  • Since organic sulfur compounds respond to GC/ECD sensitively, they interfere with quantitative separation of pesticides during residual pesticide analysis of Allium species. In this study, it was intended to develop a rapid and simple method for pesticide multi-residues analysis through clean-up and interferences by a solid-phase extraction (SPE). An SPE method employing silver nitrate impregnated Florosil cartridge was developed and evaluated for the elimination of sulfur compounds from the test solution of Allium species during pesticide residues analysis. The silver nitrate impregnated Florosil cartridge was prepared by efflux of 3 ml of 20% silver nitrate solution through Florosil cartridge (1 g packing, 6 ml tube). The extracts equivalent to 2, 4 6, and 10 g of each sample were loaded onto the cartridge and allowed to exude, and then the exudations were analyzed by GC/ECD. More than 95% of sulfur compounds were removed from the loaded extracts equivalent, up to 6 g in onion, 4 g in spring onion and 4 g in shallot, respectively. 40 pesticides were spiked in the Allium species and loaded onto the cartridge to determine the recoveries; from this, the recoveries of 34 pesticides were within 70~120%.

  • The phase behavior and dynamics of colloid suspensions and the resulting structures and properties of powder compacts were examined by a computer experimental method for cooperative packing processes. A wide range of properties and process conditions such as arbitrary particle size, medium densities, field strength, and temperature could be examined using the Peclet number (Pe). We demonstrated that an optimum range of Peclet number for the ordering of sediments was present and that the phenomena related to the ordering such as the onset of crystallization, the phase behavior, etc. strongly depend on process conditions. The present work appears to be useful to design the processing method of ceramic spherical submicron powders for the preparation of high-density green compacts.

  • The existing two-phase biological fluidized bed has some problems such as limit of oxygen transfer and blockade of fluidized distributor. In this study, three-phase swirl flow biological fluidized bed has designed to solve the problems and to investigate its running characteristics. TOC of influent synthetic wastewater was approximately $70mg/{\ell}$. HRT of reactor was 1.6 hours. Mean particle size of sand, as packing media, was 0.397mm and packing volume was varied from $200m{\ell}/{\ell}$ to $600m{\ell}/{\ell}$ by stages in the bed. The amount of biomass and effluent water quality was throughly investigated in the bed. Showing experiment results from the above conditions, it was possible to solve the problems of existing fluidized bed and to keep DO of $3mg/{\ell}$ or more. And it was also TOC removal rate of 91 to 94 %, MLVSS of 2,360 to $3,860mg/{\ell}$, MLVSS per g-media of 8.4 to 17.3 mg/g, F/M ratio of 0.59 to $1.04kg-TOC/kg-MLVSS{\cdot}day$, biofilm thickness of $35{\sim}71{\mu}m$ and sludge productivity of 1.03 to $2.35kg-SS/m^3{\cdot}day$. Optimal conditions in this experimental were as follows.; those were biofilm thickness of approximately $54{\mu}m$. MLVSS per g-media of 13 mg and media packing volume of 350 to $400m{\ell}/{\ell}$ when F/M ratio was low, treatment efficiency was high and sludge productivity was low. Showing the media with optics microscope in this optimal condition, attached microbes such as Epistylis sp. were observed. From SEM photographs, it showed that Coccus adhere to and grow on the media surface.

  • A new series of chiral bent-shaped liquid crystals with an asymmetric central core based on 1,6- dihydroxynaphthalene and chiral terminal chain prepared from (S)-(?)-2-methyl-1-butanol, 1,6-naphthalene bis[4-(4-alkoxyphenyliminomethyl)]benzoates [N(1,6)-n-O-PIMB(n-2)*-(n-4)O (n = 8-11)] were synthesized. Their mesomorphic properties and phase structures were investigated by means of electro-optical, polarization reversal current, and second harmonic generation measurements in order to confirm the relationship between the molecular structure and phase structure. All odd n (n = 9 and 11) compounds, N(1,6)-9-O-PIMB7*-5O and N(1,6)-11-O-PIMB9*-7O exhibit antiferroelectric phase, whereas even n (n = 8 and 10) compounds was flexible, N(1,6)-10-O-PIMB8*-6O exhibits the ferroelectric phase but N(1,6)-8-O-PIMB6*-4O exhibits the antiferroelectric phase. These results come from the decrease of the closed packing efficiency within a layer and the lack of uniform interlayer interaction between adjacent layers, which were caused by the asymmetrical naphthalene central core. Thus, we concluded that the structure of central core as well as the terminal chain plays an important role for the emergence of particular polar ordering in phase structures.

