  • Polypropylene (PP)/talc compounds with talc content of 20wt% were fabricated by master-batch (MB) and direct compounding method using injection molding. The MB was prepared by mini compounder at $200^{\circ}C$ and the content of talc was 50wt%. The talc dispersion of the PP/talc compound was investigated by SEM-EDS. The talc was well dispersed within PP matrix in case of the MB-PP compound using MB. The rheological properties of the PP/talc compounds were measured by dynamic Rheometer. The MB-PP compound indicates higher shear thinning and elastic property than direct compound. The disperion of talc was certified by G'-G" plot, and Van Gurp-Palmen analysis was applied in order to certify an increase in elasticity.

  • Effects of $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ and boron compounds ($Na_2B_4O_7:H_3BO_3=5:1\;ratio$) on the flame retarding characteristics of the surface modified wood powder-filled polypropylene composites were studied experimentally. The mechanical properties of m-phenylene dimaleimide(PDMI)-modified polypropylene composite were also compared with those of unmodified one. The flame retardance of $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$-modified wood powder composites was more improved than that of boron compounds-modified one. The impact strength of composites increased and the tensile strength of those decreased progressively with an increase of wood powder loading. The mechanical properties of modified polypropylene composites are more improved than those of unmodified one. The tensile strength also increased marginally with increasing the concentration of flame retardants, yielding a maximum when the concentration of flame retardant is 25.0 wt %. And the tensile strength of the composite was increased up to 16 wt % with increasing concentration of PDMI.

  • SAPO-11 was applied for the first time to the catalytic pyrolysis of miscanthus and random polypropylene (random PP). Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that SAPO-11 promoted the dehydration of miscanthus while suppressing the formation of char. In the pyrolysis of random PP, the decomposition temperature and activation energy were reduced by using a catalyst. A large fraction of levoglucosan, which was the main oxygenate product from the non-catalytic pyrolysis of miscanthus, was converted to high value-added products, such as furans, phenolics and aromatics using SAPO-34. The catalytic pyrolysis of random PP produced gasoline- and diesel-range hydrocarbons.

  • In this study, a series of bi-axially oriented films based on homo polypropylene (PP) and hydrocarbon resin (HCR) modified PP were prepared to investigate their mechanical properties, optical properties, permeability to gases and water vapors and shrinkage ratio. Hydrogenated dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) resin and hydrogenated C9 resin were used as HCR in this study. Bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films made with PP/HCR blends showed better mechanical properties (higher Young's modulus), better optical properties (lower haze), lower permeability to gases and water vapors and increased shrinkage ratio than BOPP films made with homo-PP. Hydrogenated DCPD resin and hydrogenated C9 resin showed similar contribution to the improvement in mechanical properties and optical properties of BOPP films, but there are a differences in permeability to gases and water vapors and shrinkage ratio.

  • In this study, we have investigated mechanical properties and scratch resistance of polypropylene compounds by two types of masterbatch with different molecular weight of PP. Masterbatches were prepared with polypropylene(PP) and polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) by melt mixing. Mechanical properties and scratch behavior were examined with UTM and polarizing microscope. The morphology surface of grain pattern was investigated Color 3D Laser Scanning Microscope. Mechanical properties of two masterbatches containing PP compounds showed a little bit difference in accordance with amount of M/B. Scratch resistance was much improved by adding masterbatches used high-molecular weight PP. Scratch resistance was excellent when grain pattern of the surface is deep, large, round and irregular.

  • The waste tire powder is modified with allylamine in the presence of ultraviolet radiation and the influence of surface modification on the thermal and rheological properties of polypropylene/waste tire powder composites was investigated. X-ray diffraction studies of PP/waste tire powder composite without compatibilizer, such as maleic anhydride-g-polypropylene (MA-PP), shows the increase in peak intensity of ${\beta}$ crystalline peaks, whereas it completely disappears in the presence of the MA-PP. Differential scanning calorimetry results further supported the above fact. The melt viscosities and storage modulus of the composites with modified waste tire powder show higher value than that of composites with unmodified powder and it is attributed to the interaction between amine group on modified powder surface and maleic anhydride of MA-PP.

  • The melt grafting of unsaturated silanes onto polypropylene (PP) in a twin-screw extruder and crosslinking in hot water were studied to enhance impact strength of polypropylene. The influence of grafting formulations on the melt flow rates of grafted PP and the gel percentages of crosslinked PP was investigated. 3-methacryloylpropyltrimethoxysilane (VMMS) unsaturated silane monomer was used. Benzoyl peroxide, (BPO) and Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) were used as an initiator. When benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was used as an initiator, higher gel percentage and impact strength than those of DCP has been observed. The maximum impact strength was obtained with 0.7 phr of BPO and 2phr of VMMS. The value is 8.7 kgf-cm/cm and it is on a parity with the value of with 20 phr of EOR mixed to PP.

  • BACKGROUND: In recent years, studies on microplastics have focused on their decomposition in the ocean. However, no studies have been reported on the interaction between microplastics and metal ions in aqueous solutions. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the adsorption capacity of cadmium(Cd) by polypropylene (PP) in aqueous solution. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cadmium adsorption characteristics of PP in aqueous solution were evaluated through various conditions including initial Cd concentration(1.25-25 mg/L), contact time(0.5-24 h), initial pH(2-6) and temperature($20-50^{\circ}C$). Cadmium adsorption fit on PP was well described by Freundlich isotherm model with adsorption capacity(K) of 0.028. The adsorption amount of Cd by PP increased with increasing contact time, indicating that adsorption of PP by Cd was dominantly influenced by contact time. Especially, the removal efficiency of Cd by PP was highest at high temperature. However, the surface functional groups of PP before and after adsorption of Cd were similar, suggesting that adsorption of Cd by PP is not related to surface functional groups. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that PP affects the behavior of Cd in aqueous solution. However, in order to clarify the specific relationship between microplastics and metal ions, mechanism research should be carried out.

  • In this study, the physical quality and microbial changes of ginseng sprout according to the pretreatment process and packaging container were evaluated to improve the storage properties of ginseng sprout produced in smart farm. Quality change during storage (10 days) according to pretreatment method (ascorbic acid, citric acid, peroxyacetic acid) and packaging container (expanded polystyrene (EP), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene + polyethylene + cast polypropylene (PP+PE+CPP)) was evaluated in terms of texture, viable cell count, water content, and color. As a result of comparison according to the type of pretreatment, the citric acid treatment group showed the lowest texture change and the effect on inhibition of bacterial growth. On the other hand, citric acid, which was most effective among pretreatments, was treated in all samples and then stored in 4 types of containers. Specially, the ginseng sprout in PP packaging container was not observed significant softening or color changes after 10 days storage, and the lowest changes in viable cell number. Therefore, this study was shown that citric acid treatment and use of PP packaging container are effective in increasing the shelf life of ginseng sprout.
