  • Paper relics, which are made of natural ingredients, are more likely to be damaged by a compendium of complicated causes (e.g., physical, chemical, and biological causes) rather than by a sole cause. In December 2009, Culture Heritage Conservation Science Center discovered several damages in paper relics related to Chungmugong Yi Sunsin, and requested for conservation treatment from the Hyeonchungsa Shrine office. By conducting a comprehensive research to determine the damage level of each artifact, the center was able to establish a proper conservation method, and for two years after its completion of such research in 2010, it has been conducting treatment. This study suggests the proper ways to select adequate conservation treatment based on the type of paper relics - Documents and Books - through the case of artifacts related to Chungmugong Yi, Sunsin. Even though the conservation treatment on paper relics can suppress damaging speed and prevent another damages, it is impossible to stop aging process of relics. Therefore regular inspection is essential for prevent second damage.

  • In this paper we review the observational results on Relic radio sources in clusters of galaxies. We discuss their observational properties, structures and radio spectra. We will show that Relics can be divided according to their size, morphology, and location in the galaxy cluster. These differences could be related to physical properties of Relic sources. The comparison with cluster conditions suggests that Relics could be related to shock waves originated by cluster mergers.

  • We preformed many treatments to preserve Kim-gu's relics (Baekbum-ilgi and the clothes stained with blood). The first we performed re-paper mount of binding area of baekbumilgi, and fumigated all relics to sterilize microorganism. Then all relics were sealed with biaxially oriented polyvinyalcohol film(BO-PVA film) and $N_2$ gas filled up in the BO-PVA film bags. We investigated the paper condition of Baekbum-ilgi, its brightnees was 25-35%, water content was 9.4%, and acidity was pH 4.3. These results indicated that the paper was very weak. On the other hand, We analyzed his blood type and genetic type with the solidified blood of the clothes. In result, his blood type was AB and were classified 6 genetic types such that HUMTH01 was 7-9 type, HumTPOX was 9-11 type, HumCSF1PO was 12-13 type, HumF13A01 was 4-4type, HumFESFPS was 12-12, and HumvWA was 18-18 type.

  • This paper aimed to identify architectural historical meaning of the brick-constructed platform of the west hall in Hwangnyoungsa buddhist temple site based on studying published the excavation survey report and comparing with other platforms of Silla remains. Mass and height of the building has a hierarchical structure within a buddhist temple site, this is applicable in Hwangnyongsa. So in case of a rank equal to or lower buildings than the west hall, those of platforms were built of brick-constructed. As stone relics, jidaeseoks are very narrow, I think that wooden pagoda and main hall's platform were built of brick in first construction period. West hall's platform was built at the late 6th~the mid of 7th century, these brick-remains were considered as a quite earlier construction period relics. Because in west hall there is no jidaeseok under bricks, and all bricks relics have a rectangular shape.

  • In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for recovering the broken letters of relics into an original form by using Z-map and image processing. The letters of relics may have been broken by a lot of rubbed copy and a long time and tide. They need to be restored. But the manual reconstruction is a very tedious and laborious task. Thus, it is necessary to automate the restoration process. This paper presents a realistic algorithm with an application to Tripitaka Koreana by using Z-map and morphological filter.

  • The paper relics excavated from the 4th excavation of the historical spot No.259 Seonwon temple area were analyzed and conserved. Because these works remained folded, the most important conservation treatment was a separation. This process depended on the state of the works: dry state works were separated using Gore-Tex chamber and the filtrated water, wet state works were separated through vacuum freeze drying method. Analyses of the paper relics performed were examination on the paper to find its distinction, binocular microscope and SEM on fiber, and XRF on character ingredient. This study presumed the times though $C^{14}$ dating of these works. The works were able to be classified through analysis and conservation treatment. This separation made lost part of the works conserve an archetype. This study presented the application of conservation methods on the paper relics which are in the bad condition and obtained information through carbon dating of it.

  • Surface segmentation and edge feature lines extraction from fractured fragments of relics are essential steps for computer assisted restoration of fragmented relics. As these fragments were heavily eroded, it is a challenging work to segment surface and extract edge feature lines. This paper presents a novel method to segment surface and extract edge feature lines from triangular meshes of irregular fractured fragments. Firstly, a rough surface segmentation is accomplished by using a clustering algorithm based on the vertex normal vector. Secondly, in order to differentiate between original and fracture faces, a novel integral invariant is introduced to compute the surface roughness. Thirdly, an accurate surface segmentation is implemented by merging faces based on face normal vector and roughness. Finally, edge feature lines are extracted based on the surface segmentation. Some experiments are made and analyzed, and the results show that our method can achieve surface segmentation and edge extraction effectively.

  • We propose expert system for restoration the original character form of ancient relics based on image processing and computer graphics. Letters engraved in relief like relics and intaglio like curved tombstones and letters engraved in plane or curved part of cultural asset may have been broken by a lot of rubbed copy, a long time and tide. In this paper, we suggest a new method for extracting and recovering the broken letters of cultural asset into an original form by using Z-map, morphological filter, and high frequency filter. Based on the suggested method. we develop the character recovering system.

  • Paper relics are affected by a number of complex physical, chemical, biological and artificial damaging factors due to the vulnerability of organic materials. Wet cleaning is a conservation treatment method for removing pollutants from paper artefacts. This study was carried out in order to analyse the effect of wet cleaning on Hanji (Traditional Korean paper made from mulberry trees) which is the main material used in Korean paper relics (historical paper documents). For this study, the color change and folding endurance of artificially degraded paper was analysed before and after immersion wet cleaning. The result showed that washing each twice in 30 minutes is the most appropriate method for obtaining cleaning efficiency and material stability.
