  • Radiation technique has been used to develope mutant rice. Suwon 345 rice seeds were irradiated with 250 Gy gamma ray. Morphological characteristics of the variants in M$_{8}$ generation were observed and random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) analysis was carried out. Plant height, panicle length, 1,000 grain weight and lodging were very different in mutants compared with donor cultivar. RAPD analysis showed that polymorphic bands were presented in several primers of the mutants. In comparison with original variety, variants were classified into four group through UPGMA analysis. A group has mutation trait in panicle length, B group in plant height and C group in 1,000 grain weight. Among mutants, no. 46 and 147 was ranked as salt tolerance and the malonaldehyde content of these mutants was more increased than that of original variety. Valuable mutants obtained will be useful for developing new cultivars and for studing gene function in molecular level.l.

  • A pot experiment was carried out to find the effects of chemicals and its application time on the sterility and other agronomic characters of rice. Two rice cultivars, Samgangbyeo, a Tongil type, and Chuchungbyeo, a japonica type rice were treated with maleic hydrazide (6000ppm), ethephon (6000ppm) and GA3 (10ppm) at five different growth stages. The application times of chemicals were comprised of two different stages of stem elongation and booting and panicle emerging stage. Grain sterility and panicle length were measured for panicles per pot. Culm length was measured for pot basis. MH induced complete grain sterility in rice, but caused severe plant damage (phytotoxicity) ; restricted spike emergence and drying out of plant leaves, sheath and panicles. Ethephon induced 50-60% grain sterility in rice with the least in plant damage. GA3 was not effective in inducing grain sterility in rice, but it increased culm length. The earlier application of chemicals, the higher sterility was induced. Both MH and ethephon reduced culm length and grain yield. Also observed was the varietal response in the occurrence of to chemicals Samgangbyeo showed the higher response to chemicals than Chuchungbyeo.

  • This study was conducted to determine which of the different agronomic traits of rice (Oryza saliva L.) has greater weight in predicting thiobencarb (S-[(4-chlorophenyl) methyl]diethylcarbamothioate) tolerance. Differences in plant height, tiller number, culm length, panicle number, and spikelet number per panicle between tolerant and susceptible cultivars were greater at the higher herbicide rate. However, days to heading and percent filled spikelets were not affected by herbicide rate. At the higher thiobencarb rate, the coefficients for all characters except plant height, tiller number, and percent filled spikelets were significant. Spikelet number per panicle and panicle number which had positive significant coefficients at both concentrations are the most useful indicators of total filled spikelets.

  • Environmental factors play an important role in crop growth and development. In recent years, climate change has become a challenge that limits environmental factors. Light is an important environmental factor for photosynthesis in rice. In addition, temperature is one of the most important factors for rice production; thus, a 1℃ increase in temperature because of climate change can affect rice growth and development. Therefore, we investigated the effect of shading on the growth characteristics of rice under different temperature conditions from the vegetative stage to the flowering stage. Plants were grown at three different temperatures: 26℃/16℃ for 21℃, 29℃/19℃ for 24℃, and 22℃/32℃ for 27℃ in a phytotron. A 55% shade treatment was applied after 10 days of transplanting until the flowering stage. Plant height was not affected by the shading treatment. In the maximum tiller number response to shading, a lower tiller number and growth speed of tiller was found in the 27℃ condition. Among leaf characteristics, shading increased the flag leaf area, length, width, and effective leaf area; however, it decreased the leaf number on the main stem, especially at 27℃. In terms of stem characteristics, shading affected culm wall thickness in both varieties. Finally, regarding the panicle characteristics, lower panicle numbers, spikelet numbers per panicle, primary numbers, and secondary numbers per panicle were found under the shading treatment. Most of the desirable characteristics were affected by the shading treatment at 27℃. Overall, these results indicated that shading had a greater effect on rice plant growth at high temperature.

  • This experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of the deep water irrigation on dry-seeded rice cultivation at the three different water managements-deep continuous flooding(DCF), water saving irrigation(WSI), ordinary irrigation(OI). The highest tillering numbers per $m^2$ of rice were 551, 466 and 455 in OI, WSI and DCF, respectively. The tillering number of rice plants were significantly reduced in DCF. Heading date was delayed and the total chlorophyll content in leaf after heading was higher in DCF than those in other irrigation methods. For the characteristics associated with lodging, the culm length in DCF was slightly elongated and the diameter of culm in DCF was thicker than that in WSI and OI. The breaking weight and bending moment in DCF also were higher than those in others. As the result, although the culm length in DCF was long, the lodging index was comparatively low. The panicle length in DCF was longer than in OI and WSI. The spikelet number per $m^2$ and 1,000-grain weight were the most in WSI, while panicle number, ripened grain ratio and grain weight were not significantly different. Longer panicle length and more spikelet number resulted in higher yielding capacity in DCF.

