  • The paper presents the laboratory study of clayey soil stabilized with Pond ash (PA), Rice husk ash (RHA), cement and their combination used as stabilizers to develop and evaluate the performance of clayey soil. The effect of stabilizer types and dosage on fresh and mechanical properties is evaluated through compaction tests, unconfined compressive strength tests (UCS) and Split tensile strength tests (STS) performed on raw and stabilized soil. In addition SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and XRD (X-ray diffraction) tests were carried out on certain samples in order to study the surface morphological characteristics and hydraulic compounds, which were formed. Specimens were cured for 7, 14 and 28 days after which they were tested for unconfined compression tests and split tensile strength tests. The moisture and density curves indicate that addition of RHA and pond ash results in an increase in optimum moisture content (OMC) and decrease in maximum dry density (MDD). The replacement of clay with 40% PA, 10% RHA and 4% cement increased the strength (UCS and STS) of overall mix in comparison to the mixes where PA and RHA were used individually with cement. The improvement of 336% and 303% in UCS and STS respectively has been achieved with reference to clay only. Developed stabilized soil mixtures have shown satisfactory strength and can be used for low-cost construction to build road infrastructures.

  • This paper describes the effect of fly ash replacement on seawater resistance of anti-washout underwater concrete, which was replaced cement by fly ash from $0\%$ to $50\%$. The experimental work was performed to find out the variations of length and weight of specimens, using a chloride acceleration test in $40\^{\circ}$C The results shaw that the admixture using fly ash on an anti-washcout underwater concrete in the sea environment makes it more durable for the attacks of chloride by seawater. Also, the length of specimens of anti-washout underwater concrete, at age 180 days, increased substantially, compared with normal concrete; however, the mixture in which cement was replaced $50\%$ of fly ash shows $93\%$ reduction of the expansion, compared with the normal anti "washout underwater concrete specimen.

  • This paper indicates the investigation about the development of ET (Environmental Technology) industrial geopolymeric materials from mixture silica mine waste, coal fly ash and alkali activator solution (sodium silicate) by the geopolymer technique at ambient temperature. The results showed that higher compressive strength of geopolymeric mortar increased with a reduce of L/S ratio and increased along with an increase of coal fly ash content. The compressive strengths of geopolymer mortar on low silica of C Silica Mine and K Silica Mine are 18.7 MPa, 20.4 MPa, respectively. Compressive strength of geopolymeric mortar depends on L/S ratio and coal fly ash content added.. Additionally, scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques are used to characterize the microstructure of the geopolymeric mortars. SEM observation shows that it is possible to have amorphous aluminosilicate gel within mortar. XRD patterns indicate the fact that geopolymeric mortar is composed of amorphous aluminosilicate phase, calcite and quartz.

  • The mono-layer cover system is composed of soils only as a filling material and various plants are planted on the surface to control the water balance in the cover system. In this paper, the mono-layer cover system was considered as an alternative landfill final cover system and developed a model that could utilize industrial by-product (especially, coal ash & phosphogypsum) as additive filling materials. The mixture of granite soil, coal ash, and phosphogypsum was placed as a cover material in a box constructed with cement. Laboratory tests were carried out to investigate the environmental effect on the utilization of coal ash & phosphogypsum and to determine the mxing ratio of each materials. In the leaching test, all materials showed lower heavy metal concentration than the threshold values of regulation. The optimum mixing ratio of materials which was applied to field model test was determined to soil (4) : coal ash (1) : phosphogypsum (1) on the volume base. Field model tests were continued from February to July, 2004 in the soil box that was constructed with cement block. It was verified that coal ash and phospogypsum mixed with soil was to be safe environmentally and the water balance of mono-layer cover system was reasonable.

  • This paper investigates the reaction rates of $CO_2$ that stores carbonation through comparing the carbonation behavior between $Ca(OH)_2$ and fly ash with circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) containing a large amount of free CaO. Because fly ash with CFBC contains abundant free CaO, it cannot be used as a raw material for concrete admixtures; hence, its usage is limited. Thus, it has been buried until now. In order to consider its reuse, we conduct carbonation reactions and investigate its rates. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) are conducted for the physical and chemical analyses of the raw materials. Furthermore, we use a PH meter and thermometer to verify the carbonization rates. We set the content of the fly ash of CFBC, $Ca(OH)_2$, $CO_2$ flow rate, and water to 100 ~ 400 g, 30 ~ 120 g, 700 cc/min, and 300 ~ 1200 g, respectively, based on the content of the free CaO determined through the TG/DTA analyses. As a result, the carbonization rate of the fly ash with CFBC is the same as that of $Ca(OH)_2$, and it tends to increase linearly. Based on these results, we investigate the carbonization behavior as a function of the free CaO content contained in the raw material.

  • The major shortcoming of concrete in most of the applications is its high self-weight and thermal conductivity. The emerging trend to overcome these shortcomings is the use of foam-concrete, which is a lightweight concrete consisting of cement, filler, water and a foaming agent. This study aims at the development of a cost-effective high-volume fly-ash foam-concrete insulation wall cladding for existing buildings using natural fiber like rice straw in different proportions. The paper reports the results of systematic studies on various mechanical, acoustic, thermal and durability properties of foam-concrete with and without replacement of cement by fly-ash. Fly-ash replaces 60 percent by weight of cement in foam-concrete. The water-solid ratio of 0.3, the filler ratio of 1:1 by weight, and the density of 1100 kg/㎥ (approx.) are fixed for all the mixes. Rice straw at 1%, 3% and 5% by weight of cement was added to improve the thermal and acoustic efficiency. From the investigations, it was inferred that the strength properties were increased with fly-ash replacement up to 1% rice straw addition. In furtherance, addition of rice straw and fly-ash resulted in improved acoustic and thermal properties.

  • A piece of coating color or base paper picked during printing is called coating pick. Loosely bonded materials of coating color or broken piece of fiber could be adhered to the blanket or would be mixed with ink during printing. Because the coating pick can make troubles in printing press such as piling, hickey and collecting, the coating pick of a paper has been one of the most serious problems in printing. In this paper, two influential factors to the coating pick in the printing, those are latex content and ash content of the coating color, are studied. The surface resistance of coating paper is directly proportional to the latex content, otherwise inversely proportional to the ash content. We propose a different way to evaluate the picking and used a homemade pick test device.
