  • This paper deals with the experimental study of the vibration suppression of the smart structures. First, a new high-speed active control system is presented using the DSP320C6713 microprocessor. A peripheral system developed is composed of a data acquisition system, A/D and D/A converters, piezoelectric (PZT) actuator/sensors, and drivers using PA 95 for fast data processing. Next, the processing time of the peripheral device is tested and the corresponding test results are provided. Since fast data processing is very important in the active vibration control of the structures, achieving the fast loop times of the control system is focused. The control algorithm using PPF in addition to FIR filter is implemented. Finally, numerous experiments were carried out on the aluminum plate to validate the superior performance of the vibration control system at different control loop times.

  • Biodegredable and injectable nanocomposites based on polypropylene fumarate (PPF) as unsaturated polyester were prepared. The investigated polyester was crosslinked with three different monomers namely N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and a mixture of NVP and MMA (1:1 weight ratio) and was filled with 45 wt% of hydroxyapatite (HA) incorporated with different concentrations of chemically treated natural bone powder (NBP) (5, 10 and 15 wt%) in order to be used in treatment of orthopedics bone diseases and fractures. The nanocomposites immersed in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 30 days, after the period of immersion in-vitro bioactivity of the nanocomposites was studied through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) in addition to dielectric measurements. The degradation time of immersed samples and the change in the pH of the SBF were studied during the period of immersion.

  • Polypropylene Fibers have been used to increase the toughness of concrete and to increase the resistance to crack formation. However, there are many contradictory argument about the effectiveness of the fiber due to the lack of knowledge about the mechanism of fiber in concrete. One of the mechanism which changes the concrete properties on the addition of fiber is the change of the micropore structures. In this study, the change of pore structure due to the addition of fiber has been analysized by a permeability and a pore size distributuion test. The added fiber is found to provide a path for moisture movement, which increases drying shrinkage and pore size. It is found that the size of pores formed around the fiber ranges from $0.05{\mu}m$ to $5.0{\mu}m$.

  • Many types of smart materials and control laws are available to actively adjust the structure from various external disturbances. Usually, a certain type of control laws to activate a specific smart material is well established, but the effectiveness of the control scheme is limited by the choice of the smart materials and the responses of the structure. ER fluid is adequate to provide relatively large control force, on the other hand, the PZT patches are suitable to provide small but arbitrary control forces at any point along the structure. It was found that active vibration control mechanism using ER fluid failed to suppress the excitation off the resonant frequency with changed structural characteristics along the frequency response function of the closed loop of the control system. To compensate this additional peak of the closed loop system, PPF control using PZT as an actuator is added to construct a hybrid controller.

  • CFRD(Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) face slab concrete has a much capability to occur crack due to drying shrinkage, plastic shrinkage and bad compaction etc. Because of these cracks of concrete induce structural problem and decrease durability of dam, it is need to reduce crack of face slab concrete. This is an experimental study to analyze the influence factors on crack properties of CFRD face slab concrete. For this purpose, various mix proportion of CFRD face slab concrete and concrete using PPF(polypropylene fiber0 and fly ash was selected. And tests for drying shrinkage, bonding strength, water permeability and plastic shrinkage were performed, and then CFRD D and PPC of those mix proportion were placed in CFRD field. According to test results, it was found that the bonding strength of C1(compact sufficiently) was higher about 10~20% than that of C2(compact insufficiently). And the engineering properties of PPC(concrete using PPF) and FAC(concrete using fly ash) were better than those of the others ; the permeability of PPC and FAC after 8 weeks curing was little lower than that of CFRD D, and plastic shrinkage crack of PPC and FAC was lower 40~60% than crack of CFRD D.

  • In a deregulated electricity market, congestion of the transmission lines is a major problem the independent system operator (ISO) would face. Rescheduling of generators is one of the most practiced techniques to alleviate the congestion. However, not all generators in the system operate deterministically and independently, especially wind power generators (WTGs). Therefore, a novel optimal rescheduling model for congestion management that accounts for the uncertain and correlated power sources and loads is proposed. A probabilistic power flow (PPF) model based on 2m+1 point estimate method (PEM) is used to simulate the performance of uncertain and correlated input random variables. In addition, the impact of direct electricity purchase contracts on the congestion management has also been studied. This paper uses artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm to solve the complex optimization problem. The proposed algorithm is tested on modified IEEE 30-bus system and IEEE 57-bus system to demonstrate the impacts of the uncertainties and correlations of the input random variables and the direct electricity purchase contracts on the congestion management. Both pool and nodal pricing model are also discussed.

  • In this paper, three types of operational and industrial absorbers used at research reactors, including Ag-In-Cd alloy, $B_4C$, and Hf are selected for sensitivity analyses. Their integral effects on the main neutronic core parameters important to safety issues are investigated. These parameters are core excess reactivity, shutdown margin, total reactivity worth of control rods, thermal neutron flux, power density distribution, and Power Peaking Factor (PPF). The IAEA 10 MW benchmark core is selected as the case study to verify calculations. A two-dimensional, three-group diffusion model is selected for core calculations. The well-known WIMS-D4 and CITATION reactor codes are used to carry out these calculations. It is found that the largest shutdown margin is gained using the $B_4C$; also the lowest PPF is gained using the Ag-In-Cd alloy. The maximum point power densities belong to the inside fuel regions surrounding the central flux trap (irradiation position), surrounded by control fuel elements, and the peripheral fuel elements beside the graphite reflectors. The greatest and least fluctuation of the point power densities are gained by using $B_4C$ and Ag-In-Cd alloy, respectively.

  • This paper describes the self healing characteristics of a metalized polypropylene film(MPPF) by voids under a.c condition. PDIVs were increased with the number of pre-self healing due to void defects, and several pre-self healing events took place at lower voltage than the critical breakdown voltage of a PPF. Self healing mainly occurred at pin tips, wrinkle sides, and cross points of wrinkles, and the main self healing voltage was increased with PPF thickness. The burn out area at self healing was increased with the applied voltage, and the peak currents in a grounding conductor at self healing was also increased with the applied voltage.

  • The advantages of polypropylene fibers in concrete have been widely advertised abroad. However, the behavior of concrete containing plastic fibers has not been fully understood. In order to study the effect of fibers on possible crack control, the effects of fikrs on workability and drying shrinkage have been studied. 'The workability change due to the addition of fibers has been studied. and full size concrete slabs have been cast at field to investigate the effect of fibers on the shrinkage properties. Moisture absorption characteristics of fibers has also been studied. The addition of fibers was found to reduce workability significantly and required additional water to maintain the workability, which caused increased drying shrinkage depending on the amount of addition, but strength has not been changed significantly.

  • A new single phase half-bridge cascaded multilevel inverter based series active power filter (SAPF) is proposed. The main parts of the inverter are presented in detail. With the proposed inverter topology, any compensation voltage reference can be easily obtained. Therefore, the inverter acts as a harmonic source when the reference is a non-sinusoidal signal. A 31-level inverter based SAPF with the proposed topology, is manufactured and the voltage harmonics of the load connected to the point of common coupling (PCC) are compensated. There is no need for a parallel passive filter (PPF) since the main purpose of the paper is to represent the compensation capability of the SAPF without a PPF. It is aimed to compensate the voltage harmonics of the load fed by a non-sinusoidal supply using the proposed inverter. The validity of the proposed inverter based SAPF is verified by simulation as well as experimental study. The system efficiency is also measured in this study. Both simulation and experimental results show that the proposed multilevel inverter is suitable for SAPF applications.
