  • This paper describes a real-time reliable measurement and analysis system for ubiquitous healthcare based on IEEE802.15.4 standard. In order to obtain and monitor physiological body signals continuously, wearable pulse oximeter is designed in wrist that could used to measure oxygen saturation of a patient unobtrusively. The measured data was transferred to a central PC or server by using wireless sensor nodes via a wireless sensor network for storage and analysis purposes. LabVIEW server program was designed to monitor and process the measured photoplethysmogram(PPG) to accelerated plethysmogram(APG) by appling second order derivatives in server PC. These experimental results demonstrate that APG can precisely describe the features of an individual's PPG and be used as estimation of vascular elasticity for blood circulation.

  • A black-box program was implemented in order to monitor abnormal symptoms of human body irregularly occurring during sleep. The system consists of sensor probing body signals, auxiliary devices such as the alarm, lamp, network camera, and signal monitoring computer. Various types of sensors, PPG, ECG, EEG, temperature, respiration sensor, G-sensor, and microphone were used to more exactly identify the causes of abnormal symptoms. If a symptom occurs, the system records the patient's condition to provide information being utilized in the treatment. The sensors are attached on some locations of body being proper to check a specific type of abnormal reaction. Based on the normal range and type of measurement data, criteria of signal levels were set to distinguish abnormal reaction. An abnormal signal being probed, the program starts to operate the lamp, alarm, and network camera at the same time and stores the signal and video data.

  • A sensor network system can be an efficient tool for healthcare telemetry for multiple users due to its power efficiency. One drawback is its limited data size. This paper proposed a real-time application of data compression/decompression method in u-Health monitoring system in order to improve the network efficiency. Our high priority was given to maintain a high quality of signal reconstruction since it is important to receive undistorted waveform. Our method consisted of down sampling coding and differential Huffman coding. Down sampling was applied based on the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem and signal amplitude was taken into account to increase compression rate in the differential Huffman coding. Our method was successfully tested in a ZigBee and WLAN dual network. Electrocardiogram (ECG) had an average compression ratio of 3.99 : 1 with 0.24% percentage root mean square difference (PRD). Photoplethysmogram (PPG) showed an average CR of 37.99 : 1 with 0.16% PRD. Our method produced an outstanding PRD compared to other previous reports.

  • This paper presents a smartphone-attachable vascular compliance monitoring module. The proposed sensor module measures photoplethysmogram (PPG) and reconstructs an accelerated PPG waveform. The feature points are extracted from the accelerated PPG waves, and vascular compliance is estimated using these extracted features. The module is powered via the smartphone's USB terminal and transmits the acquired waveforms along with vascular compliance values through Bluetooth. The transmitted waveforms and vascular compliance value are displayed through the smartphone application. This work proposes an assessment method for consistency of PPG instrumentation, and it was implemented in a processor of sensor module. The proposed sensor module can be easily attached to smartphone that does not support PPG instrumentation, providing simple measurment and numerical analysis of vascular compliance. To verify the performance of the implemented sensor module, we acquired vascular compliance and pulse pressure data from 29 subjects. Pulse pressure, which serves as a representative indicator of vascular compliance, was obtained using a commercial blood pressure monitor. The analysis results showed that the Pearson coefficient between vascular compliance and pulse pressure was 0.778, confirming a relatively high correlation between two metrics.

  • With development of wearable devices, there is an increased interest in bio-signal monitoring techniques that can measure the user's health condition. However, embedding several bio-signal sensors in one wearable device has some inherent problems in terms of limited resources such as its size. Furthermore, such problem also arise when new bio-signal sensors are added. In this paper, we introduced the Bio-Cradle, which is a Plug-in module that can transfer the biological signals in real time from the accelerometer, ECG, or PPG sensor to other wearable devices at the request from the user of wearable devices. When the Bio-Cradle plugged in to the other device, it can transfer several synchronized bio-signals regardless of the type of device.

  • Recently, To provide various service for user, there are some trends to construct health care system using bio-sensors and wireless network technologies. Accordingly, An effective middleware is needed to manage and control the various bio-sensors. Also, it is important to extend network and interoperate the various application system in healthcare service. In this paper, we propose to be connected with network based on UPnP by design and implementation of UPnP-ZigBee bridge. The proposed UPnP-ZigBee bridge manage and control ZigBee sensor module effectively. we implemented and tested ECG, PPG, and environment sensor module based on ZigBee wireless network to apply in health care service.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm for estimating blood pressure using ECG (Electrocardiogram) and PPG (Photoplethysmography) signals. To estimate the BP (Blood pressure), we generate a periodic input signal, remove the noise according to the differential and threshold methods, and then estimate the systolic and diastolic blood pressures based on the convolutional neural network. We used 49 patient data of 3.1GB in the MIMIC database. As a result, it was found that the prediction error (RMSE) of systolic BP was 5.80mmHg, and the prediction error of diastolic BP was 2.78mmHg. This result confirms that the performance of class A is satisfied with the existing BP monitor evaluation method proposed by the British High Blood Pressure Association.

  • In this study, we study that the video attributes captured by built-in camera in smart-phone can effect on the quality of PPG signal. The conditions of video attributes were composed of the bitrate, the resolution, the flash. As each condition, we measured a change in the red value of the video image and calculated a PPI(Pulse to Pulse Interval) for extracting the pulse wave signal. 20 subjects participated in the experiment and this experiment was carried out 18 tasks. The PPG signal was measured simultaneously for two minutes with the PPG sensor in the middle finger and Smart-phone in the forefinger of the right hand. By proceeding the correlation analysis, we obtained the highest correlation condition(83%, p=0.01), which the resolution was $640{\times}480$, bitrate was 5000kbps, flash was on. As a result, this study will be a useful guide for quality of signals in the pulse signal measurement system using built-in camera in smart-phone.

  • In this paper, a danger signal to tell caregivers when a dangerous situation occurs, the bio-signal analysis in infants to prevent sudden infant death sudden infant death propose a monitoring system. The Sudden infant death (SID) refers to a healthy baby is unexplained deaths between birth year in the month. Sudden infant death proposed monitoring system is composed of a processor unit and the monitoring and alarm part for processing part and the biological signal sensing biological signals. Using the PPG sensor to sense the bio-signal and the processor unit the signal obtained through the sensor by removing the motion artifact was able to alarm and monitoring the parent. The proposed system will send the alarm to monitoring and alerting caregivers if the risk situation by analyzing the heart rate of the infant. With the actual implementation of the system to evaluate the performance of the monitoring system.
