Characteristics of sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification in a semi-continuous type reactor and the kinetic parameters were studied. Enriched autotrophic denitrifying culture was used for the reactor operation. Biomass growth on sulfur particles and in the liquid medium was monitored using the DAPI staining method. From the result of ion concentration changes and the biomass growth, maximum specific growth rate, ${\mu}_{max}$, and the half velocity constant, $K_M$, were estimated as $0.61\;d^{-1}$ and 3.66 mg/L, respectively. Growth yield coefficient, Y values for electron acceptor and donor were found as 0.49 gVSS/g N and 0.16 gVSS/g S. The biomass showed specific denitrification rate, ranging 0.86-1.13 gN/g VSS-d. A half-order equation was found to best simulate the denitrification process in the packed bed reactor operated in the semi-continuous mode.
The purpose of this paper is to obtain the basic data for design of pressure cooling system. Static pressure drop, as a function of superficial velocity, was measured for different stacking methods and stacking heights of some fruits and vegetables. At given superficial velocity, sphericity and void fraction had a much greater influence on static pressure drop than average diameter of spherical fruits such as apple, peach, tomato and kiwi fruit. Among cylindrical vegetables such as cucumber, carrot, radish and chinese cabbage, cucumber showed different pattern of static pressure drop because of its bended shape, radish showed less static pressure drop than other vegetables because its large sizes of voids. When cucumber and spinach were stacked vertically and horizontally to air flow, a much greater static pressure drop was shown in vertical than in horizontal type, therefore static pressure drop was affected not only by void fraction but also by void shape. Also, in packed-beds of fruits and vegetables, static pressure drop could be estimated very well by Ramsins equation.

In this paper, in order to investigate the catalytic effect of the sludge exhausted from waterworks on NO$_{x}$ removal, we measure NO removal characteristics with and without sludge pellets in BaTiO$_3$-sludge packed-bed reactor of plate-plate geometry. NO initial concentration is 50 ppm balanced with air and a gas flow rate is 5ι/min. Gas temperature is changed from 25 to 10$0^{\circ}C$ to investigate the role of sludge pellet on removing active oxygen species and NO$_2$. BaTiO$_3$pellets is filled for coronal discharge at upstream of reactor and sludge pellets is filled for catalytic effect at downstream of reactor. The volume percent of sludge pellets to BaTiO$_3$pellets is changed from 0% to 100% and AC voltage is supplied to the reactor for discharging simulated gases. In the results, when sludge pellets is put at the downstream of plasma reactor, NO removal rate is slightly increased. However, NO$_2$and $O_3$ as by-products during NO removal is significantly decreased from 51ppm without sludge pellets to 5 ppm with sludge pellets and from 50 ppm without sludge pellets to 0.004ppm with sludge pellets, respectively. Therefore, NO$_{x}$(NO+NO$_2$) removal rate is increased up to 93%. It is thought that sludge pellet maybe react with active oxygen species and NO$_2$ generated by corona discharge in surface of BaTiO$_3$pellets, the then NO$_2$O$_3$as by-products are considerably decreased. When we increase gas temperature from room temperature to 10$0^{\circ}C$, NO removal rate is decreased, while NO$_2$ concentration is independent on gas temperature. These result suggest that the removal mechanism of active oxygen species and NO$_2$in sludge pellet is not absorption, but chemical reaction. Therefore we expect that sludge pellets exhausted for waterworks could be used as catalyst for NO$_{x}$ removal with high removal rate and low by-product.oduct.

Cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTasa) from Thermoanaerobacter sp. was adsorbed on the ion exchange resin Amberlite IRA-900. The optimum conditions for the immobilization of the CGTase were pH6.0 and 600 U CGTase/g resin, and the maximum yield of immobilization was around 63% on the basis of amount ratio of the adsorbed enzyme to intial amount in the solution. Immobilixation of CGTase shifted the optimum temperature for the enzyme to peoduce transglycosylated xylitol from 7$0^{\circ}C$ to 9$0^{\circ}C$ and improved the thermal stability of immobilized CGTase, especially after the addition of soluble starch and calcium ions. Transglycosylated xylitol was continuoncly produced using immobilized CGTase in the column type packed bed reactor, and the operating conditions for maximum yield were 10%(w/v) dextrin (13 of the dextrose equivalent) as the glycosyl donor, 10%(w/v) dextrin (13 of the dextrose equivalent) as the glycosyl donor, 10%(w/v) xylitor as the glycosyl acceptor, 20mL/h of medium fiow rate, and 6$0^{\circ}C$. The maximum yield of transglycosylated xylitol and productivity were 25% and 7.82 g.L-1.h-1, respectively. The half-life of the immobilized CGTase in a column type packed bed reactor was longer than 30 days.
The resistance to the passage of airflow through various agricultural products is an important consideration in the design of an aeration or drying system. The amount of resistance to airflow varied widely from one kind of grain to another, and depended upon airflow rate, surface texture and shape of the particles, the size and configuration of voids, and foreign and fine material in the grain bed. The airflow rate was the major factor considered on this kind of study in the early stages. But these days, the studies on the resistance to airflow of grain affected by grain moisture content and foreign and fine material have been widely carried out. However the foreign an fine material in the grain bed could not be a major factor on the study in Korea because there were only a few grain process procedure after harvesting it. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of moisture content and airflow rate on airflow resistance to grain, and to develop a model to predict the static pressure drop across the grain bed as a function of moisture content and airflow rate. The rough rice varieties, Akibare, Milyang 15 (Japonica types), Samkwang, Backyang (Indica types)and covered barley variety, Olbori, which were harvested in 1985 were used in the experiment after cleaning them. Resistances to airflow of grain were investigated at four levels of moisture content (13-25%, wb.) for ten different airflow rates($0.01-0.15m^3/sm^2$). The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. Theaverage bulk densities were $585.3kg/m^3$ for rough rice and $691.6kg/m^3$ for barley at the loose fill, and were $648.8kg/m^3$ for rough rice and $758.2kg/m^3$ for barley at the packed fill. The pressure drops at the packed fill beds were approximately 1.4 to 1.8 times higher than those at the loose fill beds. 2. The pressure drops across grain beds deceased with the increase of moisture content and increased with airflow rate. The decreasing rates of pressure drop across grain beds according to the moisture contents at the lower airflow rates were higher than those at the higher airflow rates, and the increasing rates of pressure drop according to the airflow rates at the lower moisture contents were higher those at higher moisture contents. 3. The pressure drop across barley bed were much higher than rough rice beds and the pressure drops across Japonica type rough rice beds were a little higher than Indica type. 4. The mathematical models to predict the pressure drop across grain beds as a function of moisture content and airflow rate were developed from these experiments.

Mixed-mode hydrophobic/ionic matrices exhibit a salt-tolerant property for adsorbing target protein from high-ionic strength feedstock, which allows the application of undiluted feedstock via an expanded bed process. In the present work, a new type of mixed-mode adsorbent designed for expanded bed adsorption, Fastline $PRO^{\circledR}$, was challenged for the capture of nattokinase from the high ionic fermentation broth of Bacillus subtilis. Two important factors, pH and ion concentration, were investigated with regard to the performance of nattokinase ad-sorption. Under initial fermentation broth conditions (pH 6.6 and conductivity of 10 mS/cm) the adsorption capacity of nattokinase with Fastline PRO was high, with a maximum capacity of 5,350 U/mL adsorbent. The elution behaviors were investigated using packed bed adsorption experiments, which demonstrated that the effective desorption of nattokinase could be achieved by effecting a pH of 9.5. The biomass pulse response experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the biomass/adsorbent interactions between Bacillus subtilis cells and Fastline PRO, and to demonstrate a stable expanded bed in the feedstock containing Bacillus subtilis cells. Finally, an EBA process, utilizing mixed-mode Fastline PRO adsorbent, was optimized to capture nattokinase directly from the fermentation broth. The purification factor reached 12.3, thereby demonstrating the advantages of the mixed-mode EBA in enzyme separation.

