  • The objective of this study was to develop a modified CREAMS model for paddy field conditions. The model simulates daily balance of water and nutrient from irrigated paddies using meteorological, irrigation, and agricultural management data. The model simulates daily evapotranspiration of paddy using Penman equation and determines daily flooding depth changes. Total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations within flooding water, surface runoff, and leaching water from a paddy field also can be simulated. Parameters of the model were calibrated using observed data of the Agricultural Experiment Station of the Seoul National University in Suwon Korea. The model was applied for the irrigation period of paddy field in Gicheon area when 1,234 mm annual rainfall was occurred. The simulated losses of the total nitrogen and total phosphorous were 11.27 kg/ha and 0.98 kg/ha, respectively. There was a good agreement between observed and simulated data. It was found that CREAMS-PADDY model was capable of predicting runoff and nutrient losses from irrigated paddy fields.

  • To investigate the status of repeated use of irrigation water observations of irrigation water were made on dry days during the irrigation periods in 1986 and 1987 crop year. The total area of studied site is 1,441 ha. The site is a major portion of Jedaecheon basin which is located in Bubuk-myeon, Miryang-gun, Gyeongnam Province. The studied area was subdivided into six small blocks. The inflow and outflow of daily irrigation water for these subdivided blocks were checked. Obtained results are as follows : 1. The over all possible ratio of the repeated use of irrigation water in studied area was 48.3%, which means that approximately one half of the surface flow was possible to be repeatedly used as irrigation water in this area. 2. The ratio of repeated use of irrigation water in sloppy paddy area was 4.29%, whereas, the ratio was 21.97% in the plain area. The average figure of this ratio over studied area was estimated as 17.43%.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the GLEAMS-PADDY model by applying it to estimate nutrients loading from paddy-field areas. Field data from Soro region of Chungbuk province during May to September 1999 were used for model application. Field data collected include the amounts of rainfall, irrigation water, drainage water, ET, and Percolation in hydrology Part. T-N and T-P concentrations in the rain water, irrigation water, ponded water, drainage water and percolated water were measured. The comparisons of observed and simulated water balance components and nutrient concentrations showed reasonably good agreements and the GLEAMS-PADDY model may be used to simulate nutrients loading from paddy fields. Futher research was suggested to include the erosion submodel in the GLEAMS-PADDY model to better simulate the nutrient behavior. In addition, the pesticide submodel also recommended to be included in order to simulate the various pesticide applied in paddy fields.

  • Nutrients behavior were investigated at a paddy fields area(Soro-ri) with large-scaled plots on loam soil during irrigation seasons of $2001{\sim}2002$. The average concentration of TN, TDN and TDP in drainage water was higher than that in irrigation water. On the other hand, TP in irrigation water was higher than that in drainage water. The ratio of a TDN to TN accounts for over 90% and the ratio of TDP to TP accounts for $50{\sim}70%$. Especially, the ratio of TDP to TP in drainage water was bigger than that in irrigation water, suggesting that much of particulate component was reduced due to sedimentation and adsorption in paddy fields plots.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze hydraulic characteristics of surface irrigation in a paddy field of direct seeding culture. Field experiment was performed in the paddy field of ridge direct dry seeding. Simulation by a numerical model was also accomplished with the data obtained from the field experiment. The model was developed by one dimensional zero-inertia equation and finite difference method. From the result of the field observation, the furrows of the experimental field were found to have various geometric characteristics. Advance distance and time were measured both in the field and by the model simulation for various furrow lengths and irrigation discharges. Roughness coefficients of each furrow were also estimated by the model.

  • The principal operation rule of irrigation reservoir is to accelerate the water use and supply water actively when water is sufficient, and to restrict water use and supply water deficiently in order not to stop the irrigation activity when water is scarce. In drought seasons. water should be saved in order to keep the reservoir not to be dried up during the irrigation season. It is important to know how much water should be saved, depending on the rice-growing season and water storage volume. For the drought control of irrigation reservoirs. the rotational irrigation scheduling in paddy with the operation rule curve developed in this study could be utilized as a software program to install TM/TC system for irrigation water supply by automation facilities.

  • In order to plan the effective irrigation project in unripened reclaimed paddy fields, the estimation of criteria of irrigation water requirements for the normal growth of crops is very important. This study was carried out to determine the leaching requirements before cultivating crops, the consumptive use of water by the growth of crops, and preventive water requirements of resalinization during the growth period in unripened reclaimed paddy fields. The irrigation water requirements in good permeable soils were estimated as 2,530mm for culvert treatment(S1CW3) and 3,080mm for non-culvert treatment(S1NW4), which were 1.8 times and 2.4 times as high as the irrigation water requirements in common rice fields, respectively. And, in case of poor permeable soils, 3,360mm for culvert treatment(S2CW4) and 3.580mm for non-culvert treatment(S2NW4) were estimated, which were 2.5 times and 2.8 times higher than the normal irrigation water requirements, respectively.

