An Operating System Design and Development for Efficient Painting Process

  • In this study, we design a scheduling system for painting shop, called HYPOS(Hyundai heavy industry Painting shop Operating System) and develop a system implementing the design. The painting shop operations are currently scheduled manually by experts. Manual scheduling is a serious time consuming job and generally can not guarantee a full optimality. Building a traditional heuristic scheduling system lot this problem, however, is not promising because there are various kinds of constraints to be satisfied including space allocation of shipbuilding blocks in a painting cell. We, therefore, adopt a spatial scheduling approach and develop scheduling algorithms based on field-oriented scheduling heuristics and computational geometry. And we show that the algorithms can successfully be applied to the painting shop scheduling problem.

  • Vehicle manufacturing plant is a typical mixed-model production system. Generally it consists of three main shops including body shop, painting shop and assembly shop in addition to engine shop. Each shop contains diverse manufacturing processes, all of which are integrated in a form of flow line. Due to the high pressure from the market requesting small-volume large variety production, production planning becomes very critical for the competitiveness of automotive industry. In order to save costs and production time, production planning system is requested to meet some designated requirements for each shop: to balance the work load in body and assembly shops, and to minimize the number of color changes in painting shop. In this context, we developed a sequencing module for a vehicle production planning system using the ILOG Solver Library. It is designed to take into account all the manufacturing constraints at a time with meeting hard constraints in body shop, minimizing the number of soft constraints violated in assembly shop, and minimizing the number of color changes in painting shop.

자동차 도장공장의 Color Rescheduling Storage 설치를 위한 시뮬레이션 분석 (A Simulation Analysis on the Validity of Color Rescheduling Storage in an Automobile Painting Shop)

  • This paper introduces a simulation study regarding the design for the installation of Color Rescheduling Storage (CRS) in an automobile factory. In the painting shop the colors of vehicles are changed frequently according to the assembly schedule. When the color of a vehicle is changed from one to another, the cleaning process of painting-gun is necessary and it generates costs. Therefore many of the automobile manufacturers equip the CRS in front of the Top Coat Booth of the painting shop. The major objective of CRS is to reduce the change over cost in the painting process by grouping vehicles having same color. In this paper the configuration of CRS and the input/output algorithms are explained. The suggested system is verified using simulation models and experiments are conducted. Finally the best alternative is suggested by sensitivity analysis and evaluation of investment feasibility.

CSF(Color Selection Field)를 통한 버스 도장공장의 생산비용 개선 (Cost Improvement for a Bus Painting Shop by Introducing a Color Selection Field)

  • As the customer's needs for diverse colors, the process of bus painting shop is becoming more and more complex. In particular, frequent changes of paint colors in each spray process require the cleaning of the painting nozzles and setting them up for the new paints, which results in increased time and cost and reduced production. This also increases environmental influences. This paper proposes, as a solution to this issue, the use of color selection field (CSF). CSF is physically a system of conveyors that are used to rearrange objects in a flow line. CSF is proposed, in this paper, to be introduced right before the spray process so that buses are better grouped according to their desired colors. Various parameters of the CSF, such as the number of conveyors and algorithms to determine the rearranged sequence of buses, have been determined by running simulations using the digital manufacturing technology, and investigating the simulation results. As an outcome of the proposed solution, the CSF system is expected to reduce approximately 30% of the nozzle cleaning cost for a Korean motor company case, which will not only benefit the company economically, but will also benefit the environment.

표면처리방법에 따른 강교용 일반중방식도장계의 열화진행수명 평가 (Evaluation of Deterioration Propagation Life of Steel Bridge Paints According to Surface Treatment Methods and Heavy-Duty Painting Types)

  • 본 연구에서는 강교량용 일반중방식 도장계열의 신설 도장계 및 재도장계의 내구수명 예측과 도막 열화곡선을 검토하기 위하여 표면처리방법과 도장 종류를 변수로 총 12종류의 도장 시험편에 대하여 실내 부식촉진시험을 실시하였다. 표면처리는 신설(공장도장)과 재도장(현장도장)에 따라 수공구 (SSPC SP-2), 동력공구 (SP-3), 블라스트 처리(SP-10)를 적용하였다. 도장 시험편은 ISO 20340 부식환경 조건에서 실시하였으며, 각 도장계별 열화곡선은 초기결함으로부터 발생된 부풂 및 녹 면적을 기준으로 평가되었다. 또한 대기 부식성 범주와 강재 내구 성능평가 기준을 이용하여 신설 및 보수 도장계의 내구수명을 실험적으로 평가하였다. 그 결과 표면처리 방법에 따른 신설 도장계와 재도장계의 내구수명을 정량적으로 평가하였으며, 대기부식성 등급 C4에서 일반중방식 신설 도장계의 내구수명은 18 ~ 21년, 재도장계는 5.3 ~ 8.0년으로 추정된다.

Shop Primer의 다중 노즐 분사 스프레이 패턴 인자와 도막두께의 상관관계에 관한 연구 (A Study on Correlation of Dry Film Thickness with Multi-Nozzle Spray Pattern of Shop Primer)

  • Multi-nozzle spray painting procedure of the inorganic zinc shop primer was established in order to obtain uniform film thickness. The shop primer paint prevents the corrosion of steel block during shipbuilding. When the dry film thickness of shop primer is insufficient, rust will be generated on the steel block. Otherwise, thick coating of shop primer may be a problem of weld defect. So, it is important to obtain the uniform film thickness of shop primer. The uniformity of dry film thickness is affected by spray speed, distance from spray gun to target surface and overlapping span of spray path. In order to uniformly maintain coating thickness of shop primer, the coating procedure was established based on the correlation of shop primer spray variables.

  • In this study, we deal a spatial scheduling system for the block painting process in the shipbuilding industry. In general, the spatial scheduling for the block painting process is a very complicated task. Because spatial allocation of each block in blasting and painting cells is considered simultaneously. Thus the spatial scheduling for the block painting process is the problem of planning and control of operation, which arises in shipyard. This system is developed for blocks to meet the delivery date given by the shipyard production planning system, to maximize space utilization of blasting and painting cells and to balance workload among working teams. And it has been tested using actual scheduling data from a shipyard and successfully applied in a paint shop in a shipbuilding company.

유전 알고리즘을 기반으로 한 조선소 블록 적치장의 재배치 최소화 (Minimization of the Rearrangement of a Block Stockyard Based on the Genetic Algorithm)

  • Due to its large size, a ship is first divided into scores of blocks and then each block is constructed through various shops, such as the assembly shop, the painting shop, and the outfitting shop. However, each block may not be directly moved to the next shop and may be temporarily laid on a block stockyard because the working time in each shop is different. If blocks are laid on the block stockyard without any planning, the rearrangement of the blocks by a transporter are required because the blocks have the different in and out time. In this study, an optimal layout method based on the genetic algorithm was proposed in order to minimize the rearrangement of the blocks in the block stockyard. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed method, it was applied to a simple layout problem of the block stockyard.
