Characteristics of corrosion fatigue strength of TiN coating steel (TiN 피복강재의 부식피로강도특성)

  • In order to investigate the effect of TiN coating on corrosion fatigue behavior of metal, the rotary bending corrosion fatigue tests were carried out in 3% NaCl solution by using the round bar specimens of high-speed steel, SKH-9, coated with TiN by PVD method. From the experimental results, fatigue strength of TiN coating steel in air was obvious improvement as compared with that of the substrate because of the restriction of dislocation movement in near surface of the substrate by hard thin film. In 3% NaCl solution, corrosion fatigue life of TiN coating specimen in high stress level was improvement same as in air. But in low stress level, corrosion fatigue life of TiN coating one was equivalent to that without coating, due to much crack initiated from corrosion pits formed at the substrate by failure of coating layer.

  • Engine power cylinder parts are faced with more severe wear and friction environment. For instance, emission gas recirculation (EGR), one of the most valid technologies related to emission legislation, is known to accelerate wear of piston ring and cylinder liner. Therefore, advanced materials and surface treatments have been developed and adopted successively so that a need exists for an accurate and repeatable friction and wear bench test for various combination of piston ring and cylinder liner that more closely relates to engine test result. This paper introduces accelerative bench wear test method for piston ring and cylinder liner, presents the experimental result of friction and wear properties of piston ring surface treatments that noticed in substitution for hard chrome plating.

  • Blend membranes were prepared by solvent casting method from sulfonated fluorinated poly(arylene ether)s (SDFF) and chemically modified polyvinylidene fluoride (mPVdF) in isopropanol and were evaluated as proton exchange membrane electrolytes in PEMFC. $^1H$-NMR, differential scanning calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis was utilized to characterize the structure of the blend membranes (SDFF/mPVDF) and effects of mPVDF content on the properties of the membrane such as water uptake and proton conductivity were also investigated.

  • In order to determine the wear properties of AIP (Arc Ion Plating) deposition, wear process was evaluated by using a Falex test machine. Also, in order to determine the effects of coating material on the wear process, TiC, TiN, and TiCN coatings of thickness about 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$∼6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ coated by Arc ion plating deposition method were tested. The wear property was determined under a dry sliding condition as a function of the applied load, sliding distance, sliding velocity and temperature. The results show that when wear of the coating-layer occurred, specific wear amount increased with the wear rate. At initial state, the wear rate rapidly increased, but it gradually reduced as the velocity increased. Also, when raising the temperature, the wear rate increased in the order of TiCN, TiN and TiC due to the frictional heat.

  • In this research KP-4, one of the plastic mold steels, was coated with the AlTiN from one layer to four layers by the PVD method in the $\Phi$ cemented carbide ball end mill. Coated KP-4 was processed with various conditions. For example, slope of $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ the spindle rotation speed was changed from 10,000rpm to 16,000rpm, the tool feeding speed was changed from 1,300mm/min to 1,700mm/min, the depth of cut was also changed from 0.3mm to 0.9mm, and etc. Cutting component force according to the coating layer number, surface roughness, and the wear of tool were studied.

  • 실용금속 중 가장 가볍고, 비강도 및 방진성 등이 우수한 Mg을 증발금속으로 하여 무공해 PVD방법중 하나인 진공증착(Vacuum Deposition)법으로 기판(Al 및 Zn기판) 상에 박막을 제작하였다. 부식환경 중 강판상의 마그네슘막은 약 -1300mV/SCE의 비한 전위값을 가지며 $Mg{\rightarrow}Mg^{2+}+2e^-$ 반응에 의해 기판의 부식을 방지한다. 본 실험에서 제작한 Mg막의 부식시험 결과에 의하면 졀정입이 미세한 입상정의 몰포로지가 내식성이 가장 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 여기서 Mg코팅 제작 프로세스에 대한 기초적인 설계 지침을 제시하였고 기존의 강판에서 대두되는 내식성에 대한 문제를 보완할 수 있을 것이라 사료된다.

  • Preliminary studies were conducted to develop a dimensionally stable anode (DSA)electrode prepared by reactive sputtering method. The microstructure, surface morphology and electrochemical properties of iridium oxide $(IrO_2)$ coatings synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering (UBMS) and conventional DSA electrode were compared. In addition, the possibilities of $IrO_2$ films synthesized by UMB on a real DSA electrode were investigated by electro-chemical application test. The degree of non-stoichiometry and surface area were closely related to the electro-chemical activity of the $IrO_2$ electrode. The feasibility of making a DSA electrode prepared by PVD technique was demonstrated through the present work.

  • This paper describes a power supply aimed at the production of plasma and its control method for a magnetron sputter in thin film coating process of PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition). Plasma load changes its impedance characteristic easily according to operating conditions and frequently produces electric arc. So. in this paper, a plasma power supply with improved output control performance in the transient state for the plasma load is presented. Also, it includes a strategy that can detect arc rapidly and reduce arc energy effectively into a load. The validity of the proposed power supply through experimentation on 20kW system was proved.

A Study on Wear Life and Mechanisms of TiN Coated Bearing Balls against Steel Disks (TiN 박막 처리될 베어링 볼의 마모 수명 및 메커니즘에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the results of the repeated sliding tests to determine the wear-life of TiN coated AISI 52100 bearing balls deposited by PVD method and to show the wear mechanisms of those. The sliding tests were carried out using a ball-on-disk tribometer under ambient conditions. The coefficient of friction, wear volume and the cycles to failures of TiN coated bearing balls were measured with different normal loads and roughness of lower specimens. On the wear-life diagram, the normal loads and the cycles to failure showed the good linear relation on log-log coordinate. With a decreasing normal load, the diagram showed that the wear-limits, at which the coated bearing balls survived more than 4000cycles were under 0.1N of the normal load.

  • For decades, sputtering as a physical vapor deposition (PVD) method has been a widely used technique for film coating processes. The sputtering enables oxides, metals, alloys, nitrides, etc to be deposited on a wide variety of substrates from silicon wafers to polymer substrates. Meanwhile, transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) have played important roles as electrodes in electrical applications such as displays, sensors, solar cells, and thin-film transistors. TCO films fabricated through a sputtering process have a higher quality leading to an improved device performance than other films prepared with other methods. In this review, we discuss the mechanism of sputtering deposition and detail the TCO materials. Related technologies (processing conditions, materials, and applications) are introduced for electrical applications.