  • The economic evaluation of the feasibility of expanding fully irrgated agriculture in the Ogseo project must consider preproject yields of rice under rainfed and partially irrigated paddy cultivation in order to assess incremental incomes from irrigation. Statistical data on yields available from official sources and field surveys conducted in the project area do not specify whether given unit yields refer to actually cropped or potentially cropped lands. This latter factor obviously affects any evaluation of marginal benefits to be derived from irrigation as the extent of rainfed areas actually cropped varies from year to year according to rain fall at the critical growth periods for low land rice. Although less dependent on direct rainfall, yields from partially irrigated lands are also highly affected by seasonal rainfalls. In this paper on attempt has been made to determine average yield under rainfed and partially irrigated conditions by relating yields to a available water. For rainfed paddy cultivation, the analysis discriminates between effects of rain deficiencies during transplanting and subsquent growth periods. For partially irrigated paddy cultivation, seasonal rainfalls have been considered, implying sufficient storage capacity for supplementary irrigation. The average yield of rainfed paddy has been calculated as 2.11 t/ha and that of partially irrigated paddy as 2.8 t/ha. Assuming even division between these two water supply patterns of areas not fully irrigated, a composite yield of 2.46 t/ha is oftained. This figure will be adopted as the basis for the on-going studies and project evaluation.

  • A pilot study was performed at the experimental field of Konkuk University in Seoul, to examine the feasibility of the constructed wetland system for sewage and the effect of treated sewage irrigation on the paddy rice culture and its soil characteristics. The constructed wetland performed well, in that effluent concentrations of pollutants were significantly lower than concentrations of the influent. Median removal efficiencies of BOD$_{5}$ was about 78% and slightly lower during winter. Removal efficiencies form TN and TP were approximately 48 and 21%, respectively, and relatively less effective than that of BOD$_{5}$. Irrigation of treated sewage to paddy rice culture did not affect adversely in both growth and yield of rice. Instead, plots of treated sewage irrigation showed up to 50% more yield in average than the control plot. It implies that treated sewage irrigation might be beneficial to rice culture rather than detrimental as long as it is treated adequately and used properly. Soil was sampled and analyzed before transplanting and after harvesting. pH was slightly increased due to irrigation water, but it may not be concerned as long as the treated sewage is within the normal range. EC was increased in first year but decreased in second year, therefore salts accumulation in the soil could be less concerned. OM and CES was slightly increased, which might be beneficial on growing plants. TN did not show apparent pattern. Available phosphorus was decreased after rice culture, but the quantity of phosphorus(TP-available phosphorus) was rather increased which implies that excessive phosphorus supply may result in phosphorus accumulation in the soil. Overall, the constructed wetland was thought to be an effective sewage treatment alternative, and treated sewage could be reused as a supplemental source of irrigation water for paddy rice culture without causing adverse effect as long as it is treated adequately and used properly. For full-scale application, further investigation should be followed on environmental risk assessment, tolerable water quality, and fraction of supplemental irrigation.ion.

  • Discharge pattern and water quality were investigated in the drainage water from about 10 ha of groundwater-irrigated paddy field in the growing season of 2001. Total discharge quantity was about 1,117.2 mm in which about 75% was caused by management drainage due to cultural practice of paddy rice farming and the rest by rainfall runoff where total rainfall was about 515 mm. Dry-day sampling data showed wide variations in constituent concentrations with average of 26.14 mg/L, 0.37 mg/L, 3.54 mg/L at the inlet, and 43.60 mg/L, 0.34 mg/L, 3.58 mg/L at the outlet for CO $D_{cr}$ , T-P, and T-N, respectively. Wet-day sampling data demonstrated that generally CO $D_{cr}$ followed the discharge pattern and T-P was in opposite to the discharge pattern, but T-N did not show apparent pattern to the discharge. Discharge and load are in strong relationship. And based on regression equation, pollutant loads from groundwater irrigation area are estimated to be 288.34, 1.17, and 5.45 kg/ha for CO $D_{cr}$ , T-P, and T-N, respectively, which was relatively lower than the literature value from surface water irrigation area which implies that groundwater irrigation area might use less irrigation water and result in less drainage water, Therefore, total pollutant load from paddies irrigation with groundwater could be significantly lower than that with surface water. This study shows that agricultural drainage water management needs a good care of drainage outlet as well as rainfall runoff. This study was based on limited monitoring data of one year, and further monitoring and successive analysis are recommended for more generalized conclusion.
