Effect of fibre loading and treatment on porosity and water absorption correlated with tensile behaviour of oil palm empty fruit bunch fibre reinforced composites

  • The challenge of replacing conventional plastics with biodegradable composite materials has attracted much attention in product design, particularly in the tensile-related areas of application. In this study, fibres extracted from oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) were treated and utilized in reinforcing polyester matrix by hand lay-up technique. The effect of fibre loading and combined influence of alkali and silane treatments on porosity and water absorption parameters, and its correlation with the tensile behaviour of composites was analyzed. The results showed that tensile strength decreased whilst modulus of elasticity, water absorption and porosity parameters increased with increasing fibre loading. The composites of treated oil palm EFB fibre exhibited improved values of 2.47 MPa to 3.78 MPa for tensile strength; 1.75 MPa to 2.04 MPa for modulus of elasticity; 3.43% to 1.68% for porosity and 3.51% to 3.12% for water absorption at respective 10 wt.% fibre loadings. A correlation between porosity and water absorption with tensile behavior of composites of oil palm EFB fibre and positive effect of fibre treatment was established, which clearly demonstrate a connection between processing and physical properties with tensile behavior of fibre composites. Accordingly, a further exploitation of economic significance of oil palm EFB fibres composites in areas of low-to-medium tensile strength application is inferred.

증숙면 튀김 과정 중 대두유, 우지, 팜유의 가열 산화 안정성 (Thermooxidative Stability of Soybean Oil, Beef Tallow and Palm Oil during Frying of Steamed Noodles)

  • 대두유, 우지, 팜유에서 증숙면을 튀겨내면서 튀김유의 가열산화안정성을 살펴보았다. 튀김유를 $150^{\circ}C$로 가열하고 증숙면을 30분 간격으로 70초간 튀기는 도중 8시간 간격으로 튀김유를 채취하여 과산화물가와 유리지방산의 함량, 지방산 조성의 변화, 토코페롤 및 토코트리엔올을 분석하였다. 튀김과정중 대두유에서의 과산화물가 및 유리지방산가는 별다른 변화를 보이지 않은 반면, 우지와 팜유에서는 급격한 증가를 보였다. 구성 지방산의 불포화도는 대두유가 가장 높았고 다음이 팜유, 우지의 순이었다. 대두유의 지방산 조성은 튀김과정 동안 거의 변하지 않았으나 우지와 팜유에서는 불포화지방산의 함량이 줄어드는 대신 포화지방산의 함량이 증가하여 산화에 대한 민감성을 나타내었다. 리놀레산과 팔미틴산의 함량비는 대두유의 경우 튀김시간에 따라 큰 차이를 보이지 않았으나 우지와 팜유에서는 튀김시간에 따라 높은 상관관계로 감소하였고 우지보다는 팜유에서 그 속도가 빨랐다. 이것은 대두유가 가열 산화에 가장 안정하고 우지, 팜유가 그 뒤를 따르고 있음을 암시한다. 토코페롤은 대두유에서 튀김과정에 의해 파괴되어 8, 16, 24시간 후 87.5, 81.1, 73.1%가 잔존하였으며 그 파괴 속도는 ${\gamma}$-토코페롤이 가장 컸고 ${\beta}-,\;{\alpha}$-토코페롤 순으로 나타났다. 그러나 대조군 우지와 팜유에 각각 34.2, 169.0 ppm 존재하던 토코페롤과 토코트리엔올은 튀김 8시간을 지나면서 모두 파괴되었다. 따라서 높은 불포화도에도 불구하고 대두유에서 나타난 가열산화안전성은 토코페롤의 높은 잔존량에 기인하였고, 팜유가 우지보다 낮은 가열산화안전성을 보인 것은 구성 지방산의 높은 불포화도에서 일부 기인한 것으로 생각된다.

  • A study was carried out to investigate the effect of palm oil supplementation on the growth, carcass composition and fatty acid distributions of the broilers fed isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets. This study showed that palm oil supplementation increased feed consumption, weight gain and nitrogen intake. Feed conversion improved at higher fat inclusions, but not significant. Male birds consumed significantly more feed than females resulting in significant increase in energy consumption and weight gain. Increaseing fat content in the ME:P constant diet did not produce significant difference in the fat content of the chicken. Fatty acids content of the diet exert varying effects of the composition and distribution of fatty acids in muscles of the chicken. The fatty acids found in larger amount in the breast and thigh muscles were palmitic, oleic and linoleic. The fatty acids of the breast and thigh muscles were found to correspond the fatty acids of the diets. There were no differences in the fatty acids distribution patterns between the sexes.

Permeability and abrasion resistance of concretes containing high volume fine fly ash and palm oil fuel ash

  • In this paper, compressive strength, water permeability and abrasion resistance of concretes containing high volume fine fly ash (FFA) and fine ground palm oil fuel ash (GPA) were studied. Portland cement type I was replaced with FFA and GPA at dosages up to 70% by weight of binder. Ground river sand (GRS) was also used to replace Portland cement in order to indicate the level of filler effect. Results indicated that FFA was slightly more reactive than GPA. The replacement of 40-70% of FFA produced concretes with compressive strength, permeability and abrasion resistance comparable to those of normal concretes. The incorporation of GPA slightly reduced the performances of concretes as compared to those of FFA concretes. The reduction of Portland cement was partly compensated by the increase in pozzolanic activity of the fine fly ash and palm oil fuel ash and thus enabled the large replacement levels.

