A Simplified Numerical Model for an Integral Abutment Bridge Considering the Restraining Effects Due to Backfill

  • This paper presents the simplified but more rational analysis method for the prediction of additional internal forces induced in integral abutment bridges. These internal forces depend upon the degree of restraint provided tc the deck by the backfill soil adjacent to the abutments and piles. In addition, effect of the relative flexural stiffness ratio among pile foundations, abutment, and superstructure on the structural behavior is also an important factor. The first part of the paper develops the stiffness matrices, written in terms of the soil stiffness, for the lateral and rotational restraints provided by the backfill soil adjacent to the abutment. The finite difference analysis is conducted and it is confirmed that the results are agreed well with the predictions obtained by the proposed method. The simplified spring model is used in the parametric study on the behavior of simple span and multi-span continuous integral abutment PSC beam bridges in which the abutment height and the flexural rigidity of piles are varied. These results are compared with those obtained by loading Rankine passive earth pressure according to the conventional method. From the results of parametric study, it was shown that the abutment height, the relative flexural rigidity of superstructure and piles, and the earth pressure induced by temperature change greatly affect the overall structural response of the bridge system. It may be possible to obtain more rational and economical designs for integral abutment bridges by the proposed method.

Planning and Design of Monorail Bridges (모노레일 교량의 계획 및 설계)

  • Monorail System has many advantages compared with other Urban Lightweight Transit Systems, such as the friendliness of the vehicle's appearance, slenderness of the bridge structures, it's low construction cost and short construction period. So, lots of city governments have reviewed or proposed the Monorail System as the attractive alternative system. And recently, Daegu Metropolitan City Government have chosen the Monorail System for the Urban Railroad Line 3. According to these trends on Urban Lightweight Transit Systems, this paper has introduced the outline of the planning and design of Monorail Bridges. At first, trends of overseas Monorail Bridges have been reviewed and the principal design criteria adopted in the basic design of the Urban Railroad Line 3 for Daegu have been introduced. And next, the methods of planning, design, fabrication of the guideway beams which are made of PSC Beam or Steel Beam have been explained. We hope this paper be helpful for the Engineers who are interested in the Monorail Bridges.

Study on Design Vehicle Loads of South and North Korean Highway Bridges (남북한 도로교 설계트럭하중 분석)

  • PURPOSES: This study is to analyze different vehicle load effects for a bridge design of South and North Korea in order to prepare a common design specification and to secure the safety of transportation when the highway bridges of South and North Korea use together. METHODS: Based on the literature review, this study considers vehicle load effects by comparing different characteristics of the standard vehicle and other differences of the bridge design specification between South and North Korea. And structural modeling of three-span continuous PSC Beam Bridge are analyzed and the bridge capacity according different vehicle loads of South and North Korea is evaluated. RESULTS: The result of this study indicates that the bridge capacity and the design vehicle weight of North Korea are smaller than the bridge capacity and the design vehicle weight of South Korea. Also this study demonstrates that the design vehicle array and other characteristics of North Korea are very different than the design vehicle array and other characteristics of South Korea. CONCLUSIONS: It is expected that the outcomes of this study can be useful in the set-up of South-North Bridge Specification because similar previous studies are rarely found.

  • The full-width, full-depth precast panel system is very efficient for the rehabilitation of deteriorated decks as well as for new bridge construction.. The horizontal bond strength at the interface between the two interconnected elements is of primary importance in order to achieve composite action. The strength of the bond between the two precast members should be high enough to prevent any progressive slip from taking place. However, the case when both of the interconnected elements are precast members bonded by means of grout, is not currently addressed by KBDC or AASHTO. This is the main impetus for this study. A total 43 push-off tests were performed to evaluate the horizontal bond strength and to recommend the best practice for the system. Test parameters included different interface surface conditions, different amount and different types of shear connectors. The presence of the shear keys at the top surface of the beam increased the interface bond capacity tremendously compared to the bond capacity with a different surface conditions.

  • This study attempts to analyze estimating process and the level of information performing literature review and questionnaire and identify phased influence factors on construction cost using phased information of project and suggests framework of approximate estimation model at the planning and design stage.   • This study aims at giving the framework to estimate the environmental load at planning and schematic phase. With increasing awareness of environmental issues, the effort to reduce the environmental impacts caused by human activity has been increasingly enlarged. So far most of researches estimating CO2 emissions have analyzed energy consumption based on BOQ (Bills of Quantity) acquired after detailed design. There is also lack of reliability in the estimated environmental impact using the basic unit of a facility at the planning stage, because it uses a limited specific section of historical data. Thus, this study is targeted at developing framework to assess reliable environmental loads based on information available at project early phases by making case-bases from historical design information on PSC Beam Bridge. Historical database is built on the basis of the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and in order to set input information for estimating model, the literature about information in an early project phase are reviewed. Using the information available in the planning and schematic design stage, the Framework is presented to estimate the environmental load in an early stage in the project. Developing an environmental load estimation model in accordance with the Framework presented in this study, it is expected that the environmental load in the initial project phase can be estimated more quickly and accurately.

