  • UV curing technology becomes important in various sectors of applications due to the high efficiency, environmental protection and saving energy. Above all, It is necessary to consider the formulation of glass fiber sizes in some detail to achieve this study since they are governed by the products to be made and their performance in the composites made form them. The effect of glass fiber sizes against UV curing system was investigated by the method of changing size formulation. Nanosil 700 was used in order to increase curing efficiency. Yellow effect was not observed at the 1% fiber sizer content.

  • Composite bipolar plates offer several advantages of low cost, light weight, and ease of manufacturing compared to traditional graphite plate. However, it is difficult to achieve both high electrical conductivity and high flexural strength. In this study, the hybrid carbons filled epoxy composite bipolar plates were fabricated to test electrical conductivity and flexural properties. Graphite powders were used as the main conducting filler and continuous carbon fiber fabrics were inserted to improve the mechanical properties of the composite. This hybrid composite showed improved in-plane electrical conductivity and flexural property. The moldability of the hybrid composite was also improved comparing to the continuous prepreg composite. This study suggested that the continuous carbon fiber inserted graphite/epoxy composites can be a potential candidate material to overcome the disadvantages of conventional graphite composite or continuous prepreg composite bipolar plates.

  • Fiber placement system (FPS) carries out an advanced composites process which orients high strength reinforcing fibers in specific directions. The process includes wet winding, thermoset tape winding, thermoset prepreg placement and thermoplastic prepreg placement. FPS have the advantage of tape laying and filament winding with computer control and software. Using FPS can reduce costs, cycle times, structural weight, and handwork/rework when manufacturing composite parts. The sleeve extension is a part of the helicopter rotator systems. In this study, The sleeve extension composites were manufactured using FPS and tensile properties of this composites were characterized using universal testing machine(UTM).

  • The CFRP composite has a lot of merits such as mechanical characteristic, light and thermal resistance. For these merits, CFRP is applied to so many industrial area. In order to use the composite materials in the aircraft structures or machine elements, accurate surfaces for bearing mounting or joints must be provided, which require precise, machining. In this study, the specimens differentiating the stacking sequence of 5kinds were used. When drilling the carbon fiber reinforced plastics, it was checked on whether the stacking sequence reached any effect on the cutting force. Also relationship between the drill diameter is examined from the drilling experiment, which is the drilling of Fabric, Unidirectional specimen with ∅6mm, ∅10mm, ∅12mm cemented carbide drill. Considering cutting force and drilling diameter, the results are analyzed.

  • In this study, the interlaminar fracture behaviors of laminated GFRP composites were investigated, and the results could be used for damage tolerance design based on fracture mechanics. Three types of laminated GFRP composites that can be used as high voltage insulating materials in magnet systems were fabricated in order to study the interlaminar fracture behavior according to the molding process. The values of interlaminar fracture toughness for the VPI, prepreg, and HPL laminate were $1.9MPa{\cdot}^{1/2}$, $1.7MPa{\cdot}^{1/2}$, and $2.2MPa{\cdot}^{1/2}$, respectively. HPL laminate showed the best fracture resistance. The failure modes of HPL and VPI were similar to that of an adhesive joint, and prepreg laminates showed partial cohesive failure mode due to internal voids.

  • An issue of major concern in the utilization of laminated composites based epoxy resin is associated with the occurrence of delaminations or interlaminar cracks, which may be related to manufacturing defects or are induced in service by low-velocity impacts. A strong interfacial filament/brittle epoxy resin bonding can, however, be combined with the high fracture toughness of weak interfacial bonding, when the filaments are arranged to have alternate sections of shear stress. To improve this drawback of the epoxy resin, UV-thermal dual curable resin were developed. This paper presents UV-thermal dual curable resin which were prepared using epoxy acrylate oligomer, photoinitiators, a thermal-curing agent and thermoset epoxy resin. The UV curing behaviors and characteristics of UV-thermal dual curable epoxy resin were investigated using Photo-DSC, DMA and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of UV-thermal dual curable epoxy resin impregnated CF prepreg by UV curable resin content were measured with Tensile, Flextural, ILSS and Sharpy impact test. The obtained results showed that UV curable resin content improves the epoxy toughness.

  • Long-fiber-reinforced composites have the advantages of cost-competitiveness and high degree of freedom of molding compared to continuous-fiber-reinforced composites. On the other hand, it is difficult to ensure uniform characteristics due to the randomly distributed fiber orientation incurred from the process of manufacturing intermediate materials. In this study, the effect of the directionality of LFPS (Long Fiber Prepreg Sheet) materials on the mechanical properties was analyzed. The eddy current measurement method was used to analyze fiber orientations, and tensile and compression tests on LFPS materials were performed according to ASTM standards. In addition, the test results and theoretical values of LFPS materials were verified using the ROM (rule-of-mixtures) theory. These results confirmed the effect of fiber orientation on mechanical properties of discontinuous-fiber-reinforced composites.

  • Blades of horizontal axis are nowadays made of composite materials. Generally, composite materials satisfy design provides lower weight and good stiffness, while laminate composites have often damages as like the delamination and cracks at the interface of laminates. The box spar and tail parts of a blade are composed of the CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites. However, delamination and the interfacial crack often occur in the interface of CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites under the mixed mode fracture condition, especially mode I and mode II. Therefore, there is a need for the evaluation of the mixed mode fracture behavior during the delamination of CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminates. This study shows the experimental results for the delamination fracture toughness in CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composites. Fracture toughness experiments and estimation are performed by using DMMB(Dissimilar mixed mode bending) specimen. The materials used in the test are a commercial woven type CFRP(Carbon fiber reinforced plastic) prepreg(CF3327) and UD type GFRP(Glass fiber reinforced plastic) prepreg(HD224A). A CFRP/GFRP hybrid laminate composite is composed by the 10 plies CFRP and GFRP prepreg for DMMB. A thickness of CFRP and GFRP layer is 2.5mm and 3.0mm, respectively. Also the fulcrum location which is a loading parameter is changed from 80 to 100mm on the specimen of length 120mm because it defines the ratio of mode I to mode II. In this study, the effects of the fulcrum location are evaluated in the viewpoint of energy release rate in mode I and mode II contribution. The results show that the delamination crack initiates at higher displacement and lower load according to the increase of the fulcrum location ratio. And the variation of the energy release rate for mode I and II contributions for the mode mixity are shown.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced composites have light weight and high mechanical properties. These materials are only applicable in limited shape structure cause by complex curing process and low drapability. To solve this problem, Long Fiber Prepreg Sheet (LFPS) has been proposed. In this research, electric device cover plate was selected and designed by using LFPS. Before the design process, we analyzed the target structure to which the rib structures were applied. And 8-inch tablet PC product was selected. For FE analysis, simple loading and boundary conditions were applied. Stiffness of rib structure was investigated according to the rib pattern and shape changes. Rib pattern and shape were selected based on fixed volume condition analysis results. And uneven rib width model was selected for the best case whose deflection was reduced 6~10% than uniform rib model.