  • To investigate the effects of foliage clipping time, degree, and nitrogen top-dressing after clipping on the growth and the agronomic characteristics, rice plants grown under ordinary cultural practices were clipped at the maximum tiller stage, 10 days prior to, and after that stage, respectively, with varying clipping, height, as 0, 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 of plant height. And nitrogen was top-dressed at the rate of 0, 2, 4, 6 kg per 10 are immediately after clipping. The variety used was "Jinheung". The results obtained are outlined as follows: 1. Effect of clipping on the growth of rice plant: The subsequent growth was quite rapid during 10 days after clipping, and resulted, on the whole, in nearly complete recovery of defoliation by 20 days after clipping. a) Generally, the later the clipping time, the more growth accelerated. Rice plants clipped before the differentiation of ear primordia nearly recovered the damage, and in certain cases exceeded non-clipped plants in height. But the height of the rice plant clipped after the differentiation of ear primordia was somewhat smaller than that of non-clipped. b) Growth rate was rather rapid in the case of severe cutting, and the height of slightly clipped plants was taller than that of non-clipped plants. However, rice plants clipped to the extent of 2/3 of plant height did not fully recover the damage of defoliation compared to non-clipped plants. c) Nitrogen dressing was effective to rapid recovery of defoliation, the effect increasing with the increasing amount of application. d) Ear-heading was delayed in clipped plots, and this tendency was more apparent with later clipping time, more severe clipping, and increased amounts of nitrogen application after cutting. The range was 6 days at maximum. 2. Effect of defoliation on the yield and its components of rice plants: The yield response to clipping varied somewhat with its time, degree, and nitrogen application after cutting: yield increase of about 10% and decreasement of about 25% at maximum compared to the control plot. Grain yield of most plots was decreased. a) Clipping before the differentiation of ear primordia did not much affect the agronomic characteristics of rice plants. However, clipping after that growth stage decreased culm length, number of panicles, number of spikelets per panicle, and maturing rate of grain to some extent. Consequently this treatment resulted in decrease of about 10% in grain and straw production in spite of increase in panicle length and effective tillering rate. b) Slight, clipping decreased number of spikelets per panicle a little, and the yield of grain and straw by 4-5%, although effective tillering rate was somewhat increased. With severe clipping, panicle kngth, number of panicles, and number of spikelets per panicle decreased more, and the yield of grain and straw decreased about 10%. c) Nitrogen dressing after clipping at the rate of 2 kg per 10 are was effective in increasing grain yield. Nitrogen application over the rate of 4 kg per 10 are increased culm length, number of spikelets per panicle, and straw production, but this decreased the maturing rate, and the 1, 000-grains weight to some extent and resulted in decrease of grain yield.

  • The purpoes of this thesis is to study the effect of the variation of the beginning date of the suspension of irrigation and the length of intermittent suspension period of irrigation in the paddy field on the growth and yield of rice, so as the provide a critical limit of saving irrigation water and an irrigation method to prevent drough damage in rice cultivation. In this experiment, the rice variety adopted was NONGRIM No.29. There were seven main test plot, each test plot having a different beginning date of the suspension of irrigation. A main test plot was susdivided into five small test plots, each having a different length of the suspension period of irrigation. The results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows: 1. The number of tillers is controlled by the treatment of the suspension of irrigation, its beginning date being early of late. The reductive effects of beginning dates of suspension upon the number of tillers. investigated on July 30, are about 84% for the treatment suspended on July 8, 87% on July 12, and 92% on July 19, respectively, in comparison with the standard plot. However. the suspenion treatments after the foregoing dates does not affect the control of their numbers. On the other hand, the lengths of intermittent suspension periods influence highly on the number of tillers to be restrained considerably, the decrease ratio ranging from 91% to 80% Both treatments on dates and periods are so intermingled that the restraining effects of suspension periods become greater as the dates of its beginning are earlier. 2. The elongation of plant hieghts also restrained considerably by the longer periods and earlier dates of suspension treatments of irrigation. Especially, the effects of the lengths of suspension periods become more serious. 3. Heading dates are delayed by two to five days through the suspension treatments of irrigation. However, the heading stage ends almost on the same day without relation to the differences between the irrigation suspension treatments. In the test plot where the suspension date of irrigation comes after the young panicle forming stage, the heading stage ends one or two days later than in the standard test plot. 4. Both culm lengths and panicle lengths show significant differences in their values, i.e., their lengths are shorter, as the begining dates of irrigation suspension are earlier and the suspension periods are longer. 5. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the less is the number of panicles per hill in comparison with the standard plot. 6. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the higher is the significant difference in the number of kernels per panicle in comparison with that in the standard test plot, i.e., the less is the number of kernels per panicle. 7. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the lighter are the weights of rough rice and straws per hill in comparison with those in the standard plot.

  • The growth, development, and morphological characteristics of Echinochtoa colons (L.) Link were determined through one life cycle. E. colons emerged 2 to 3 days after seeding (DAS) and reached the two leaf stage by 8 DAS. During the early growth stages, root length was greater than plant height, but the relationship was reversed from 4 weeks after seeding (WAS). Tillering started from the third leaf of the main culm as the sixth leaf on the main calm emerged. The unfolding of the leaves and tillering followed a regular pattern during the vegetative growth period. This resulted in the production of 19 tillers (5 primary, 12 secondary, 1 tertiary, and I nodal) at the 14-leaf stage. Shoot-root weight ratio was highest just before panicle initiation. The second spike from the top of the panicle was the shortest and produced the fewest seeds. Thereafter, spike length and the number of seeds per spike generally increased, the lower the position of the spike on the panicle. Seeds on the lower spikes weighed less and had lower germination ability than those from the upper spikes. Adventitious roots arose from the leaf sheath bases of a flowering stalk. The ability to produce adventitious roots was greater in a younger stalls than in an older stalk.
