  • 'Pae Jang (敗醬)' is one of Chinese crude drugs used mainly as a edema, abdominal pain and hemoptysis, etc. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Pae Jang', it has been considered to be Patrinia scabiosaefolia of Valerianaceae, but there has never been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of the 'Pae Jang', we studied on the anatomical characteristics of the roots of three species growing in Korea. Through our studies, the botanical origin of 'Pae Jang' from Korea was proved to be the under ground portions of Patrinia scabiosaefolia and Patrinia villosa.

  • The effect of polyvinyl alcohol/polyamide-epichlorohydrin (PVA/PAE) complex strengthening additive on dry and wet strength and surface properties of paper was investigated. The enhancements of dry and wet strength and dimensional stability were found when PVA/PAE was applied as a complex strengthening additive compared with the cases of applying individual PVA or PAE. This was understood as physical crosslinking between PVA and PAE in the PVA/PAE complex strength additive. This complex strengthening additive also lowered surface roughness and increased sizing. As a result, PVA/PAE complex strengthening additive provided the distinctive gain dot in printed papers.

  • The physical properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with polyamide-epichlorohydrin (PAE) for wet strength additives in paper industry were investigated. Upon introducing PAE to PVA, not only melting and crystallization enthalpy in DSC but also the area of diffraction peaks in XRD decreased, which represented the fact that PAE acted as a crosslinking agent for PVA. However, this crosslinking seemed to be physical crosslinking having relatively less bonding energy compared to chemical crosslinking since the crystallization in PVA was able to take place by thermal annealing. This physical crosslinking and crystallization by thermal annealing enhanced the thermal stability and mechanical strength in PVA and consequently, these improvements are desired in the paper manufacturing process to increase the dry and wet strength in the paper.

  • We evaluated the immunomodulatory effects of proanthocyanidin-rich extract (PAE) from Pinus radiata bark in broiler. Proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and thymocytes was significantly enhanced in 2.5, 5, 10 mg/kg PAE-treated broiler chickens. Proliferation of splenocytes was significantly enhanced in 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10 mg/kg PAE-treated broiler chickens. These effects were markedly enhanced by the presence of LPS, which acts on B cells responsible for humoral immunity, and Con A, which acts directly on T cells involved in cell mediated immunity. PAE significantly promoted the expression of interleukin-18 and interleukin-$1\beta$. Thus, PAE from P. radiata possesses immunomodulatory effects in broiler chickens.

  • This paper suggests that efficiency improvement of power amplifier to enhance harmonic suppression using a DGS line structure. A efficiency related harmonic component is an important factor to design of power amplifier. Therefor harmonic component suppress consisting coupled line using DGS after power amplifier. A DGS line with periodic slits and stubs is first designed and joined after power ampifier. Experimental measurements for efficiency of power amplifier in the WCDMA are shown to improve 6% of PAE.

  • This paper presents a study on a 2.4GHz differential cascode power amplifier(PA) fabricated using a 130nm CMOS process. This PA is designed for wireless power transmission applications and consists of two differential stages with custom-designed balun transformers for single-ended output. Balun transformers are utilized not only for the output stage but also for power match-ing between each stage. Additionally, a bias circuit with temperature compensation capability is added to maintain stable bias voltage in the 2.4GHz frequency band. As a result, it achieves an output power of 21.75 dBm with a power-added efficiency(PAE) of 40.9% at TT/40℃.

  • We have described a high power hybrid envelope elimination and restoration(H-EER) transmitter for IEEE 802.16e Mobile World Interoperability for Microwave Access(WiMAX) using an efficiency optimized power amplifier(PA). The PA has been designed to have maximum PAE at the important power generation $V_{ds}$, region using Nitronex 100-W PEP GaN HEMT. For the high power application, H-EER transmitter should be considered the regenerative oscillation problem due to the PA's bias fluctuation effect and bias modulator stability issue. Therefore, the bias modulator for H-EER transmitter has been designed to suppress the regenerative oscillation. For the interlock experiment, the bias modulator has been built with the efficiency of 72% and peak output voltage of 30 V for the envelope signal with a PAPR of 8.5 dB. The H-EER transmitter for WiMAX application has been achieved a high PAE characteristic, 38.8 % at an output power of 41.25 dBm. By using digital predistortion(DPD) technique, the Relative Constellation Error (RCE) has been satisfied the specification of -34.5 dB. This is the first work at 2.655 GHz high power H-EER transmitter for WiMAX application.

  • Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella thyphimurium and S. Montevideo isolated from the intestines of dead broiler chickens in Korea were tested for antibacterial effects to purifed bee venom. Purified bee venom from Apis mellifera L. has been used as natural antimicrobial compounds in pigs, cows, dairy cattle and chicken farms in Korea. To investigate antibacterial effect of purified bee venom was evaluated by agar well diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentraion (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and postantibiotic effect (PAE). Purified bee venom exhibited significant inhibition of bacterial growth of C. perfringens, S. thyphimurium and S. Montevideo with MIC value of 0.85, 0.68 and $0.69{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The MBC value of purified bee venom against C. perfringens, S. thyphimurium and S. Montevideo were 3.33, 2.66 and $2.86{\mu}g/mL$. Furthermore, the results of PAE values against C. perfringens, S. thyphimurium and S. Montevideo showed the bacterial effect with 3.5, 4.0 and 3.5 hr. Stability of pufifed bee venom at acidity from pH 1 to pH 8 for 24 hr was the antibacterial activity for C. perfringens, S. thyphimurium and S. Montevideo and melittin contents. Also purified bee venom processed through the heating for 15 min, there was no signification loss of the antibacterial activity and melittin at below $100^{\circ}C$. These results obtained in this study suggest that purified bee venom might be utilized as a feed additive in poultry diets.

  • In this paper, An X-band solid state power amplifier(SSPA) for pulse compressed microwave signal with 60Watt power and power added efficiency(PAE) above 30% is described. Designed 60Watt high power amplifier(HPA) was implemented by cascade coupled amplifiers, and it is consisted on three stage drive amplifiers with internally matched GaAs FET and one stage main power amplifier with an internally matched GaN HEMT. The designed SSPA has performance with more than total power gain 37dB and output power 48dBm(60-W) in condition of frequency range $9.41{\pm}0.03GHz$, pulse period width under 1ms and duty cycle under 10%. The implemented SSPA can apply to high quality digital marine radar applications with pulse compression technique.
