  • Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) from which atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is derived, is always noncrystalline. This was attributed to the irregular steric arrangement of the acetyl groups in PVAc. However, the X-ray diffraction patterns of atactic PVA, a derivative of PVAc, were found to show distinct crystallinity, and to give an identity period of 2,52 ${\AA}$ along the fiber axis, despite the expectation of an irregular arrangement of the hydroxyl groups in atactic PVA, in the same manner as that of the acetyl groups in PVAc.(omitted)

  • Recently, people are gradually concerned about environmental issue, bionics, environmental-friendly or biocompatible materials. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is suitable for these materials, because it is typically water-soluble polymer that have linear-flexible chains, a material of no toxicity for human, and biodegradable polymer[1]. One of the most effective factors that dominate the properties of PVAs is tacticity. (omitted)

  • Centrifugal spinning is an emerging technique for fabricating micro-to-nano-fibers in recent years. To obtain fibers with the desired size and morphology, it is necessary to configure and optimize the parameters used in centrifugal spinning. In this study, it was controlled by changing the solution's concentration (7.5, 10, and 12.5 wt.%) and disk's rotational velocity (6,000, 8,000, and 10,000 rpm) to prepare centrifugal spun nano-filter. The morphological property, air permeability, and dust collection efficiency of the PVA/PP bi-layer nanoweb prepared by centrifugal spun PVA on the PP micron nonwoven substrate are studied using a field emission scanning electron microscope, an air permeability tester, and a filter tester equipment, and the analysis results indicate that it is suitable as a nano-filter when the concentration of PVA solution is 10 wt.% and the rotational velocity of the disk is 8,000 rpm. The resultant reduced diameter and uniform fibers also proved that an excellent dust collection efficiency filter could be made.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a common hydrophilic polymer that is synthesized through the saponification reaction of poly(vinyl ester)-based polymers, mostly using poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) as a precursor. The heterogeneous saponification reaction of poly(vinyl ester)-based films leads to PVA films with new surface properties. Cellulose acetate (CA), in which the hydroxyl group of cellulose is replaced by an acetyl group, is a typical cellulose derivative capable of overcoming the low processability of cellulose due to strong hydrogen bonding. In this study, P(VAc/VPi)/CA blended films were prepared by the solvent casting, and then PVA/Cellulose blended films with improved surface properties were prepared by heterogeneous saponification. The structural changes caused by heterogeneous saponification were confirmed by FT-IR analysis, where both saponification and deacetylation reactions occurred in the saponification solution. In addition, the surface property changes were analyzed by FE-SEM and contact angle analyses, and the transmittance changes of the modified films were also assessed.

  • The objective of the current study is to evaluate the effects depending on the types of reinforcing fibers being influential in view of mechanical properties and impact resistance of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) for applications to precast concrete structure. Hybrid fibers applied therefor were three types such as PP/MSF (polypropylene fiber+macro synthetic fiber), PVA/MAF (polyvinyl alcohol fiber+MSF) and JUTE/MSF (natural jute fiber+MSF), where the volume fraction of PP, PVA and natural jute was applied with 0.2 %, respectively, while based on 0.05 % volume fraction of MSF. The HFRC was tested for slump, compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance. The test result demonstrated that mixture of such hybrid fibers improve compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance of concrete. Moreover, it was found that HFRCs to which hydrophilic fibers, i.e. PVA/MSF and JUTE/MSF, were mixed show more improved features that HFRC to which non-hydrophilic fiber, i.e. PP/MSF was mixed. Meanwhile, the finding that PVA/MSF HFRC exhibited better performance than JUTE/MSF HFRC was attributed from the former having higher aspect ratio than that of the latter.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) composite films were prepared by casting a DMSO solution of PVA and MWNTs, whereby the MWNTs were dispersed by sonication. A significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the PVA drawn films was achieved by the addition of a small amount of MWNTs. The initial modulus and the tensile strength of the PVA drawn film increased by 30 % and 45 %, respectively, with the addition of 1 wt% MWNTs, which are close to those calculated from the rule of mixtures, and were strongly dependent upon the orientation of the PVA matrix. The mechanical properties, however, were not improved with a further increase in the MWNT content. The orientation of MWNTs in the composite was not well developed compared to that of the PVA matrix. This result suggests that the improvement of the molecular orientation of the PVA matrix plays a major role in the increase of the mechanical propeties of the drawn PVA/MWNT composite films.

  • This paper discusses the role of micro and macrofibers in the workability, compressive strength, and failure of cementitious composites. Workability(flow), compressive strength, splitting strength and fracture mechanism of hybrid fiber reinforced cement composites(HFRCC) have been investigated by means of Korean Standard (KS). The specific blend pursued in this investigation is a combination of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) and steel cord. It was demonstrated that a hybrid combination of steel and PVA enhances fiber dispersion compared to only steel cord reinforced cement composites and that the brittle and wide cracking was much reduced in HFRCC as expected because in the matrix containing the PVA fiber around the steel cord, a multiple microcracking occurred and the steel cord could sufficiently work for bridging the cracked surface.

  • In this study, I examined hardening and non-hardening of the DFRCC (Ductile Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites) according to maximum size of coarse aggregate and the diameter of PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol) to develope PVA fiber reinforced concrete with the feature of DFRCC. As a result of this study, the fresh properties is similar regardless of maximum size of coarse aggregate. The bending stress and bending stress-displacement of DFRC showed big differences according to maximum size of coarse aggregate and diameter.