  • During the Incipient and Early Silla phases, which witnessed the establishment and development of the ancient Silla state, the Wolseong North Burial Ground functioned as not only the central burial ground in the Gyeongju region of the capital of Silla but also as the central burial ground of the whole Silla state. Wolseong North Burial Ground is where transformations in Silla funerary architecture first occurred. As such, an empirical study of the tombs constructed at this burial ground can be regarded as a starting point from which an understanding of the development of the tomb culture of the Silla state may be achieved. This paper therefore aims to examine the changing nature of the tomb culture of the Early Silla phase through the burial data of Wolseong North Burial Ground and the Gyeongju region. Wooden chamber tombs were constructed from the late phase of Saroguk. At Wolseong North Burial Ground, which eventually developed into the central burial ground of the Gyeongju region, wooden chamber tombs embellished with stone packing emerged during the Incipient Silla phase; wooden chamber tombs with stone mounds, on the other hand, first appeared in the Early Silla phase and eventually became established as the central tomb type. A key difference between the wooden chamber tomb embellished with stone packing and the wooden chamber tomb with stone mound is that, in the case of the latter, stones were packed not only around sides of the wooden structure that acted as the burial chamber but also on top of this structure. The addition of a high earthen mound surrounded by protective ring of stones is another distinctive feature of the latter, presenting a contrast to the low mound of the former. During the Early Silla phase, two types of wooden chamber tombs with stone mounds were constructed at Wolseong North Burial Ground: those with burial chambers located above ground and those with subterranean burial chambers. Also constructed during this phase were the wooden chamber tomb embellished with packed stones, the wooden chamber tomb embellished with packed clay, simple earth cut burials, which had been used since the Incipient Silla phase, as well as the stone-lined burials with vertical entrance which first appeared in the Early Silla phase. However, of these different types of burials, it was only the wooden chamber tomb with stone mound that was covered with a 'high mound.' Differentiation between the different tomb types can also be observed in terms of location, type of burial chamber used, construction method, and tomb size. It is therefore possible to surmise that stratification between the different tomb types, which first emerged in the Incipient Silla phase, became intensified during the Early Silla phase.

  • A computer experimental model for analyzing the microstructures and properties of vibratory deposited power compacts was developed. The effects of some significant variables such as amplitude, frequency, cycle, etc. on the change of diffraction patterns and packing densities of the deposited powder compacts were examined. In addition, the condition of phase transition from non-crystalline phase to crystalline one was determined. Data obtained from the present method quite well fitted the empirical correlations for real experimental data. In conclusion, the present model is so useful to investigate the densification and ordering of vibratory compaction.

  • In order to utilize cinder melting slag as a filter media to control the quality of early rainwater, its environmental stability was verified by heavy metal elution experiment and improved by pre-treatment. Possibilities of improving its function as an absorbent was considered. Absorption characteristics of melting slag before and after the pre-treatment were analyzed by heavy metal equilibrium and stationary-phase column experiments, which in turn were analyzed by comparison experiment with activated carbon. As a result of heavy metal elution experiment, every metal item existed in a much lower amount than the criteria or was not detected, implying that there is no problem recycling it. Absorption equilibrium experiment showed that the time for pre-treatment melting slag to reach the equilibrium was reduced, while the absorbed amount was greatly increased. Stationary-phase column experiment assures us that the elimination rate was not changed much by influx rate, pH and the change in packing volume rate, indicating that this melting slag can be used not only as a filter media to control the quality of early rainwater but also in many areas of water-processing.

  • The bulk properties of poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate)-poly(ethylene glycol), PBLG-PEO, diblock copolymer were investigated. The helical transition from 7/2 to 13/5 for pure PBLG was at 120 oC while those of GE-1 and GE-2, which contain flexible PEO block 40 wt% and 60 wt% respectively, were shown at 135℃ on DSC experiments. FT-IR and XRD experiments were shown that the diblock copolymers maintained their α-helical structure in the temperature range between 25℃ and 175℃. Increasing relative size of coil part resulted in the increase of intermolecular packing distances. Due to well-maintained helical structure, lyotropic LC phases were observed for the PBLG-PEO block copolymer by the polarized optical microscope (POM). Especially, GE-3 copolymer, which has 12.5 wt% PEO contents, showed the smectic C phase. The competition of favorable aggregation energy between rod-rod and coil-coil, and unfavorable aggregation energy of rod-coil give rise to change the supramolecular structure in mixed solvent.

  • A statistical thermodynamic theory of thermotropic main-chain polymeric liquid crystalline melts is developed within the framework of the lattice model by a generalization of the well-known procedure of Flory and DiMarzio. According to the results of Vasilenko et al., the theory of orientational ordering in melts of polymers containing rigid and flexible segments in the main chain is taken into account. When the ordering of flexible segments in the nematic melt is correlated with that of rigid mesogenic groups, the former is assumed to be given as a function of the ordering of rigid mesogenic cores. A free energy density that includes short-range packing contributions is formulated. The properties of the liquid-crystalline transiton are investigated for various cases of the system. The results calculated in this paper show not only the order-parameter values but also the first-order phase transition phenomena that are similar to those observed experimentally for the thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymers and show the transitional entropy terms which actually increase upon orientational ordering. In the orientational ordering values, it is shown that mesogenic groups, flexible segments, and gauche energy (temperature) may be quite substantial. Finally, by using the flexibility term, we predict the highly anisotropic mesophase which was shown by Vasilenko et al.

  • Liquid phase nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) contains air, carbon monoxide, water, carbon dioxide and NOx as main impurities. It is known to be very dangerous to obtain a very pure $N_2O$ product by using solidification at low temperature. In this study a new method to obtain a high purity of $N_2O$ product based on a continuous distillation process was introduced. For the modeling of the continuous distillation process to obtain a product having a purity over 99.999% of $N_2O$ stream, Intalox wire gauze packing- No. SCH-80S gauze packing column was used. Peng-Robinson equation of state was used for the modeling of the continuous distillation process and refrigeration system. Computational results performed in this work showed a good agreement with Aspen Plus simulation results.
