Real-Time Tuning of the Active Vibration Controller by the Genetic Algorithm (유전자 알고리즘을 이용한 능동진동제어기의 실시간 조정)

  • This paper is concerned with the real-time automatic tuning of the positive position feedback controller for smart structures by the genetic algorithms. The genetic algorithms haute proven its effectiveness in searching optimal design parameters without falling into local minimums thus rendering globally optimal solutions. The advantage of the positive position feedback controller is that if it is tuned properly it can enhance the damping value of a target mode without affecting other modes. In this paper, we develop for the first time a real-time algorithm for determining a tuning frequency of the PPF controller based on the genetic algorithms. To this end, the digital PPF control law is downloaded to the DSP chip and a main program, which runs the genetic algorithms in real time, updates the parameter of the controller in real time. Hence, any kind of control including the positive position feedback controller can be used in adaptive fashion in real time. Experimental results show that the real-time tuning of the positive position feedback controller can be achieved successfully. so that vibrations are suppressed satisfactorily.

  • For lightweight and flexible structures, it is important to suppress the vibrations induced by interactions between fluid and structures. This paper presents the PPF/Adaptive control of the vortex-induced vibration of composite beam with rigid cylinder in which the fluid force is considered as an external excitation on the structure. For the problems considered here, the excitation frequency (vortex-shedding frequency) is assumed to be equal to the natural frequency of the structure. A pair of piezoceramic devices attached bottom of the composite structure was used as actuators. Simulation and experiment were carried out with the designed controller and effectiveness of the PPF/Adaptive PPF control was verified by both experimental and simulation results.

  • This research is concerned with the multiple PPF and the modified LQG controller design for active vibration control of intelligent structures. The intelligent structure is defined as the structure equipped with smart actuators and sensors. Various control techniques aimed for the piezoceramic sensors and actuators have been proposed for the active vibration control of smart structures and some of them prove their effectiveness experimentally. In this paper, the multiple PPF controller and the modified LQG controller are developed and applied to the smart grid structure. The multiple PPF control and the modified LQG control can be classified as the classical and the modern control techniques. respectively. The experimental results show that both control techniques are effective in suppressing vibrations.   • This paper is concerned with the active vibration control of grid structure by means of piezoceramic actuators and sensors. The control technique used in this paper is based on the positive position feedback(PPF) and the strain rate feedback(SRF) control, which have been successfully used for the vibration control of beam structures. A new control methodology is developed using the PPF and SRF controller of single-input single-output method. The PPF controller is used for the suppression of first bending mode and SRF controller is used for the suppression of higher vibration modes of grid structure. Electric circuits for the realization of control schemes are explained in detail. The control techniques prove its effectiveness by experiments.

  • This paper is concerned with the digital implementation of the active vibration suppression controller. The digital controllers are often implemented on the DSP board, which is very fast but expensive. There are many low-cost micro-controllers in the market but the feasibility of such micro-controllers for the active vibration suppression has never been conducted. In this study, we selected PIC 16F877 as a proper micro-controller for the digital implementation of the PPF controller. The circuit diagrams are explained in detail. Experimental results show that the low-cost micro-controller can be used as the active vibration controller.

  • Coil inductor has been used widely as an electromagnet, because of the high magnetic filed resulting from the voltage applied to the coil. In this study the coils were used in vibration suppression as an actuator. The control system consists of a coil attached in aluminum beam and a permanent magnet set at its bottom. This actuation method is easy to be incorporated into the system and allows significant forces to be applied without contacting with the structure. Three types of coils (cylindrical type, square type, Circular sheet type) were employed in vibration suppression of cantilever beam. The positive position feedback (PPF) controller was applied to the magnet-coil actuator to suppress the first mode of vibration. Experimental results showed that the cylindrical type and square type coil made good vibration suppression efficiency under PPF controller than their eddy current damper. However, there was minimal difference for the circular sheet type coil if compared with its eddy current damper.

  • In this research, using Terfenol-D actuator composed of magnetostrictive material as shaker and controller, active vibration control theory was applied and verified by experiments. PPF(positive Position Feedback) algorithm which is effective for the control of low frequency vibration was used for the control of a structure. Responses of inputs due to various design variable used for the PPF filter were observed. To investigate the characteristics of magnetostrictive materials, actuator responses were measured for known inputs and satisfactory results were obtained to reduce the vibration level after applying the control input for the actuator.

A Study on the Valid Dynamic Modeling for the Slewing and Vibration Suppression Control of Beam (보의 회전 및 진동제어를 위한 동적 모델 타당성 연구)

  • This research is concerned with the validation of the modeling technique and controller design for slewing beam structures. When cantilever beam rotates about axes perpendicular to the undeformed beam's longitudinal axis, it experiences inertial loading. Hence, the beam vibrates from the initial stage of slewing. In this paper, the analytical model for a single slewing flexible beam with surface bonded piezoelectric sensor and actuator is developed using the Hamilton's principle with discretization by the assumed mode method. Comparisons with the theoretical model are made based upon the frequency responses and time responses. A new factor called the coupling coefficient is introduced to incorporate the discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental results. The slewing is achieved by applying the PID control, which is found to be less sensitive to vibrations. The vibrations are controlled by PPF controller, which is found to be effective in suppressing residual vibrations after slewing. The vibrations occurred during slewing is difficult to control because the piezoceramic actuator is not powerful enough to overcome inertial loadings.

Measurement System of Photosynthetic Photon Flux Distribution and Illumination Efficiency of LED Lamps for Plant Growth

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a measurement system for determining photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) distribution and illumination efficiency of LED lamps. Methods: The system was composed of a linear moving sensor part (LMSP), a rotating part to turn the LMSP, a body assembly to support the rotating part, and a motor controller. The average PPF of the LED lamp with natural cooling and water cooling was evaluated using the measurement system. Results: The PPF of LED lamp with water cooling was 3.1-31.7% greater than that with natural cooling. Based on the measured value, PPF on the horizontal surface was predicted. Illumination efficiency of the LED lamp was slightly increased with water cooling by 3.4%, compared with natural cooling. A simulation program using MATLAB was developed to analyze the effects of the vertical distance from lighting sources to growing bed, lamp spacing, and number of LED lamps, on the PPF distribution on the horizontal surface. The uniformity of the PPF distribution of the LED lamps was fairly improved with 15 cm spacing, as compared to the 5 cm spacing. By simulation, PPF of $217.0{\pm}27.9{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ was obtained at the vertical distance of 40 cm from six LED lamps with 12 cm spacing. This simulated PPF was compared to the measured one of $225.9{\pm}25.6{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. After continuous lighting of 346 days, the relative PPF of LED lamps with water cooling and natural cooling was decreased by 6.6% and 22.8%, respectively. Conclusions: From these results, it was concluded that the measurement system developed in this study was useful for determining PPF and illumination efficiency of artificial lighting sources including LED lamp.