MEMS catalytic combustors were fabricated to use in micro-power sources as a heat source. The combustor was fabricated by photolithography and anisotropic wet etching of photosensitive glass wafers. Two different catalyst loading methods were used to complete the fabrication of the combustors. For thin film type, the $Al_2O_3$ was washcoated on the surface of the combustion chamber as a catalyst support, and for packed-bed type, ceramic foam was inserted after Pt was coated. The volume of the combustors was 1.8 $cm^3$ and 16W of heat was generated using the fabricated combustors with hydrogen. The energy density of combustor was about 8.9 W/$cm^3$.
Two mesophilic trickling bed bioreactors filled with two different types of media, hydrophilic- and hydrophobic-cubes, were designed and tested for hydrogen production via anaerobic fermentation of sucrose. Each reactor consisted of a column packed with polymeric cubes and inoculated with heat-treated sludge obtained from anaerobic digestion tank. A defined medium containing sucrose was fed with changing flow rate into the capped reactor, hydraulic retention time and recycle rate. Hydrogen concentrations in gas-phase were constant, averaging 40% for all conditions tested. Hydrogen production rates increased up to $10.5 L{\cdot};h^{-1}{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of reactor when influent sucrose concentrations and recycle rates were varied. Hydrophobic media provided higher value of hydrogen production rate than hydrophilic media at the same operation conditions. No methane was detected when the reactor was under a normal operation. The major fermentation by-products in the liquid effluent of the both trickling biofilters were acetate and butyrate. The reactor filled with hydrophilic media became clogged with biomass and bio gas, requiring manual cleaning of the system, while no clogging occurred in the reactor with hydrophobic media. In order to make long-term operation of the reactor filled with hydrophilic media feasible, biofilm accumulation inside the media in the reactor with hydrophilic media and biogas produced from the reactor will need to be controlled through some process such as periodical backwashing or gas-purging. These tests using trickling bed biofilter with hydrophobic media demonstrate the feasibility of the process to produce hydrogen gas in a trickle-bed type of reactor. A likely application of this reactor technology could be hydrogen gas recovery from pre-treatment of high carbohydrate-containing wastewaters.

The adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was carried out using an activated carbon fiber (ACF) filter in an automobile. The adsorption capacities of formaldehyde, toluene, and benzene on an ACF filter were far better than those of a polypropylene (PP) mat filter and combined (PP+activated carbon) mat filter by batch adsorption in a gas bag. In a continuous flow of air containing toluene vapor through an ACF packed bed, the breakpoint time was very long, the length of the unused bed was short, and sharp "S" -type breakthrough curve was plotted soon after breakpoint, showing a narrow mass transfer zone of toluene on the ACF. The adsorption amount of toluene on the ACF filter was proportional to the specific surface area of the ACF; however, the development of mesopores 2-5 nm in size on the ACF was very effective with regard to the adsorption of toluene. The ACF air clarifier filter is strongly recommended to remove VOCs in newly produced automobiles.
It has known that the intermediates formed in acid reactions occuring during anaerobic reactions for instance, acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid have significant effects or the formations of biogases(e. g. mainly CH$_{4}$ and CO$_{2}$). A study on the effects of these intermediates for the formations of biogases, however, is still on initial stage due to the type and structural problems of reactor. The primary objective of this reserch program is to provide a funadmantal mechanism of involved reactions using a modified downflow multistage pecked bed bioreactor. As a first stage of this reaserch program, the following theoretical principles was applied 1. Principle of electroneutrality where the molar concentrations of cation and anion in solution are the same. 2. Relationship between the concentration of bicarbonate anion and pH as follows [HCO$_{3}^{-}$]= $K_{H}P_{T}Y_{CO_{2}}10^{pH-K_{1}}$ Based upon the above two principles, a series of experimental works was conducted to elucidated the relationship between the concentration of CO$_{2}$ and the pH related to the concentrations of cations and anions.
