  • Recent work at USC has focused on strategies to enhance the toughness and overall mechanical performance of polymer foams for use in lightweight sandwich structures. Both mechanical and chemical approaches have been employed with reasonable success. Fiber reinforcement, though difficult from a processing perspective, can lead to substantial enhancements in toughness and strength, while reducing friability. Chemical modifications are also challenging from a processing perspective, but can produce similar enhancements in performance. Efforts to enhance performance of phenolic foam and PVC foam through fiber reinforcement and chemical modification are described, along with the resulting enhancements in performance.

  • All solid rocket propellants are divided in two basic classes according to chemical state: homogeneous(double base) and heterogeneous (composite). Today, composite propellants are extensively used as power sources covering the range from gas generators and small rocket systems to large launch vehicles in space programs. The development of composite rocket propellants in the past was mainly directed to thermoset polymers. But, the thermoset composite propellants have the complication in formulation and fabricating process to adapt to rocket system requirements. In contrast to the thermoset propellant, the PVC plastisols composite propellants have the advantages in the view of loss in manufacturing process, low cost of raw material, and stability of the handling process even though moderate ballistic and mechanical properties. It is predicted that the application field of this class will be used more widely than any other classes.

  • An experimental study of eleven PVC-FRP Confined Concrete (PFCC) column-Reinforced Concrete (RC) beam joints reinforced with Core Steel Tube (CST) under axial compression is carried out. All specimens are designed in accordance with the principle of "weak column and strong joint". The influences of FRP strips spacing, length and steel ratio of CST, height and stirrup ratio of joint on mechanical behavior are investigated. As the design anticipated, all specimens are destroyed by column failure. The failure mode of PFCC column-RC beam joint reinforced with CST is the yielding of longitudinal steel bars, CST and stirrups of column as well as the fracture of FRP strips and PVC tube. The ultimate bearing capacity decreases as FRP strips spacing or joint height increases. The effects of other three studied parameters on ultimate bearing capacity are not obvious. The strain development rules of longitudinal steel bars, PVC tube, FRP strips, column stirrups and CST are revealed. The effects of various studied parameters on stiffness are also examined. Additionally, an influence coefficient of joint height is introduced based on the regression analysis of test data, a theoretical formula for predicting bearing capacity is proposed and it agrees well with test data.

  • The aim of this study was to develop the noise and vibration damping wood-based composites by using viscoelastic polymer materials. Polyvinylchloride(PVC) was plasticized with 20-140 phr bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(DOP) and the dynamic tensile mechanical properties were measured at 110Hz and approximate temperature range -100 to 150$^{\circ}$ using a Rheovibron Instrument. The PVC/DOP blends were shown to be compatible in all proportions, and both T(E”$_{max}$) and T(tan${\delta}_{max}$) shifted to the lower temperature side as the DOP content increased. The vibration damping properties of wood/polymer composites were measured using the Rheovibron instrument in a bending mode. The composite damping factor(tan ${\delta}_{c}$) of wood /PVC-DOP/wood sandwich structure correlated with the loss factor and that of the coated structure correlated with the loss modulus(E”) of the polymer layer. In addition, the sandwich structure was found to be more effective in damping than the coated structure. The logarithmic decrement (${\Delta}$c) curve of a sandwich structure, which was determined by the free-free flexural vibration method was similar in shape to the tan ${\delta}_{c}$ curve.

  • To investigate the stress-strain relation of PVC-FRP Confined Concrete (PFCC) column with RC ring beam joint subjected to eccentric compression, the experiment of 13 joint specimens, which were designed with principle of "strong joint and weak column", were presented. Several variable parameters, such as reinforcement ratio, width and height of ring beam, FRP strips spacing and eccentricity, were considered. The specimens were eventually damaged by the crushing of concrete, the fracture of PVC tube and several FRP strips. With the FRP strips spacing or eccentricity increased, the ultimate carrying capacity of specimens declined. The strain of FRP strips and axial strain of PVC tube decreased as FRP strips spacing decreased. The decrease of eccentricity would slow down the development of strain of FRP strips and axial strain of PVC tube. The slope of stress-strain curve of PFCC column decreased as FRP strips spacing or eccentricity increased. The ultimate strain of PFCC column reduced as FRP strips spacing increased, while the effect of eccentricity on the ultimate strain of PFCC was not distinct. Considering the influence of eccentricity on the stress-strain relation, a modified stress-strain model for conveniently predicting the weak PFCC column and strong RC ring beam joint under eccentric compression was proposed and it was in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • In this study, we have performed several tests for composite plastic materials to be applied on interior materials of a vehicle to identify their combustion characteristics using cone calorimeter, smoke density chamber and toxicity index chamber. We have prepared a total of 12 samples for 4 major parts of a vehicle wherein each major part has 3 different materials. The results of cone calorimeter test showed ignition time of PVC sheet and PVC leather were 2s. The 8 samples showed under less than 10s of ignition time. The sample comprising Nylon and PE had the biggest maximum heat release rate of 635 $kW/m^2$. The sample comprising Rubber showed the smallest maximum heat release rate but with the biggest total heat release. The results of smoke density chamber test showed the sample that is made up with Rubber had the biggest specific optical smoke density. The sample comprising PVC leather and PUR showed the biggest VOF4 which enables the initial smoke production. The results of toxicity index test showed that all samples contained carbon dioxide content exceeding its lethal concentration. The sample comprising PVC showed high content of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen bromide. The PVC sheet showed the biggest toxicity index calculated by using lethal concentration and test results. Toxicity index of all sample wes over 1.

  • This paper describes the optimum design of bolt locations for metal joint parts of railway bogie frame made of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite and PVC foam core. The optimum design analysis was done by sub-problem approximation method using Ansys Parameter Design Language(APDL). The sub-modeling method was introduced to conduct the detailed recalculation for the only target parts and reduce calculating time. The structural analysis for composite bogie frame was performed according to JIS E 4207. The results showed that the optimum design analysis using sub-modeling method was able to obtain faster and more precise results than that of the entire model by the control of mesh size for the target parts, and the maximum Von-Mises stress has been reduced in comparison with its original dimensions due to the optimum design of bolt locations.

  • In this paper, parametric study was carried out to design sandwich structures for EDM machines controlling stacking sequence, stacking thickness of composites and rib configuration. Sandwich structures which are dealt with in this paper are composed of fibre reinforced composite for skin material and foam or resin concrete for core materials. The sandwich column has cruciform rib to enhance bending stiffness of the structure and the bed has several vertical ribs to resist the normal forces and vibration. The design parameters such as rib thickness and stacking sequence were controlled to enhance the system robustness. Finite element analysis was also carried out to verify the variation of static and dynamic stiffness of the structures according to the variation of the parameters. Vibration tests were performed to verify the natural frequencies and damping ratios of the manufactured composite structures. The appropriate shape and configuration conditions for micro-EDM machine structures are proposed.
