  • The ferroelectric domain variation and electrical performance of $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_{3}$ (PZT) based capacitors through La additions were systematically studied. La substitution up to 10 % was performed to lower the coercive and saturation voltages of epitaxial ferroelectric capacitors grown on Si using a (Ti_{0.9}Al_{0.1})N/Pt$ conducting barrier composite. Ferroelectric capacitors substituted with 10 % La show significantly lower coercive voltage compared to capacitors with 0 % and 3 % La. This is attributed to a systematic microstructure change into $180^{\circ}C$ domain and decrease in the tetragonality (i.e., c/a ratio) of the ferroelectric phase. These capacitors show promise as storage elements in low power memory architectures.

  • This study investigates free vibration characteristics of new energy harvesting multi-layer block structures with different geometrical shapes using solid and shell finite elements and evaluate their piezoelectric effect on experiments. The two and three-dimensional finite element (FE) delamination models for block structures described in this paper is attractive not only because it shows excellent accuracy in analysis but also it shows the entire vibration mode shape. The FE model using ABAQUS is used for studying free vibrations of multi-layer block structures for various tip mass and PZT. In particular, new results reported in this paper are focused on the significant effects of the global and local vibration modes for various parameters, such as size of block shape, existence of tip mass and hole, and location of tip mass and PZT. In addition, we evaluate the power generation capacity of developed energy block structures through a laboratory-scale experiment.

  • Twelve kinds (1set) standard materials of chemical ingredients of lead zirconate titanate[$Pb(ZrTi)O_3$] have been developed in order to determine fast and accurate measurement of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Especially, we used diluted(ahout sixteen times) filling compound($Li_2B_4O_7/LiBO_2=4/1$) to consider removal effect of matrix, storage convenience, and homogenous characteristics. As a result from the four different laboratories, we obtained extremly good agreement about the standard curve on twelve standard materials which containing eleven elements, PbO, $ZrO_2$, $TiO_2$, SrO, $WO_3$, $La_2O_3$, $Cr_2O_3$, MgO, $Nb_2O_5$, and $MnO_2$. The correlation factor of standard curve was over 0.998. However, ZnO has relatively low correlation factor, 0.977, because the concentration was 10ppm lower than other original materials. This analysis reveals that ZnO has shown the poor linearity as well as low fluorescence intensity. In present work, XRF standard materials are useful for determining a rapid and accurate results for major and minor elements concentration among PZT.

  • Damping out high frequency low amplitude structural vibrations using PZT bimorph is presented. Static and Dynamic analyses of the piezoelectric bimorph bender were performed. Three layer piezoelectric actuators were modeled with SOLID5 coupled-field elements using ANSYS. Static deflection and modal analyses of the piezoelectric bimorph bender are presented. Proper tuning of the values of the resistor and inductor in the shunt circuit is required for maximum vibration suppression.

  • In recent years, as the demands of VBNS and VDSL increase, the development of kernel parts of optical communication such as PLC(Planar Light Circuit), Coupler, and WDM elements increases. The alignment and the attachment technology are very important in the fabrication of optical elements. In this Paper, the optical alignment characteristic of multi-axis ultra precision stage is studied. The alignment algorithms are studied for applying to the ultra precision multi-axis stage. The alignment algorithm is comprised of field search and peak search algorithms. The contour of optical power signals can be obtained by field search and the precise coordinate can be found out by peak search. Three kinds of alignments, such as 1 ch. input vs. 1 ch. output optical stack, 1 ch. input vs. 8 ch. output PLC stacks, and ferrule vs. ferrule, are performed for investigating the alignment characteristics.

  • Recently, machining process monitoring technique based on AE(acoustic emission) signal is used widely and becomes very important technique in machining process for improving the efficiency and the confidence of the systems. In this study, we fabricated a cheap acoustic emission sensor and monitoring system and estimated the properties of them through comparing with commercial AE sensor systems. In addition, we evaluated the performance of the fabricated sensor in polishing process. Futhermore, we are scheduled to develop the multi-point polishing process monitoring system through fabrication of the more AE sensors and complement of the monitoring system.

  • Micropump is very useful component in micro/nano fluidics and bioMEMS applications. Using the flexural vibration mode of PZT bar, a piezopump is successfully made. The PZT bar is polarized with thickness direction. The proposed structure for the piezo-pump consists of an input and an output port, piezoelectric ceramic actuator, actuator support, diaphragm. The traveling flexural wave along the bar is obtained by dividing two standing waves which are temporally and spatially phase shifted by 90 degrees from each other. Fluid is drawn into a forming chamber, eventually the forming chamber closes trapping the fluid therein. The finite elements analysis on the proposed pump model is carried out to verify its operation principle and design by the commercial FEM software. Components of piezopump were made, assembled, and tested to validate the concepts of the proposed pump and confirm the simulation results. The performance of the proposed piezopump the highest pressure level of 83.4kHz.

  • In this paper, the electromechanical displacements of curved piezoelectric actuators composed of PZT ceramic and laminated composite materials are calculated based on high performance computing technology and the optimal configuration of composite curved actuator is examined. To accurately predict the local pre-stress in the device due to the mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion, carbon-epoxy and glass-epoxy as well as PZT ceramic are numerically modeled by using hexahedral solid elements. Because the modeling of these thin layers increases the number of degrees of freedom, large-scale structural analyses are performed through the PEGASUS supercomputer, which is installed in our laboratory. In the first stage, the curved shape of the actuator and the internal stress in each layer are obtained by the cured curvature analysis. Subsequently, the displacement due to the piezoelectric force (which is resulted from applied voltage) is also calculated. The performance of composite curved actuator is investigated by comparing the displacements obtained by the variation of thickness and elastic modulus of laminated composite layers. In order to consider the finite deformation in the first analysis stage and include the pre-stress due to curing process in the second stage, nonlinear finite element analyses are carried out.

  • The communication through optical fiber is taking an important role of the expansion of communication network with excellent transmitting rate and quality. As the optical communication is introduced to the backbone network at first and becomes a general communication method of network, the demand of kernel parts of optical communication such as PLC(Planar Light Circuit), Coupler, and WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) element increases. The alignment and the attachment technology are very important in the fabrication of optical elements. In this paper, the driving mechanism of ultra precision stage is studied with the aim of optimal design of stage. The travel and the resolution of stage are investigated. The hysteresis of the stage is generated because of PZT actuator. The hysteresis and the inverse hysteresis are modeled in X, Y, and Z-axis motion. The input data of desired displacement of the stage according to input voltage is obtained from the inverse hysteresis equation. In the result of experiments with the input data, the errors due to hysteresis are well compensated.