  • 본 논문에서는 현행 표준적인 P.S.C거더 교량의 적정 가로보 수를 위한 매개변수 연구를 수행하였다. 교량의 길이는 P.S.C거더교로서 국내에서 가장 흔히 사용되는 30m의 단순교를 채택하였다. 교량의 해석방법으로는 상부의 슬래브와 거더를 효율적으로 모델링하기 위하여 정밀해석법인 유한요소법을 사용하였다. 본 연구에서 사용된 매개변수로는 크게 두 가지로 분류되는데, 하나는 사용된 가로보의 개수이고 다른 하나는 교량의 사각(Skew)이다. 상부 슬래브는 쉘 요소와 빔 요소를 연결하는데 효율적인 회전자유도를 가지는 쉘 요소로 모델링 하였다. 슬래브와 거더의 중심축이 이격되어 있는 문제를 정확히 고려하기 위하여 편심보 요소를 사용하였다. 해석 모델은 가로보가 각각 7,5,3개 있는 경우를 선정하였다. 이러한 조건하에서 정적 해석을 수행하여 최대 휨모멘트, 전단력, 비틀림 모멘트값을 구하여 현행 시방서에서 규정된 극한치를 만족하는지 검토하였다. 검토결과 현재 사용되고 있는 P.S.C거더 교량에서의 가로보 개수는 과다한 것으로 판단되며 경제적인 설계를 위하여 가로보의 개수를 줄일 수 있을 것으로 제안하였다.

  • An improved finite element modeling technique is proposed for the assessment of load carrying capacity partilly prestressed concrete beam bridges. Based on the finite element method of analysis, shell and frame elements are utilized to model the slab and beams of the superstructure, respectively. In the modeling of superstructure, the emphasis is placed on the use of rigid link between the middle surface of slab and mid-plane of beam. This paper also includes the comparision of three different equations that used in the calculation of effective moment of inertia for the partially prestressed concrete beams. Numerical analysis is performed for the unstrengthened and strengthened bridges. The obtained results are compared with those of load test for a prototype bridge. Agreement with the numerical solutions by using the proposed method and load test results is generally excellent.

Design of End Diaphragms in PSC Box Girder Bridges Using a Strut-and-Tie Model (스트럿-타이 모델을 이용한 PSC 박스거더 교량의 End Diaphragm의 설계 연구)

  • In recent, the design of diaphragm which is representative disturbed region in PSC box girder bridge have been performed according to the empirical method or beam theory. But, these methods couldn't be described the behavior of the end diaphragm, and placed reinforcements accurately. As the compressive stress transferred by the web concentrated on the lower parts of diaphragm, it was demonstrated that the basic assumption of 2-D strut-and-tie model for the diaphragm that the compressive stress acts on the upper parts of the diaphragm is wrong. Meanwhile, in this research, after analyzing the variables of end diaphragm, the 2-D strut-and-tie models appropriate to each cases are proposed. And, the problems of 2-D strut-and-tie model were analyzed, so 3-D strut-and-tie model is proposed as well. There is no codes which include the demonstration of safety of 3-D strut-and-tie model. Hence, for nodes, the stresses at the elements which included the singular node in strut-and-tie model were investigated using the finite element analysis. And, the stress states of strut has one direction, so effective stresses were considered at the stage, dimensioning of the model. From the results, 3-D strut-and-tie model could predict the behavior of end diaphragm accurately, and design of reinforcement could be performed economically.

Application of Artificial Neural Network Model for Environmental Load Estimation of Pre-Stressed Concrete Beam Bridge (PSC Beam교 환경부하량 추정을 위한 인공신경망 모델 적용 연구)

  • Considering that earlier stage of construction project has a great influence on the possibility of lowering of environmental load, it is important to build and utilize system that can support effective decision making at the initial stage of the project. In this study, we constructed an environmental load estimation model that can be used at the early stage of the project using basic design factors. The model was constructed by using the artificial neural network to estimate environmental load by applying to planning stage (ANN-1), basic design stage (ANN-2). The result of test, shows that average of absolute measuring efficiency and standard deviation of ANN-1 and ANN-2 were 11.19% / 5.30% and 9.59% / 3.09% each. This result indicates that the model using the input variables extended with the project progress has high reliability and it is considered to be effective in decision support at the initial design stage of the project.
