Modeling of shunt active power filter using PSCAD/EMTDC

  • In this paper, a shunt active power filter (SAPF) has been used to eliminate the harmonic distortion and to improve the power quality of three-phase grid-connected power conditioning system (PCS). The adopted control strategy in active power filter system is based on the instantaneous reactive power theory (P-Q theory). Based on the theoretical analysis, the overall system of three-phase grid-connected with non-linear load PCS has been built and modeled using PSCAD$^{(R)}$/EMTDC$^{TM}$. The simulation results are shown to verify the high effective performance of the implemented SAPF in power system and to verify the reasonableness of the system structure.

  • 각각의 분산전원 시스템은 등가회로를 이용하여 수학적으로 모델링하고, 이를 결합하여 제어 가능한 하이브리드 시스템을 모델링 하였다. 시뮬레이션과 실험 결과로부터, 분산 전원의 출력을 안정적으로 운영 할 수 있고, 효율적으로 부하관리를 할 수 있어 계통 운영을 여유롭게 할 수 있었다. 이러한 연구는 출력 변동으로 인해 마이크로 그리드 내 설치가 어려운 제어 불가능한 전원인 태양광 발전의 설치용량 확대를 가져올 수 있을 것이다.

Novel Islanding Detection Method for Distributed Generation Interconnected with Utility Grid (계통연계 분산전원의 새로운 단독운전 판별기법)

  • This paper describes the development of a novel islanding detection method, which uses the signal cross-corelation scheme between the injected reactive current and the power frequency deviation. The existing method, which injects the reactive current of 2.5-5% to the rated current and detects the frequency deviation directly, brings about lowing the power quality due to the harmonic pollution. The proposed method eliminates the weak point of the existing method, because it injects the reactive current less than 1% to the rated current. The operational feasibility was verified through computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC software, and experimental works with a 10kVA hardware prototype. The proposed method can detect the islanding status effectively without lowing the power quality of interconnected distributed generation system.

  • In this paper, new electric railway feeding system which has active transformer is modeled for evaluating the steady state analysis using PSCAD/EMTDC. Equivalent models including power supply, feeder, train and transformers are proposed for simplifying the model of the feeding system in high speed electric railway. In case study, simulation results applied to proposed model are compared with the conventional and new systems through the catenary voltage, three-phase voltage of PCC (Point of Common Coupling) and the efficiency of regenerative braking energy.

  • A high temperature superconducting power cable (HTS power cable) was applied large current capacity by no resistance in normal state. Fault state was risen out of over-current but, it was limited to resistance. This study was modeling equivalence, and unbalanced state analyzed operating characteristic of HTS power cable. The equivalence model was composed superconductor, shield, and former part. This model simulation was appeared conductor and shield current in normal state, but unbalanced state was appeared former current as rise current by resistance. So it need to sufficiently influenced the quench characteristic when the former design.

  • Generator of hydroelectric generating unit is to be protected by the digital protection IED. Now, any IED of large capacity for hydro power plant was not developed by domestic technology. This is because it is required for the generator of the high reliability technology and considered as due to the sale of the market of IED device is small. However, the protection IED must be develop by domestic technology to meet the advanced needs of the construction and replacement of electrical equipment in accordance with the new power plant development. In this paper, a digital algorithms for protection IED of large size of hydroelectric generating unit were designed. The algorithms consist of the stator protection, anti-motoring, overexcitation and loss of excitation. The performance of the algorithms were evaluated by using the simulation data collected from the PSCAD/EMTDC software. From test results, it can be seen that the developed algorithms were not maloperation.

  • This paper presents a method for DC voltage control of HVDC system connection of offshore wind farms. In the event of fault in AC grid, HVDC system need to meet LVRT regulations. When HVDC system meet LVRT regulation, unbalance is caused between power input and power output for DC link. Therefore, LVRT regulation lead to DC voltage increase of HVDC system. To control the DC voltage increase, the chopper resistor can be suggested. In this paper, DC voltage suppression is proposed using chopper resistor and de-loading. The effectiveness of the chopper resistor was verified using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • This paper proposes new series and parallel Sin+Cos PSS(power system stabilizer) for the purpose to improve the existing PSS1A's performance. The purpose of PSS is used to enhance damping of power system oscillations through injection of auxiliary signal for an excitation control terminal. The Proposed series and Parallel Sin+Cos PSS is connected adding the Sin+Cos terms additionally with serial and with parallel connection in a conventional PSS1A. The proposed controller is aim to considering of a damping of oscillation when it changes parameter fluctuations or operational load variations in a power system. The object of electric power system is KEPCO system and the voltage of power transmission line is a 154kV and a 345kV. The PSCAD/EMTDC package is used to authorize the effect of the proposed controller. Simulations were shown by and compared with the waveforms for frequency, voltage and electric power.

  • Since the discovery of the high temperature superconductors many researches have been performed for the practical applications of superconductivity technologies in various fields. As results, significant progress has been achieved. Especially, Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) offers an attractive means In limit fault current in power systems. HTS resistive type SFCL is based on the ultra fast transition from the superconducting (non resistive) state to the normal (resistive) state by overstepping the critical current density, In this study, the simulation method of resistive type superconducting fault current limiter using EMTDC is proposed and the developed EMTDC model of SFCL is applied to the modeled power network using the Parameters of real system.

  • This paper proposes a small low-cost power quality compensator to be installed at the electricity supply inlet of residential customer. The compensator is composed of a single-phase active power filter with a simple controller using analog electronics, which can correct the power factor and damp out the harmonics. The operation and performance of proposed compensator was verified through simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC and experimental works with hardware prototype. The proposed compensator can offer reduction of power loss and improvement of power quality to the residential customer.