Questioning the Legitimation of Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Certification in Independent Smallholders Inside Company Concession Areas

  • Only a few researchers highlighted the implementation of Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification. These neglected the importance of analyzing the different trajectories of the relations of production in Indonesian palm oil development. As a result, there is a prevailing doubtful attitude on ISPO legitimation. This paper aims to identify how independent smallholder pilot projects give meaning to ISPO legitimation and implementation. It explores production relations in a smallholder community, focusing on land ownership, the formation of a cooperative, and response capability in cases of failure. This paper reveals that the project brought greater understanding to the community with regards to sustainability, as well as strengthened cooperation between the company and the cooperative. This, despite the community's confronting the same problems of land legality as other independent farmers, as the community is located inside the company concession (Hak Guna Usaha, HGU).

Investigations on PD Characteristics of Thermal aged Palm and Corn Oil for Power Transformer Insulation Applications

  • Partial discharge (PD) detection plays a major role in the life time assessment of liquid insulation in power transformers. Many research works are being carried out to replace conventional mineral oil insulation in transformers by vegetable oils. It is necessary to understand the PD characteristics of vegetable oils before recommending them as an alternate for mineral oil. In this paper, the breakdown strength and PD characteristics of palm and corn oil were investigated in both unaged and thermally aged conditions. Laboratory experiments were performed as per IEC test procedures. PD signals were measured using wide band detection system. Phase resolved PD pattern of vegetable oils and mineral oil were compared. Effect of increase in voltage stress on the PD pattern of palm and corn oil were studied. Time and frequency domain analysis of PD pulses at needle-plane electrode configuration was carried out. Statistical analysis of PD pattern i.e. skewness and shape parameter variations with respect to applied thermal stress were also carried out. From the results, it is observed that palm and corn oils have better breakdown strength and PD characteristics even under long-term thermal stress and hence they can be used for power transformer applications.

Palm Vitamin E Prevents Osteoporosis in Orchidectomized Growing Male Rats

  • Testosterone deficiency increased bone resorption, giving rise to osteoporosis. Testosterone deficiency also increased lipid peroxidation and free radical formation. Free radicals have been shown to be toxic to osteoblasts as well as to activate osteoclasts. In this study, the effects of giving an antioxidant, i.e. vitamin E-rich extract from palm oil on bone mineral density and calcium content was studied. Palm vitamin E prevented the loss in bone mineral density due to orchidectomy, seen in the whole femur, proximal amd midshaft regions, as well as L4 vertebra. Similar observations were seen in bone calcium content of the L5 vertebra. Giving palm olein also prevented the loss in bone mineral density in the femoral midshaft and L4 vertebra; and bone calcium content in the L5 vertebra. In conclusion, vitamin E-rich extract from palm oil was effective in preventing the loss in bone mineral density and calcium content of orchidectomized male rats. This action is probably due to its role as an antioxidant.

  • 가열 산화된 유지들의 품질평가를 위한 방법의 하나로 분광기를 이용한 산화생성물외 측정과 여러가지 이화학적 향수들을 분석하였다. 산값은 가열시간의 경과에 따라 증가하는 경향이었으며, 특히 가열산화의 경우 대두유가 팜유 및 팜을레인유 보다 상승이 뚜렷하였다. 아니시딘값 및 공액중지방산값은 가열시간의 경과에 따라 중가하는 경향이었으며 팜유 및 팜을레인유보다 대두유에서 크게 상승하는 경향이었다. AOM 안정성의 변화는 팜유, 팜을레인유, 대두유외 순으로 좋게 나타났다. 또한, 가열산화유지의 산과정도를 POM과 SOM으로 측정할 수있었고, 일차 및 이차산화생성물은 가열산화시간에 따라 전반적으로 빠르게 중가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 본 연구의 결과로서 간단한 분광기를 이용하여 가열유지중의 POM과 SOM을 신속하게 측정할 수 있었고, 산업적으로 가열유지의 품질을 평가하는 방법의 하나로 사용가능할 것으로 본다.

팜유발효에 있어서 리파제의 특성과 팜유자화와의 관계 (Properties of Lipases and Palm Oil Assimilating Patterns in Palm Oil Fermentation)

  • 미생물에 의한 천연유지의 분해자화과정을 극명함으로써 값싼 유지를 발효원으로서 착용하기 위하여 팜유자화성 유용균주인 Torulopsis candida Y-128과 Acinetobacter calcoaceticus KB-2가 생산하는 리파제의 특성과 이들 균주의 생리적인 특성을 검토하였다. T. candida Y-128은 팜유입자에 부착·자화하며 리파제의 작용에 의해 유리되는 분포화지방산을 포화지방산에 비해 쉽게 자화이용 함으로써 균체증식이 이루어지고 있었다. T. candida Y-128의 리파제는 대부분 균체내에 존재하는데 비해, A calcoaceticus KB-2는 배양시에 균체증식 대수기부터 균체외로 리파제가 생성됨을 알수 있었으며, 리파제에 의해 유리된 포화 지방산도 다른 균주에 비해 자화이용이 용이함을 알 수 있었다. 두 균주는 배양액중에 리파제를 축적하지 않고 균체생육에 필요한 정도를 생산하며 천연중지중 1(3-)-위치의 지방산에 작용하는 위치특이성을 나타내었다. 따라서 두 균주는 천연유지입자에 부착하여 1(3-)- 위치의 지방산을 분해하고, 분해생성물은 지방산대사경로를 거쳐 자화이용되는 것으로 보여진다.
