insulation of paper product was developed. Subsequently, the changes in the heat insulation depending on the paper structure and the addition of the inorganic fillers were investigated by using the instrument. The higher basis weight and the less beating time resulted in the bulkier structure and the less efficiency of heat transfer. The addition of the perlite powder as a filler resulted in the great increase in the heat insulation, although the addition of the calcium carbonate decreased the heat insulation potential of paper.

  • This study was conducted in 2005 to investigate the current status of total packaging industries in Korea. The trends in development of the packaging industry were observed and interpreted as several factors such as the number of packaging industries, the number of employee in packaging industries, size, employee salary, and locations of packaging industry. The number of companies showed the increase of 6.3% per year until 2002 compared to 2175 companies at packaging industry in 1991. Based on the data of the number of companies to produce packaging materials, the packaging companies for plastic, metal, and wood were rapidly increased up to over 9%, whereas the glass and paper companies were only increased in 2%. The number of paper, plastic, wood, and packaging machine companies located at Seoul in 2002 was showed the great reduction, except to glass company compared to the number of the packaging industries in 1993 according to location of the company. Value added per employee in total packaging material industries were showed about 53-thousand dollars in 2002. These values were showed about 64.5% for total manufacture industries and increased to 8.1% from 1991 to 2002.

  • A novel antibacterial paper coated with chitosan-based silver (Ag) nanocomposite prepared by green synthesis has been investigated for a wide range of application in food, agricultural and medical packaging. Green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out by a chemical reaction involving a mixture of chitosan-silver nitrate (AgNO3) in an autoclave at 15 psi, $121^{\circ}C$, for 15-120 sec. AgNPs and their formation in chitosan were confirmed by both UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study showed that free amino groups in chitosan act as an effective reductant and AgNPs stabilizer. Antibacterial test of coated paper with as-prepared chitosan-AgNPs was performed qualitatively against E. coli based on the formation of halo zones around coated papers and it was shown to be effective in suppressing the growth of E. coli with increasing Ag contents in coating layer.

  • As the demands of environment protection increases, the pulp mold container is developed to substitute for EPS (expanded polystyrene) as a shock absorbing packaging material. The water-absorbing ratio and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and compressive strength of pulp mold are important factors to evaluate its shock absorbing characteristics. Influences of mixing ratios of ONP (old newspaper) and OCC (old corrugated container) on physical properties of pulp mold were investigated at various conditions of temperature and relative humidity. The optimum mixing ratio of ONP and OCC was also searched based on physical properties. The results showed that when relative humidity was increased from 60% to 90%, the water absorption ratio of pulp mold increased significantly, tensile strength decreased 20$\sim$30%, and compressive strength decreased 10$\sim$20%. In addition, the optimum mixing ratio of ONP and OCC was found to be 50%:50%.
